My plan is do to the following this week & weekend, the big stuff at Smike's shop:
- fuel tank straps
- rear brakes
- camshaft swap
- front main seal
- tappet cover seal
- replace a broken accelerator return spring that's been hanging out since I bought the truck
- swap cracked fuel return hard line
Have all the seals as of last night
Have had the brake parts and tank straps for a while
Camshaft should be here Friday, just ordered it from Peak Diesel
Tempted to swap injectors too but I think I'll wait on that.
Looking forward to lower EGTs and less leaky pile status.
There may be a little side trip that postpones this until after my Denver Jam, we'll see how timing works out.... I'd rather get this done first but we'll see.
-
the dumpbus drove out tonight with a new cam!
-
nice
-
Put 35 miles on it. Took a little timing out too. I think I was at 16-16.5 before, now I'm at about 14.5 if I remember right - and if 3* is the proper correction for the pop pressure difference. Feels way slower off the line, not sure if I like that. Starts a million times easier though. 15-15.5 is probably the sweet spot.
Got on it good coming back home once and I can still get it hot but I think it's more reasonable now. I didn't bury the pyro, which I think I could before if I tried. Need to get a load behind it and pull US15 N to really know if it helped me as much as I hope.
Found and fixed a few other issues while I was in it. Think I have a couple weeping injector lines to deal with, and I definitely have a big bubble in the heater core. Brr. Fixed the shutdown solenoid bracket again, hopefully for the last time. All my timing cover bolts had been loose, that was probably most of the oil leak. All locktited this time around. Though I'd done that before but ???
Gotta clean up my mess of tools in the shop tomorrow. May go after some of the remaining project bits too. Like the overflow bottle that I'm degunking, and brakes and straps (now that I put 27 gallons in the tank tonight. Oops)
-
You were able to bury the Pyro within seconds towing my heap
-
Waiting for my $5!!
-
You bet, welcher.
-
Unstoppable!
-
Leaking has been severely limited!! Successful on the oil and fuel front in that regard it seems.
Set frontend toe, shored up headlight mounting, replaced fuel tank straps (blissfully easy and smooth job!) and did the rear brake shoes tonight along with cleaning up my weekend's mess. Didn't need drums or springs. Shoes were at about 50% but a couple were sketchy with cracking an biased wear. Worth replacing. Found out I have shoe life view plugs in the backing plates too. Sweetness.
Dual tires at different clocking after the brake job smoothed out my long standing ~72mph vibe. It runs great at 80+ :-(
Still wanna do the front brake/hub/knuck swap. Need to fix/ replace horn again. Swap exhaust brake to pressure actuated. Maybe do something with a wastegate... That and rust issues are about it.
-
Louder stereo speakers? Headsets that allow the driver and passenger to communicate at highway speeds?
-
Noisemaker upgrades would be nice. I keep scoping crush cars for upgrades, I'll find some eventually. Found a few subs in Albany that others took, I thought I was gonna have some nice Xplode 6x9s from the rear deck of a Buick in NYC but they were a mismatched set and one looked whipped.
-
I dropped a couple hundo on the Eagle sound system yet this languishes....
It's been a sweet beast since all this work went into it though! Still want to do the Ford knuckles and fix a couple air leaks but she's a reliable transporter!
-
borrowed Smike's sweet clamp on DC ammeter to look for phantom draws tonight, found nothing. being on top of the battery does confuse it a bit, seemed to work mostly okay if I could put it where I wanted it, zero it, then put the wires in as long as orientation was the same and position was close. it would wander 0.3a or so depending on orientation when on top of the battery.
anyway, I seem to have well under half an amp. I think around 0.1-0.2 which I think is a bit lower than I found with my ammeter in-line last time I played this game. Batteries have got to be shot.
-
AAA Acceptable rating for electrical draw is .7 amps and under for not computer controlled vehicles. Recomended under.5
-
while not "computer controlled" it is an OBD-II vehicle with a PCM and BCM...
It's sitting at work right now, if I'm smart I'll go straight from here to Advance and get the batteries tested after I get off. I expect they'll fail. Even if it is due to phantom draw they've been down to dead so often I've probably killed them.
-
Short term solution. The item pictured tests at 42CCA. other one tests at 877. Rated 875.
I look forward to a night drive to see if my other strange symptom disappeared (intermittent voltage drops)

I like this post.

-
i cant see either of those images, but for what ever gods sake,
please Arie drop 2 new batteries for the dump bus!
-
Yeah.
That was some sweet Sunday morning embarrassment and time wasting. Booo
-
my cousin asked what was wrong with your truck and if we should stay to help you as we pulled away. i gave her words about it and she laughed at you.
-
Lol. She was a good addition to our merry band of troublemakers.
-
she is pretty random, but fun, or funny
ha
-
Her and I had a good time hanging out this weekend.
-
Saw 250 degrees on the ol' tranny temp gauge today. Think some synthetic goodness may be in order for summertime loads.
It was over 90 ambient, I was doing 70+ in double over for hours, with hills, and probably weigh 24-25k. Pretty much worst case. IIRC Eaton says 230 or cooler is where to be. Currently filled with 75w90 dino juice. I should double check specs and see if I could go to a 50w MTF instead. I'd think a thinner oil would reduce temps too? I may be backwards on that though
-
how are the new injection lines doing?
-
So far so good. I think the others were lasting 5-7k before failure? So I should know by end of summer at latest.
Some asshole really needs to fix the AC (again) in this rustbucket pile! Sizzling.
-
this thing is a sweet machine, i got at least 3 or 4 gears down!
-
Oh man, I see another 13 speed swap coming shortly.
-
So there are 9 or 10 gears left for me to use later, good! Hahaha
-
http://syracuse.craigslist.org/cto/3069997900.html
-
you should be all over that like white on a dumpbus
-
that bed is a rotted out POS, look at the rust lines around the fenders and how the tailgate is smashed
looks like a 200$ box
-
I'm with smike. If I'm spending real money, it'll be on a real rust free southern box, or a utility bed to mod for my use
-
(that white gas truck with the plow, bad trans, and utility bed is still up for $2000 - that's more tempting than this at $800)
-
Mmmm fluid changes
I have 2-2.5 gallons of Castrol Syngear CD-50 left. Fully synthetic 50w manual trans fluid. It's what's currently in my dispenser, yours for $35/gal. Will probably sit for years in the pail otherwise, let me know before I put the cheap stuff back in the dispenser.

