I’m also looking to upgrade or downgrade..
weight is my bid issue.. the lighter the trailer the better.. all I’m hauling is my YJ.. but towing with the SRT makes weight an issue...

The Titan can tow 10k son!
Title: Trailers...for the normal man
Post by: mr.mindless on March 07, 2012, 12:45:47 PM
Heard a story about that supposed tow rating this weekend... I'm sure it was down to poor weight distribution but when an Excursion and a Titan have roughly the same tow rating, and trading the trailer from the Ex that'll comfortably do 80 with it makes the Titan white-knuckle at 55, something doesn't add up.
Title: Trailers...for the normal man
Post by: etk300ex on March 07, 2012, 01:06:19 PM
I can tow 15k at 80 and not even know there's a trailer on :P

Seriously I've had no issues other than the first time I towed and left it in OD and the trans got hot.

I'd chalk that story up to user error
Title: Trailers...for the normal man
Post by: mr.mindless on March 07, 2012, 01:33:43 PM
I dunno. It was bad enough the guy sold the truck right away. Doesn't mean it wasn't user error anyway

FWIW, I just picked a trailer up from these guys.

http://www.appalachiantrailers.com/car-hauler-trailers.php

They were cheap enough it didn't make sense to me to look at used ones... They custom built me one with no dovetail for the same price and I picked it up in PA.

Unconventional?  Ive got 30 of those.    Looks like Ligit trailer axles according to nameplate.  Not a bad price at all for a 10k trailer.
Title: Re: Trailers...for the normal man
Post by: Ryan on March 27, 2012, 01:12:00 PM
Pass, get a good one with the right wheels.

A 10k trailer is heavier than a 7k trailer, you dont need the extra weight either.

i also have 4 new 225 trailer tires off a brand new camper, D rated, 15" wheel.

Title: Re: Trailers...for the normal man
Post by: etk300ex on March 27, 2012, 01:34:31 PM
I'm want an equipment trailer, I like the ramps and they seem to be more heavy duty all the way around.  and with the price diff between a 7k and 10k is like $300, its going to be hard to not step up to the 5k axles for that little cost.  I'm not skeered of 500 more pounds.
Title: Re: Trailers...for the normal man

I was just thinking the same - but if I get one "just to have" it's going to be a deckover.

if someone makes a deal on this I'm sure I could grab it along with a Barracuda in a few weeks.

Weekend after the race or weekend after big dogs? No rush on the Cuda job...

Hoping for one of those weekends to be NJ and the other to be CT (for Arie's CJ3 if it ever gets done and a nearby TDI if it's still available and I have any leftover money). If later that's fine too. Only possible complication is (the shot tires? And) Alex might have a northbound car from NJ too. Not sure if I could manage to put a trailer on my trailer, with a car at least half on the trailer... One of those things I'd rather play with at home before committing to, you know? Kinda like three Mazda2s ;D
Title: Re: Trailers...for the normal man

Yup, life is full of maybes.

/Maybe/ Alex would weigh in here, and settle one of them and then one question would be answered and I could commit...

i would not pay 1000$ for that pile

look at the spare tire caved in, it has BRAND new tires fora reason, the same reason the last trailer erok bought had brand new tires

the axles are bent and its a WHOPPED POS

Dont ever buy a used trailer with new tires.  #1 rule.

Hey mine did not have new tires I bent that axle all by myself! Lol

Went to rotate the extreme camber tire tonight and noticed that the only thing holding the u bolt to the plate is rust.  Nuts are completely disintegrated. That could of been bad.

Crap. Just had a quote done for a P&J trailer.  Minimal option upgrades jumped my semi-do-able base price of ~$2800 to $3750. He only talked me into the axle upgrades and a different hitch.
(He pointed out that with the 2 -3500# axles, after you take the trailer weight off, you're only at about 4500# carrying capacity.  I'd like a touch more)

OK, need final input on this sucker. P&J 32' gooseneck buggyhauler (drive over fenders), no dovetail, 5' slide in ramps, 2-7000#axles. Sound good or should I upgrade anything?

(any benefit of going to douglas fir or rough oak over the pine? should I do the triple axle?)
Title: Re: Trailers...for the normal man
Post by: mr.mindless on January 15, 2013, 12:47:41 PM
I'm against triple axle.

douglas or especially oak will last you longer than pine decking.

I haven't seen a larger than single car buggyhauler, if it's as nice as Wayne's 18' tagalong, that'll be a SWEET trailer.

Someone should look at this 14k aluminum goose.  32' overall, 28' deck.  If I was goose shopping, this would be it.

My 10k is still for sale, I will take $2200 for it, with a spare tire. Anyone that has pulled it knows how heavy duty it is.
