i am amazed at my Hypertherm 380

i really dont think i need bigger, it clean cuts 3/8"s with a skilled operator, and i have hogged through 5/8's also

it schools both of the millers i have used at twice the cost. (Keith, Cora, and my uncle have the same ones, forget what size it is) I am careless about air and consumables.

mine is a 26amp machine.  im not sure i really need anything bigger for what i do, short of cutting bumper Dring tabs out of 3.4 but ruff stuff is for that.

i would stay with miller or hypertherm or thermal dynamics

DO not buy a HF pile

look ahead at consumable costs.  its 18$ for a 5 pack for mine- not terrible.  in a year i have used probably 10

used thermal dynamics seem common. no HF pile for me, cost is too close to the real thing.

i'll just wait and watch for a good deal

specs of machine look good, but again look at consumable costs and availability too.

i just replaced the entire plastic shell of the gun for like 15$ because it had completely cracked and had been taped together in 4 places.  some manuf you have to buy the hole lead which can be hundreds....

here is a tip.

I discovered that if you put a little mig nozzle gel (anti spatter) on the drag tip (smear a thin layer on), it will make your consumables last a long time.

I found this out while cutting aluminum sheet.

mine has 4 consumable parts.  the electrode inside the tip is what gets beat up the most on mine.  then the tip.  the other two parts at most i replace once a year when they fail.

5 packs of tips and electrodes are 15-20$ for the powermax380

what ever you justify to spend on a welder / plasma, you will have gladly paid 4X that after the first week of using it and wish you had gotten it sooner.

i got my 380 for 600$ used.  its treated me well.  im not sure i really need anything bigger.  something more durable id like but i think they all require minimal maintenance to keep in operation.

Buy the best quality you can afford.
Also consider that Miller products have heavy support right here in Roch. By Mahaneys Welding supply. The guys there are great and they carry everything. Even give us loaner equipment if needed.

Something to be said for spending  money at local businesses.

Just my 2cents.

We have an older Miller Spectrum 375 for hand work and the brand new 675 with machine torch for the plasma table. Both have reasonable consumable costs, And they are readily available.