No noise difference that I notice driving empty. Seems to run a bit cooler but haven't towed or driven for hours on end yet. Hopefully the damn cars will come in and I'll know this weekend.
AC parts coming in too. Retail price for all of everything (all lines, condenser and evap included) was just over 600. Deeply annoying labor but with the usual discount I'm hoping it's worth it. I really miss AC!!
Should get batteries soon as well. I need to call Erik's guy and see if he still does the stupidly cheap new takeout batteries.
Lastly, The hard start that began for smike is due to my bandaid for the shutdown solenoid, I'm sure. When parked with the fuel on the IP not killed, the pump leaks down and then takes lots of cranking to start once it sits for 24+ hours. Combine with having only one battery, and annoyance is the result.
So I'll have to fix that bracket for the third or fourth time, and make sure it is adjusted to perfection so it doesn't break bolts again.
-
Evap an heater cores replaced. Dash back together. Not at all done under the hood but the hard part is done. Wasn't really too bad.
Son of a bitch. Just remembered I didn't reconnect the blend door control. Guess I'll have to tilt the dash again. Damnit!
-
this is currently waiting on delivery of one more line (faith placed in auto zone home delivery, so help me! they said "ships within 2 days" - Advance couldn't get it, Stoney's couldn't get it, Arie didn't have it in-system anywhere, Napa had it in Texas and CarQuest had it in Kentuky. Dodge had a handful spread all over onsie twosie at twice the price, Rock Auto wanted $80 for next day shipping), and install of that line, compressor and condensor.
Then it just needs juice, hoping to get it done Thursday I guess we'll see.
-
The Zone comes through?? Nah, gonna be the wrong part. Has to be.
Who's working tomorrow Paul? Might stop by for liquids.
-
Eh see!!!
She blows cold. Would be aaaaawful nice if she holds. Can't wait to haul Friday.
-
Air is nice!!!!
-
Shaweet
-
Still working?
-
Haha
-
probably empty and seized by now. I'll find out tomorrow.
-
Could not have had better timing in getting the AC fixed. Traffic jams, pouring rain, 100% humidity and 75-80.
Last weekend in the 90s would have been more tolerable!
This is awesome. I'm spoiled again.
-
this is neat
http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/3154203789.html
-
That is a useless pos
-
Never gonna sell, been up for months. Nick is 100% - you have to drop the trailer to load car#4 on that style trailer, it's heavy enough to need at least an MDT, and still only holds 4.
-
I think smike's POSdar has gotten all jumbled since he drove the dump bus.
-
hahahaha i think your right
-
mine is all jumbled since the POS got AC!!
-
Might be time to invest in a spare?
http://rochester.craigslist.org/pts/3146393299.html
-
read the title and the price and thought "that's high!" then realized it wasn't just the pump :)
still too steep for spare status.
-
bet that's junkin joe selling it, that's a bus application motor and the neighborhood is right.
-
Still blowin icy!
Still needs batteries.

hit me up...

This unit is hazing at idle like would do Nick proud. I've suspected a weak injector for a while; I think it probably finished itself off.
Probably replace them with RV275s instead of bothering to have these checked and then still waiting around when they're too worn to shim to spec.
New neighbor came over to BS while I was loading up and noticed a neat trick. Trailer brake lights have a really faint flicker. No clue of the source but I'm absolutely certain it's related to my ignition off draw. Fun stuff.
-
Little gurgle belly never hurt no one
-
Puff puff pass!
-
Idled with no haze at all after jump starting by the big black cox at Rausch. Went to Bret's omw home, #3 fuel line cracked on the way there. Ben up a replacement and hung out for a couple hours. Got tired around 10:30pm and slept at the parking area on I86. Got home this morning and it is hazing like a whore again. New injectors were waiting for me in the mailbox. Couple things to do this week...
-
I hope i never get jumped by the big black cox :o
-
i got batteries for you
-
gracias Arie. I have an S10 key to give you and Nissan title to get too. And maybe stuff for Jake's latest? Haven't talked to him yet.
Let me know when's good.

I hope i never get jumped by the big black cox :o
LOL!

Eek. Sweet autocorrect there!

-
What do you need to do to get normal lines on this?
-
12v head.
-
I'm starting to think you need to get that then.
-
Thanks, I hadn't thought if that :-p
-
That sounds like a pain in the dick.
-
http://rochester.craigslist.org/pts/3219400576.html
-
I should price an IP. Could be a good flip if that's all it needs.
Oooor ignore it ;D
Yes swapping a head is a pain in the dick without a damn doubt. Probably about as much of a pain as swapping like 23 injection lines so far.
-
brobably not nearly what it was to swap the cam
-
I think its time to swap in a CAT
-
brobably not nearly what it was to swap the cam
about same total work as cam, I'd say. head bolts are a pain, all hot side stuff instead of rad/intercooler/condensor and cold side/ injectior stuff.
-
full set of .078" lines will be on its way in a couple days. $0.
Glad I was able to get that - and no caveats. I've got to say, this is a shitty issue but I really feel like they're treating me fucking awesome. They've lost their ass on the sale several times over and keep treating me well.
He said I'm the only one splitting these new lines like this; thinks there's something restricting flow. Apparently the crossover tubes that feed the injectors have an "edge filter" on them that could potentially be plugged. I'll look for that when I do the injectors. Now that I know lines are on the way I won't be shy about tearing the truck apart and doing what I plan to do there
- swap injectors
- check/ set timing
- check/ set valve lash
Thankfully, essentially zero extra effort on this line swap since they've got to come off to do injectors anyway.

Fuel lines pulled after a tiny bit of cleanup, and mowing. Then it was dark and the skeeters were carrying me away.
-
The darkness is arriving earlier :/
-
Yeah. Noticeably. Sad... Maybe we can get an early freeze and then I won't care as much.
-
Lines just got here. That was quick.
-
80% done. Just test fired it. Injectors installed, timing checked (at 13.7* or so - a bit mild but I think that's where I set it; not far enough from where I want it to bother), valve lash set.
Just need to clamp lines and put the intake back on.

