Does anyone have a lathe that will pass 2.5" stock to consider making our own 7075 suspension links with? Since Matt has the right taps, I figure it's worth pricing material and comparing to the finished product, if someone we know can actually thread them...
-
would a brake lathe work?
-
I've never actually seen a brake lathe - but I wouldn't expect they have auto feed for tapping or drilling operation, they're pretty much just set up for honing and trueing aren't they?
-
quick google image search and I'm going to give that a definite "no"
-
i would like to upgrade my lathe to something like this. be nice to pass 3" for drive shafts. trouble is they get BIG and HEAVY.
-
40" of 7075 @2.5" is 20lbs
40" of 2x2x.250 steel is 18lbs
:o

wow. I redid your math and their math because I didn't believe it.
on the alu you remove a bit threading it and you're done, and on the steel you weld a bunch of additional to it, so probably nearly same finished weights.
2.25*40 Al = 16.22#
2*40 Al = 12.87#
steel math:
40*(2^2 - 1.5^2)*.2904 = 26#
bah!
-
source for .29 number?
i guess my random first google source without grade was poor
meh, i guess 1020 is .28
-
I used the first "mild steel" number I found...

have you found a place to buy sticks?
-
Haven't looked without knowing of a a lathe to work them with.
-
im sure Nolan or surplus could get it easy
-
emailed for specs on this gem

answer to the thread title: winner
http://syracuse.craigslist.org/tld/4573923933.html
look at that drill bit next to the hand broom lol
-
Omg.
Pratsburg sounds like a potential winner.
-
got pics. its an old school monster. he doesn't seem to be able to provide pass through dimension of chuck.
-
I may be rolling through that way on Sunday with my goose. Could set it right on the crossbeams IF it is a solid base unit.
-
if its 3" pass through, ill store it. make links. scrap it after or keep lol
says it has 3 chucks, and two of them are HUGE
motor and pulley system is above the chuck, it appears to be 6-7' tall, 10' over all length.
I guess it would need two cherry pickers, a welder and some box steel to winch it to a flat bed.
or pay a roll back to deliver it would be way easier
-
he doesn't have a forklift/ gantry/ similar to pick?
-
doubt it. i cant ask too many questions at once, he only picks one to answer.
-
hahaha
-
are you emailing with my boss?
-
It's prattsburgh, they just got spotty cell service there. The priest goes to church in overalls.
-
txt, 24hrs between response with this guy.
Engineer 1 requests list of questions / requirements to be answered / met
Engineer 2 provides answers or cost / lead time; whether it be 3 or 300
is that so hard!
-
Apparently, yes. Why? Wish I knew.
I blame outlooks defaulting to reply above original and discouraging trimming quoting and line by line reply. It fucked people's mindset on replies.
-
Or some people aren't all there...
-
let me know if you decide to pass on it. I would like to take a look.
-
broke down and called the guy lol
Took 5 minutes to get him to understand my question ahah
spindle pass though is only 1.5" chuck diameter is 3.25" id pass
it does have a thing that supports material from the bed, and he said you could easily put in a 6' piece of stock.
he got it off a trailer with a cherry picker and pipes :o
I think id like to get it
Hmm.
-
Mine. Sent a deposit
-
nice!
this one a day texter has paypal? haha
-
Mailed a check? Lol
-
responded in 2 sec when i said ill send a deposit with paypal. account matched name lol
-
Craigslist needs a rating system like ebay!
-
Yes it does.
-
thumbs up
thumbs down
middle finger
closed fist
would be a good rating system
-
put an RFQ in for 2" and 2.5" stock
-
did this thing come home yesterday?
-
not yet haha. working on it.
-
I went past Prat' at about 0800 this morning. didn't quite work out timing wise.
-
If you need one of my trailers let me know
-
not sure what the plan would be to get it on or off a deck over. its 77" high also
-
I wonder if Jeff's gantry would be helpful and/or transportable
-
What's tjis pig weigh?
Can u rent a fork lift or skidsteer and bring it to the location?
-
guy says he thinks its 600lbs :o
-
That seems too light?
-
ya just by a factor of 3-5 or so
-
add a 0 to that and I'd bet it's a closer number.
-
Didn't he swear he sued a cherry picker?
-
We got her. Door to lot about 6it hours. That was a pain.
Super high cg on this thing. Probably 600lbssome in tooling. Felt heavier than a 4.0/ax5/231 on the drive side.
Gona need some maintance but looks like a good old girl.
Used every beam, plank, pipe, tool, strap and 2 of the 3base pickers we brought.
-
I don't think I'll hurt for this tmw, but fuck that was a lot of work.
Couldn't have done it without Jeff. We almost called for you to bring beer around 11:00.
I "can't wait" to help get the beast off my trailer.
-
I stopped at H Hots on the way home. Getting out of the truck realized I'd forgotten my wallet. Good job!
-
glad it worked out
-
Thanks for the supplies Jeff.
started looking through the bits.
tooling included well worth the cost. several boring bars and tool holders. live/dead centers, still need to look through the other bits. stuff covers my metal table.
gona try to get it too its home tonight

ALUMINUM ROUND BAR 7075 T7351
3 LG(S) (133#) 2" RD x 10/12' R/L 5.48/LB 1 WK
REGRET ON 2.5"RD
what does 10/12' R/L mean?
-
regardless, a 20' stick of 2" would be 76lbs or 442$ :-[
-
New lathe in its home. Took 30 min max with shovel and chassis table.
Missing the tail stock chuck, boo.
Probably be looking for a 3 phase converter rather than hassel of swapping other not really matching 240 motor
-
there is a ton of 2 3/8" 7075 on ebay
runs about $2.50 and inch shipped.

2.0" uppers front/27"x2 rear/27.5"x2

I would build my own if that was in MY shop. ;)
-
this thing hawgs steel like a boss
found an adapter thing in one of the boxes that makes Morse #3 to Morse#2 so my drill chuck from the other lathe works! win.
made up some sway bar carriers tonight. Tons of tooling this thing came with.
hit it with a grease gun too. needs a 1" locking coller made thats missing on the power facing feed gear drive.
everything else works great.
-
Fawesome!
Tapatalking in traffic
-
ordered a 3/4 chuck anyway, LH and RH 1.25" taps on the way, bit in hand. some center bits on the way also.
-
I'll have to come see this beast.
I've never used or seen one used in person. Would love to experience.
-
<<<<<<<<<<<<<< jealous
-
Someone will loose an arm with this big safety hazard. :)
-
professional use only!
-
Lol.
should I bring hard hats and safety glasses?
-
thanks for the tap loan matt!
-
only half my material showed up and the rest ups seems to have sat on for 8 days in MI. awesome.
turned out the two uppers i have. ready to tap threads.
about the labor intensive pain in the ass 3 hours to do two of them.
-
(http://i.behappy.me/82379/preview.png)
-
ordered some more LH taps today. should have full sets of 1 1/4, 7/8, 5/8's
-
got all the tooling in today.
finished up all links, sway bar links, and track bars for my car.
This thing will power thread up to 7/8" but no go on 1 1/4" lol
tired arms but all is well. time to assemble.
-
doing work!
-
nice!
-
Seeing it in person gives one a whole new understanding of this beast.
Vintage awesome ness
-
nice work. you putting any flat spots on them for wrenching
-
i put flats on the sway bar links the other ones i didnt. it was a pain. the car rides straight as an arrow now 50mph on road, have no idea why.