I want a minion to put my tools away and package & ship exchanges/ cores.
Done, otherwise.
-
Just saw "Despicable Me" again. Love the minions. They make the movie.
"bopple?" hahaha
-
Old injectors may have sucked a lot.
-
Just saw "Despicable Me" again. Love the minions. They make the movie.
"bopple?" hahaha
Paychex had a movie night showing that last week. I thought about going
-
21mpg to Tom's and back.
The new fuel sending unit's gauge is miles different than the old one. Tank will take just over 5 gallons at the 3/4 mark, before it was almost exactly 10 gallons there. Be a little more linear now.
-
Had one of the heim joints in my clutch linkage come loose today. Could have lost the nut and been up a creek but caught it loose and was able to tighten it. Bitch to get to but all fixed. Something to put a wrench on as PM I guess.
First real issue with anything tranny related since the air loss on inauguration. Not bad! (starter failure/ ring gear strip isn't the trans' fault)
Running _amazing_ with the new sticks and lines. Cooler, stronger. If I backed off the fuel plate just a skosh I could even just let the cruise eat on the hills. With the dak and Matt's jeep only the biggest hills on 390 made pyro too warm.
Sealing up the exhaust mani leak with the broken bolt may even do enough.
-
4 M3's id bet on this guy!
cool configuration
http://rochester.craigslist.org/cto/3276303614.html
-
Definitely interesting. I wonder if those are narrow track axles or if that's a 102" deck that's split high/low on the inside/outside over the tires. pics don't do it justice. Only 6' longer than mine and still wasted tongue length. I'm 47' 2" overall from the coupler to the tail. Might get a third Jeep on but wouldn't get a fourth M2.
you see the Centurion in the background? Don't see many of those!
-
I'm not 47', I'm 43'. Dunce. Coupler to deck is 7'2".
Anyway, the couple of you that've ridden in this thing since I put my new cheap steers on know how square they are. I'd put probably 3-5k on them and they were getting worse if anything. Almost as bad as the 80% Continental I retired. Thursday night I rotated them side to side do they're sinning the other way. I'd say 50-70% improvement. I'm surprised.
Should decide on new tire plans. Should probably at least put fresh drives on for winter, I think they're getting a little thin especially for 4x2 duty
-
The perfect replacement.
http://frederick.craigslist.org/cto/3339105490.html
-
Log racks & chrome stacks!!!
-
Not sure how much you're looking to spend, but I may have a pair of used Goodyear steers if you're trying to save money. 40 to 50 percent
-
I'm debating between 4 vs 6 tread wrights in 225 or 6 in 245.
-
my sailUNs have decided to not wear nice anymore. they have about another 10k left on them.
I am thinking the way the truck is towed with an SRW just cant take the power and gooseneck weight.
id go to with 245's for the next set so at least i can tow in 5th gear when in convoy with fords and chevys :o
-
I'm thinking 245s might keep me in 12d instead of 12o when I'm not keeping up with you. Cooler trans and quieter ride might not be bad. Dunno if it's quite enough of a difference for that though.
-
I will probably go 245 on my hawg when theses tires are done.
-
Got a new pair of headlights on the way. $123 free shipping. If they're really the same I had I'll get you the link smike. Shipping info says delivery a week from Monday. All the vendors are in CA.
Blend door linkage fell off again tonight. 3rd time. Need to figure some better securement; gotta tip the dash this weekend.
Other nitpicks:
- fog lights non-op.
- exhaust brake non-op.
- swap munged 7 blade sockets at both locations.
- inspect all driveline mounts just because I haven't yet,
- look for something rubbing. Has occasional NVH that wasn't there pre-crash. Feels like motor to frame harshness. Can hear it too.
Otherwise all seems well.
Fucking heavy BTW.
-
I saw you!
-
Yeah those suckers are real heavy!
-
I saw you!
I didn't see you. But I saw your note at some point later
-
I was in the jeep, I honked at the t-way
-
I thought what passed me at the tway was an Envoy or TrailBlazer. I honked too and then was surprised that it wasn't what I expected. Funny
-
Did you shimmy up a light pole to get that picture? :)
-
Of course. Don't you always do that?
Last rest stop in NY on I81s has a deck thing, took it from the upper level.
-
Whitney Point? I always stop there. Pretty clean.
-
I've never stopped there before. The first one in PA is really nice too, and I usually stop there. All the steps up from the truck side is really weird though
-
bed is falling apart. if I took the tailgate off the passenger side would vacate, or at least eat tire, in a couple hundred rough road miles.
thinking about making vs buying vs stock replacement. I don't love the idea of kissing bed sides and starting the structural damage all over again.
found this localish. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/towing-hauling-rv-sale/541915-herrin-hauler-bed-sale-2800-a.html
it'd need some mods and some paint.
I like the price on this a LOT better and it would need no mods and no paint - but it's not perfect either. I guess nothing is :)
http://www.competitiondiesel.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143701&highlight=bed
earlier today TSC has 25% off all truck boxes but that seems to have quit already. I laid out some stuff but even at 25% off it'd be pretty expensive for what I want - plus the steel to build the flatbed to mount them to. With the discount it still would have been a grand in boxes, and I'd have been tipping some underbody boxees on their sides, so may need gutter modification. Not really ideal.
Hoping I can just score a good bed cheap. I think that Herrin is too expensive for not exactly what I want, in the wrong color, maybe needing mounting changes, and needing fuel door modification. OTOH it's local and easy.
-
The one in VA is great, get that. ;D
-
I wish he'd get back to me!
The local guy didn't tell me how flexible he is on price but asked what my offer is. If I get it for 2 and then hear the VA bed is still there I'm gonna be pissed. Maybe I'll dig for VA contact info tmw.
-
Meh, don't love either one. Prefer standard bed. What about your fuel tank?
-
Plop 'er right on top. Or something.
I don't love crushing bed sides with off-camber goose necks. That's what moved the current state of affairs from some relatively hidden rot and separation to outright structural failure. I really crushed it badly once, and have touched it at least twice more with relatively light damage. a new trailer or rebuilding the neck taller are the only other fixes.
This is what I really want, but they're near 6 grand new. http://cmtruckbeds.com/pages/tm_model.html
-
I like the price on this a LOT better and it would need no mods and no paint - but it's not perfect either. I guess nothing is :)

Still available. I happen to know the seller pretty well from another forum too. Just gotta get down there now!
-
send him a deposit, thats a steal.
Whats your botom dollar for the WJ as is make it go away- i have a buyer interested....
-
for my WJ shell? is this somebody cool who I should give it away to or just a schmoe? I usually don't give bottom dollar prices to schmoes.
the local guy with the tan bed also said he'd to 2000 - which is also a steal (but he's been sitting on it for a month already; not sure I could just flip it)
-
He is the Dyno delphi guy I tried to sell a frozen cracked sludged 4.0 to :)
has a 4dr lifted xj, cool guy.
-
oh man I lost my ass on that. oh well.
I dunno, what's it worth to him?
-
like 7-800
-
I guess I'd do that. No short term plans with it, and they're still easy to find for not much more with blown motors or trannies if still decide I want a TDI WJ like I've had in the back of my mind.
-
its got a clean floated title right?
-
I'll try and remember to double check it's where and as it should be.
-
Toolbox rust. Pretty bad, they need new floors. And are pretty damn small. Wonder if I could add rear boxes?
-
Nothing a little sheet metal won't fix
-
The size is more disappointing. That's less room than the toolbox I've got now even if it's more accessible.
-
Guy's in Winchester VA. Too bad there're no more Big Dogs trips.
-
have him drop off at warehouse... get it next time
-
It's still mounted on his truck and he doesn't have any way to remove it by himself, so it's more involved than it could be.
Definitely worth a thought though.
-
i'm planning on going to visit Steve sometime soon
if i had a truck, i'd offer to pick it up for you
-
Chadley needs some things moved around, he's checking some stuff for me this week. Hoping I can do it this coming weekend. I've got plans the 14th and 15th, then one more weekend before things get crazy for me for 8 weeks.
-
Here are some ideas

Those trucks remind me I'll soon have a headache rack. I don't think I want high forward facing lights behind the cab though
-
http://rochester.craigslist.org/pts/3445748350.html
doesnt look like a traction tire though
-
Nope..straight rib
-
Ran the valves on this last night. One was a little loose, no issues found. They were not the source of the once per revolution tick that's developed.
Runs like a top. Didn't oil the front of the trailer in 40-50 miles to Lake Rd & back to pick up Was White. So that was probably the vacuum line that came off and let it pressurize the crank case. Not near as much load as running I90 with an NPR on the goose though.
-
Forgot to mention, for the second or third time, I REALLY missed 4x4. If the Big Bore wasn't there, the trailer might still be. Once the car was loaded, I pretty much couldn't move it.
With the wet slushy situation, I'm not sure 4x4 even would have gotten me out of the yard but I bet I at least could have turned around without more dragging.
Tire chains go back on my list.
-
i needed 4x4 3 times this weekend.
once to hook the trailer, once to park the trailer, and once to park/unhook.
-
this sucker sounds like I'm about to window the block when it's cold.
gotta be rod knock?
-
ya that was no good in my shop. i would say the end is near for something
shitty. Maybe have chadly listen to it?
-
That's prolly not good
-
I'm thinking the same.
It's going on a trip this weekend and probably next. Filangies crossed. Oil pressure is still fine.
I'd be happier if I had an engine on a stand to drop in it. I think if it makes it the next two weekends I'll be looking at a bottom end rebuild :(
Or a parts truck. These 12v trucks going for 3-4k are getting intriguing.
Fucking thing.
-
find a dually with disk brakes so i can coon the rear axle
-
no cheap 12v is gonna have rear discs
-
The revving to 3k rpm has started to show its ugly head! ;D
-
24valves have stock 4K springs son dont they
-
I don't think this 24v has ever been that high.
I had a vacuum line come off and blow lots of oil out with the vacuum pump, it lost pressure for half a second at idle twice in newburgh when I got there, before I put about 6-7 quarts in it - that's the only funny thing that's happened to it. had to be it?
boo hiss in any case.
-
24v don't have governor springs, they have a computer.
-
Keep telling yourself that haha
-
What am I supposed to keep telling myself? that the one funny thing that happened a couple hundred miles before the problem was noticed is most likely what caused it? or that I don't rev it past 3k?
-
i thought you had the 24 head on, forgot.
hmmm. definate could be root of problem. wonder if its fine like chevy rod motors forever in buggies.
-
oh, you're talking valve springs. yeah, the stock 24v springs are better than the stock 12v springs.
my governor is springs too - and that's what is a 4k spring in my pump.
I'm thinking it might be a time bomb with a long timer, but who knows? this motor has had more blowby than I like from day 1 but I couldn't beat the price.
-
Price < install labor
meh
-
tell me about it.

this guy doesn't look too bad either.

-
How many miles on that motor in question?
-
supposedly had 130k on it when I put it in, that's unverified and unknown and uncertain. The bus it came from was wrecked and the ECM was damaged so I couldn't have had Cummins pull info for me if I wanted to.
I've put 59,000 on it since.
-
So you're looking at getting a parts truck to swap a motor in from?
Is that a more economical option than getting it rebuilt/buying a reman?
-
Whole trucks at parts truck prices are cheaper than a reman motor. Always. And then there are other parts to sell.
As for better? Debatable.
Whole damn thing is debatable by now. Long since actually.
-
Guess I should have said bang for buck, not economical. Although it's not like it matters, if it were me I'd just go the cheapest route haha
-
stop posting those trucks you fuckers im going to have to buy one
Harrison, ill sell my truck with bald tires on it to to you and knock the price down haha
-
You should buy one.
-
i like that white one other than the rot and cracks and bling usless wheels, and ofcourse its white
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-dodge-ram-3500-4x4-6-speed-5-9-cummins-diesel-4door-/221188381018?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item337fdad95a#v4-43
the maroon one id like to call and check that its actually a 6 speed- looks like an ad F up, been caught by that before.
-
o sorry pics work now- ya its a 6 speed.
looks in good shape other than gate slammed. seems spendy
-
Spendy? $13k seems like a good price.
-
its a dealer, so that means add 3K in tax and bs fees
-
Harrison, ill sell my truck with bald tires on it to to you and knock the price down haha
Nick has me sold on running veg, and I wanna own a 12v before I'm tired of tinkering all the time like the rest of you. But for shits, how much?
-
i like that white one other than the rot and cracks and bling usless wheels
sellable useless bling.
-
Thing sounds right as rain after 30 miles on the highway, good and warmed up.
-
And like a clapped out pile after it fires up again after sitting for 5 minutes.
Still blowing oil out of itself like a motherfucker. What a pile.
-
Saw this at gander mtn. Your style.

Love the ghetto dual axle setup.
-
Ouch
-
Cross your fingers for me please
Hope this gets me from the MA line to home.
-
Yeah.... Nope.
-
Is it burning it? Major leak?
-
Looked back. Blowing oil, bad rings?
-
Fingers and toes crossed..
-
Bad rings, holed piston, something. Taking it really easy. Gonna get te whole mess as far as I can. Just stopped to check oil after 40 or so miles from trailer pick up.
on chads suggestion I removed my oil caps and tried to clamp the tappet cover breather hose shut. I'm hoping for a quart or two low with the changes I made....
I've got 2 gallons with now, I think. 200 miles to go.
-
Oh - and Springfield MA can eat a bowl of dicks if I didn't mention that. No oil one place, pump wouldn't work another, no bathrooms at a third, got lost... Ended up back at the place whose pump wouldn't work to get oil. Uugh! Put me back well over an hour for what should have been a 15 minute stop.
-
1/4 or 2/3qt low after 40-45. I'm gonna head for the Petro at x41 fr next stop. That's 70 from here. Added none.
Great news IMO.
-
All downhill after Syracuse. Started running on 5 when I pulled in to Warner service area. Took 2 gallons, didn't want to crank. Slow/hard.
Made it home running on 5. Stalled in my driveway and would barely turn over. I'm betting an exhaust valve isn't opening. I'm sure that didn't do any extra harm over the last 70 miles or so!
Pushed a little oil too. 2 gallons used since Warner, no pressure while I was parking if it was below 1000.
Hosed!

Edit: hosed, but home.
-
wow...
all over that nice new front clip :(
-
THAT SUCKS :(

the dump bus is unstoppable until it gets home!

Rustproofing the old fender. Bottom of the new hood won't look so new anymore I'm sure

ouch man.. glad you made it home..

nothing that a hot water pressure washer won't clean up ;D

there are all three non-common rail generations of 5.9s represented in those links...
Too bad Ryan's truck sold, something like that really has the most appeal to me right now.
I could really use a hot water pressure wash right now, I'm sure. I don't want to deal with that level of yuck but I'd really like to pull the valve cover again and see what's not moving that should, or is moving and shouldn't. Maybe at least make it startable again.... I don't think there's any chance of that right now, it didn't want to turn over even when still hot.
-

coming from the man who did and does the impossible..
read your sig and make it work

Chad has a hot water pressure washer

an extra reason to talk to Chadley.
his suggestion is what got me home with this pile, no doubt.
-
You posted 2 link to ebay auctions for trucks just like Matts last week.
-
For similar money.
-
theres an 05 i like in fulton for 23K
wrong color, but close :)
6 speed dually with 175k :/
-
lots of work, but knowlege and cability is present to just swap another block.
Fix your injection pump mounts, or better yet get another pump on the doner motor. seems like your fuel line issues are sorted out. decided if you like the new cam or not- sell that or swap it back
your too far into it and it works- no option other than to fix it, or part it out to fund a common rail with 7 less speeds you will never like as much!
-
X2.. emotionally attached already..
I love the dumpbus
-
Put a stock 12v in it and leave it alone?
-
Put a stock 12v in it and leave it alone?
HA!
-
CR5.9/6sp has serious appeal. I do like the truck but it's noisy and 4x2 and needs a bed and rockers and now a motor (again) too.
reman motors are as much as a whole truck goes for.
I'll have time to wrench again after this weekend in Providence, and maybe feel like doing so a week or two after that. I think the truck may end up sitting for a bit while the TDI gets finished and I decide what to really do. I have to have a pushrod or lifter or something fucked right now, hopefully I can bandaid it a bit so it'll at least move itself in the mean time.
Pick up a whole donor truck ('01 auto 4x4 with a bad VP44 on CL for too much $, I'm sure there are others)? pull this motor and rebuild? pay a mint for a "new" motor? replace the truck and part it out? I dunno. I have a couple trailers I could sell and a couple bucks chilling, plus several sellable bits and pieces if I part DB.
I'd love a MDT but I don't want anything that's over about 6'6" tall. Monster Jam parking would get complicated and combining trips is a very important option to me. Speaking of which, I think that other thing we talked about is off the table for more pressing reasons than trailer parking, Arie :(
-
Matt or I can help out if you need stuff moved with a goose ball
-
it was a possible pick in Providence this coming weekend when I'm there. You're both towing already...
I have a Jeep in an enclosed to drop off too. It's probably fine though. Or you could test out how the RR handles that trailer, Arie? It's got a couple hundred pounds of tools up front right now too, I didn't scale it...
-
i ment in your drive way or locally haha
-
haha
-
The van in RI was just because you were going there.. don’t really need it here anyway..
as far as the Jeep goes, I’m in no rush for it TODAY...
leaving for Florida Thursday... when I get home Monday I will have a very flexible week..
Smike.. if you up for playing around with it this weekend maybe you can grab it?
from what I’m told it just needs a fuel line and some tinkering to get running/driving on its own.
-
im leaving for rausch Friday, no good this weekend.
-
yeah forgot about that..
that’s why I couldn’t go.. trying to get away with the wife before winter is over...
Mike, if it’s ok in the trailer can it stay? I just don’t have any way of moving that fucker..
heard your parents F150 might be for sale ;)
-
CJ6 can chill in the trailer - just need to get Was White hidden away before the nosy neighbor gets me a repeat nastygram on it. I bet the black-oil-fendered rusted pile sitting where it landed will distract from that for a lil while
-
drop off at 398?
-
is that the new homestead? I don't remember the address, just where it is.
will be next week if that's okay. I can leave a trailer key for you if you want to take a look at it.
-
ohh no.. I meant drop off the eagle @ 398 west main... you know where your other TDI candidate is :)
Might want to see the Jeep tomorrow, just so I can grab paperwork....
-
i have to dumb off the winter weight sometime in the Wonder2.0 this week- let me know when your are looking at piles on a free night Mike
-
early tomorrow evening is probably best to catch me. I could go grab it too since you did me the favor and all. I'm leaving for Providence wednesday night. Just spending my two evenings home doing laundry and making up for lost Kim time.
if you don't catch me, I'll stash the key.
-
what does lost kim time mean lol

She actually doesn't hate it :-/
Shocking. Absolutely.
Aaron's truck, asked home to call me later today. I don't want a 6.7, but with emissions deletes, maybe...
http://charlotte.craigslist.org/ctd/3613339328.html
-
shes a keeper then!!!
maybe he wasnt a partial trade for the Dump?
-
Aaron's truck is a solid beam axle 4x2. I'd probably keep my front axle, 19.5 wheels, probably the transmission swap, and part out the motor and the good bits of the body and interior if I went that route.
I need to run some numbers on the pennies I feel I'd likely get for that sell-off.
-
looks like a nice truck and you are use to 2wd
i have aarons cell if you want it
-
shes a keeper then!!!
I overlooked confirming this point.
maybe he wasnt a partial trade for the Dump?
Wouldn't work out logistically speaking.
-
I talked to Aaron for an hour just now. This truck is pretty unbeatable with the exception of the risks of the deleted emissions, legally speaking. It has obvious block off plates and missing parts. EGR was leaking coolant and that's when it was deleted. It also got a fresh head gasket, injectors, turbo, couple other things at that time. New fan, clutch, radiator (clutch failed, ate rad). Trans is tight, good synchros. Fresh brakes, ball joints, steering linkages, track bar bushings. Recent starter, 1yr on batteries, has block heater. Fresh fuel filter.
Smarty Jr programmer JR67. Journey HD brake controller. Factory exhaust brake.
South bend dual disk with south bend hydraulics upgrade
Has air bags removed from rear suspension, one was blown. ~$80-100 ea to replace.
NC truck, zero rust. Two scratches. Good latches and hinges and locks and handles an windows.
No significant blowby with oil cap off.
He bought it with a blown rear end. Put 3.43s in it since the original 3.73s were months-long back ordered. Broken in, rechecked, synthetic filled.
C&C truck, OE 54 gallon tank.
19-25 mpg
Abs light on and cruise is non-op. likely speed sensor issue.
Drum in disk parking brake is weak.
No gauges
Needs drive tires
I'm seriously thinking about giving him a deposit.
-
thats a GREAT truck...
gives you options as well...
-
Looks like a solid truck.
-
54 gallon OE tank sounds awesome
-
if it was 4x4 id own it already
-
yeah. it's a solid axle. only fab needed would be tcase mounting and shafts.
time to start selling shit.
-
Leave it alone. ;D
-
especially since you dont wheel any more and have been 2wd for 2 years already, i wouldnt bother haha
-
I've only been okay because it hasn't snowed! I was stuck at Nick's last week and I was spinning backing into my driveway Monday morning this week... my drives are getting pretty thin though.
I'll keep my current front axle just to keep my options open. it'd be as easy to make that truck 4x4 as it would my current one as it sits.
-
Winch + Bumper is cheaper that 4x4..
plus you got the eagle for winter driving...
-
couldnt you get like 3-4K for your truck as it sits on one of the hot shot forums from some nut wanting the trans swap or something?
-
finding another motor on CL sounds the easiest and most economical
-
curious,,,
why no 6.7?
-
finding another motor on CL sounds the easiest and most economical
what, to make dumpbus a runner again?
she's getting parted. I'd rather take parts off and not put them back on at this point.
couldnt you get like 3-4K for your truck as it sits on one of the hot shot forums from some nut wanting the trans swap or something?
I'd expect so - but should be much more in parts.
I don't know if the trans swap is sellable for what I have in it. I'll sit on that for future use if I don't get what I want for it.
There's big money in the complete P7100 IP swap. I'll check on prices to have the pump gone through and maybe have that done. It's got the entire 318k on it.
Lots of other sellable parts too, small and large.
Next immediate steps for me will be clean up under the hood, get the TDI finished and out of the garage, get the Haulmark empty and listed for sale, then start tear down and selling of truck things.
-
I can help with the Haulmark empty thing next week....
dont forget you got a GC worth its fair share of $$$
-
you just listed 3 years in mike mike progress time to part that out. your prolonging the pain.
??? i dont know what i would do though haha
-
That GC is worth no more than scrap from what i see listed on CL currently- you can buy blown motor ones complete for 800$
-
is everything present in that GC?
was it a 6cyl or a 8cyl?
miles and general condition?
M4/RE flip???
-
NO
-
already have 25hrs into that attempt- we do not have the technology on this one.
unless you bring a rolled running same year, no way in hell this thing will live with OE power train
-
yup pretty much. and I think >25hr.
it has some security system glitch in it, couldn't get it to start.
it's a 4.0 - would need a '99 GC as a donor.
It'll 5.3 bowtie power, TDI power, or scrapped.
The bottom fell out of WJs, many many seem to be blowing motors based on craigslist content. probably lack of PM.
-
gears in dakota axles and franken it for daily use!
-
i think its just been sitting to long..
got a reman motor for a friend in CT for a 1999 or 2000 WJ.. 4.0L.. swap went fine
scottys is about to do a motor swap on a 99 wj 4.7L...
-
this is not a swap- many components mission and or hacked already.
a full doner running truck would be needed.
-
there was something funky with Immobilizer. I think the ECM may be screwed up, or the security/starter that was in it isn't fully removed.
motor was installed and would crank but timing was way out/something funky/couldn't fire, security light was on when it shouldn't have been...
and yes, some things were "made to work" already.

OMG.
x2.
-
ridding high double dirty Phat
-
Was all set to tear a valve cover off last night and, instead, it started right up. Easier than usual.
Running on 5 and still massive blowby, but drivable...
Weird.
-
Fixed!
-
Sell it before it stops running!
-
ha.
it's not like it's running well. it's gonna get a lil bit of use today, maybe last hurah maybe not. we'll see.
-
i bet it just needs a top end done, bent a valve or something stupid
you cant hurt a dump bus
-
http://fingerlakes.craigslist.org/cto/3572498624.html
-
dump bus could live?
right pump?
-
By the posting date that should be LONG gone. that is a month stale unless I misread.
Could just need a head redone, I suppose. if a valve guide seal or two were munched that could give some decent blowby, right?
I'm honestly kinda dumb about these things, especially comparatively speaking.
-
Fawk. Got so excited I was tripping over my keyboard

dibs on headlights, 3500 badges, and dually flares if this hog gets the knife ;D

I should contact him to see if he's interested in it.
I'm toying pulling the head to see what's wrong with it before anything else, but I think I'm going to wait until I have the other truck since that'll make it a paperweight.
-
solid bite on this guy, it may be going whole to St. Louis
-
nice! send it down the road!
got wheels to swap?
-
I think I have 6 16s; if not I'll soon have 6 17s.
-
solid bite on this guy, it may be going whole to St. Louis
The guy won't do a down payment/ pay ahead for delivery charge. Wants me to drive to St. Louis on good faith to deliver to his house and meet his wife w cash. Says he was recently screwed out of $2700.
Damnit. 800 miles is about 750 miles too far away to go without some cash on the table. Fail, dude.
-
how about an escrow company?
-
Paypal, he can always dispute charges and win easily.
Some people are just not too bright.
-
having been on the buyer side of a paypal screwing, "winning" doesn't actually get you your money back in a private sale. That's a joke. If the seller doesn't care about losing that account and has no money in it, there's nothing further that happens.
escrow.com looks pretty reasonable. endorsed by all the major online car sellers, and has an easy byline for purchase vs shipping. Fees under $200 for this value transaction. Doesn't look bad to me.
-
ya thats 500$ deposit worthy min
sorry he got screwed- he should do better
-
I avoid getting screwed. Glad I learned on a $40 grill not a $2700 $thing.
Haven't heard back since I told him about escrow.com, but it's been a while between responses before.
It'll make me feel better about not potentially driving into a scamster or trap of some sort too.
-
Especially "meeting his wife"
-
Yeah that parts seems odd
-
Well I just put my foot down. Escrow at least half or give me a $500 deposit, otherwise get lost. I'm betting on get lost. Real shame, would be SO much easier and totally worth the money I'm leaving on the table selling it whole.
-
did you actually talk to this guy on the phone or just mail correspondence?
-
says he's overseas, no phone availability. delivery would be to his home base here.
-
yeah, without a deposit for your time I would say its a no go.
-
number for the wife?
sounds sketchy
the plan was her to pay you cash when it gets delivered?
-
yup - then subsequently there was mention of a loan, and a picture of a check.
if he's willing to give a deposit, those issues will be dealt with*. If he's not, they are unimportant details of a deal that won't go down anyway.
*i.e. call the bank - verified to be a real bank - and be certain it's on the up and up, and able to be cashed it on the spot Saturday afternoon.

have bites on lots of parts already, a day after I posted a rough price list. exhaust brake, tow mirrors, dually flare, we'll see what actually goes.
I think I'm going to pick up a portable garage to put over it, probably look a little more presentable than a half dismantled truck, especially when body parts start coming off.

RIP Dump Bus!
My first experiences towing heavy and using a Cummins powered vehicle were in a 13spd Ram grossing 25k. It was a very loud and uncomfortable 9hr round trip, but an experience I'm greatful for and will definitely never forget hahahaha
-
It was a very loud and uncomfortable 9hr round trip
ouch!
hahaha
-
My first and only experience wasn't uncomfortable until the ride home. The pervasive mist of diesel fuel from the cracked fuel line got to be a bit much.:))
-
none of my Jeeps, Mazda, S10's, Aveo, or cab over diesel box trucks ever complained...
the CJ6 was asphyxiating from blow by, but he is getting rebuilt
-
My first and only experience wasn't uncomfortable until the ride home. The pervasive mist of diesel fuel from the cracked fuel line got to be a bit much.:))
We had an out of balance front tire for my whole ride. And that overdrive made a noise like nothing else I've heard. Don't get me wrong... it was awesome
-
You just show up Friday, strap down, and we roll in the quiet serene luxury of Dumpbus
-
that's more like it!
-
Injectors are the only sold part not yet pulled. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/04/uqesu4e9.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/04/u2ezevab.jpg)
-
you live in brighton or baltimore?
-
hahahahaha
-
whats the condition of the head lights? anything cracked?
those were the ~140$ ones off ebay right?
-
the flat steer tires really complete the look.
-
halos are out on one light. and yup
-
meh ok
-
the power boards fry, I think. old ones were a PCB in a shrink tube that wasn't sealed, didn't surprise me. New ones are potted in epoxy. I haven't checked wiring yet. IDK what voltage they run at, probably 1-2.
I just unhooked the opposite side last time. was fine.
-
anyone have an in-line fuel pump laying about that I could use?
I've got a bunch of fuel to move out of the dumpbus into a waiting tank at points in the future, and it sure would be easier to pump it than drain/siphon 5 gallons at a time.
-
I got one setup for pumping heating oil tanks. It's at chads house you can borrow it
-
I have a transfer pump for 55 gal drums...
Sent from my Z10 using Tapatalk 2
-
I just want something I can connect to the 3/8" tank draw line....
I suppose I could throw a draw straw down the filler neck and get most of it
-
Pulled the tin off one of the flares so they'd nest. That pallet is ready to ship. Nothing else done tonight. Still have to pull injectors and pack up the big turbo.
No new parts sales. I'm okay with that, it's good to be close to caught up.
-
Do you need any help with the ltl shipping
-
It's going via Forward Air, terminal to terminal. They generally do quite well for me, I've not shopped around in years.
I suppose I should have known you have other options :)

i pumped 14gals of fuel out of the 2.0 yesterday.
pulled the core on the fuel rail service shreader port, pushed a hose over it, popped the cover off the fuel pump relay, leaned a screw driver against the contactor and walked away haha

Hey, that's cheating! Brilliant, but cheating! 8)
Now I'll have to be far more ignorant/forgetful to get a mouth full of gasoline! :-\
-
ya i got a mouth full of coolant a couple weeks ago so i was pretty proud of my self that i came up with that solution lol
-
easy when you have an onboard electric pump. duh
-
There's dana 80 interest from central PA. This may be a pile of parts in a trailer and a scrap run sooner than I'd otherwise think.
same guy was asking about bumper and front clip.
that'd leave engine and driveline parts, xfer tank, doors, interior parts, cooler stack, front axle, a couple wheels, and not really much else.
Pulling the tranny and the head are the next big things. I'm betting on broken rings and deeply scored walls so the block may stay with the truck. I'll have to see if it's worth the price difference for diesel/cast versus just the shearing scrap value of the rest of the truck.
-
I don't know why I thought soft parts gaming off a skid would be okay for LTL but this wasn't accepted

So I got to whip up a crate yesterday morning. Annoying.

Should have called me there is a 4x8 pallet and a sheet of osb
-
should have called me... have bumper crates and best ltl rates
-
Next time.
I threw that together in 2 hrs from scrap. NBD
Deposit on rear axle. Time to execute on full teardown. Boo RCQ scheduling.
-
Mostly stripped the engine bay. Turbo I almost smoked :( cold side blades making housing contact.
Still need to pull the big stuff (turbo, mani, lines, valve cover, sticks, pump, tappet cover, cam, case, head, brake master & booster), but all accessories and easy stuff is off, in the trailer behind the Eagle
-
turbo bits cause of motor failure?
-
no way, it's not shelled. I didn't look super-closely, but the case isn't obviously scarred. it was just starting to make contact.
-
Well there's your problem right there!(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/10/a2uputen.jpg)
-
Probable cause? Head gasket failure?
-
Head gasket is perfect. High egt during wrong cam time caused top of piston to crack to top ring land. Loss of compression caused rich mixture and melty edges.
My reasoning anyway. The knock it picked up was probably piston slap. It's awfully loose in the bore.
-
Wow
So how do I make that not happen?
-
Not run 1500+* egt
-
There's a really short list of parts left to remove from this guy. Trailer needs some reorg to make room for the larger items and body parts.
Yesterday was a waste as far as teardown, but I might still be "done" today if I commit. Weather looks good, and the rest of the week looks damn busy.
-
Got lots of fuel out but both tanks are still in. dash out, body stripped...
Driveshaft, trans, engine, tanks. Then it'll go on the trailer, and axles need to be freed. birthday party tomorrow and dinner weds. Hopefully get it on the trailer Tuesday night and scrapped weds.
Trailer is pretty damn full. I think the body parts may go on CList.

Rain or shine tonight, it's time. I want tanks and drivetrain out tonight. Axles free would be nice too. May pull over to M4 for some plasma use. Ive got a guy who wants a body mount off the cab, and the rear shackle mounts are wanted too.
-
M4 is not in operation tonight :(
will be an hour west for family stuff.
-
your poor neighbors...
-
10-4. May sit on the trailer for a day or two then depending how my cutoff wheel supply and stamina is.
-
your poor neighbors...
:-p
-
M4 is now open tonight- kidos are sick, family party moved / post poned / canceled. Really hoping my sister pops #3 out before bigdogs to do a two for one stop!
sick 5 and 6 year old, sick husband, and 8.995 month pregnant sister! i bet that house is awesome right now!
-
oh my! I'd stay the hell away! haha
-
Sounds like fun times
-
Rain or shine tonight, it's time.
Ha.
-
There's no small shit left. I can count bolts... Just was too much to finish tonight after the ujoint at the trans refused to come peacefully.
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/17/upunevu6.jpg) (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/17/yhajape7.jpg)
4 for the toolbox. 4 for the xfer tank. 4 for safety chain loops and 6 or 8 for the bed. 4 for the hitch, 12 or 14 for the trans and 4 for the engine.
Then I can put it on the trailer and free the axles. Not sure the cab mount is getting cut out. That seems like work.
-
So what piece of the truck are you saving to hang on the wall 8)
-
There are a few potentials... Grill and back window top the list
-
back window is cool- needs a sticker DB sr
-
What a fucking fucklot of fucking work.
It's on the trailer. Needs axles removed. Engine block needs to be stripped.
Trailer is full. Engine, trans, xfer tank are chilling in the driveway :barf:
Need to rearrange things again on Saturday to stack more and fit more. I can't wait for this mess to go the fuck away. Scrapping will probably be a two part. I don't think I'll bring in the engine block or much of my other scrap Saturday. I just want te big stuff gone. Now!
-
Where's Waldo?
$310 and I didn't clean out the back yard pile at all.
Engine block didn't go in yet either. May pull rotating assy - it's stripped otherwise. Oh, and rear seal retainer.
Been at it since 10:00 nonstop.
Trans, tanks, engine block, front axle don't have homes. Driveway piles are about as neat as they can be. Should be able to shift some things to the garage with more work but the tractor is still solidly blocked in right now. I'm ready for a break!!
-
... the tractor is still solidly blocked in right now...
The grass is growing. Don't bury it too deep...
-
It won't cut much w a snowblower on the front of it.
-
Driveway mostly cleaned today. Only tanks and front axle still out. Trans and block are in front of the Jetta and the rest is in the trailer. Rearranged some of the garage too. Didn't swap the tractor to summer detail yet not completely I bury it yet though. Next week!
-
PayPal pending on the transmission. Sweet!
Tapatalking in traffic
-
paid.
-
nice.. how much that fucker worth
-
3471.02 after paypal fees.
I'm going to check ABF's rate against that FedEx quote on Monday. When could I grab a crate? I kinda can't wait to get to packing that thing up. It's gonna leave a really nice hole in my garage!
-
I can check as well with my account
-
I was starting to think about this as a viable option. Baaaaaals.
