Spark looks weak and I left the key on. I'm betting I fried the coil. Battery was not flat though, so it's pretty damn good.
I have a spare coil somewhere. Got it for that pinto motor to stand test it and never did. reasonably sure I didn't send it with the engine.

Weak spark seems likely to be the issue.
Assuming timing is good etc. all ignition parts are new. Cap rotor condenser wires plug and I think coil. Perhaps related. One plug wire cape apart. All were poor fits. I don’t have other plug wires with proper connectors. Coil and cap are female, wires are male. Had to spread every end of every wire to fit snug.
Firing order and timing unconfirmed.
Dug out my spare coil. It makes no spark at all. Bag had some oil in it.
Haven’t come across my multimeters yet. Might be in the racing toolbox in joe. I’ve at least looked at almost everything.
I may need to throw new coil and condenser at it?
Weak shitty spark is definitely _a_ problem. Just don’t know if it’s _the_ problem.

Wires were on the dizzy in the wrong order, haven’t found the timing marks yet to see if they’re in the right positions.

Spare coil gives spark after realizing the truck is positive ground.
But still no fire.
Plug wires fixed. Position and order confirmed.
Didn’t put a gauge on it but all holes have compression.
Not sure what’s missing unless it’s still weak spark. I found a little tang of plastic in the cap that could have been screwing up rotor to coil but now I don’t know.
Guess I should get some starting fluid. Maybe the new vaporizer isn’t working right. It was a warehouse deal from amazon and had clearly been installed before.

Haven’t seen my torch yet.
Swapped coils with the mowzer. Forklift coil is shit, tractor runs like a wasted cycle motor. Hits barely enough to idle.
Was looking for a choke, trying to use my hand and feeling no suction. found a shutoff valve between the mixer and intake mani that was closed.
It has caught several times but not actually run.
Dist doesn’t want to twist in its hole. Propane all frozen up from lack of coolant flow.
I think it may run tomorrow after it thaws

i didnt think of it when you mentioned choke. but i believe choking is the opposite of the effect you want here. you want WOT manfold (low vacuum) to dump more fuel....

when I had it catching last night, it was at WOT. don't recall my hand-choke position.
I wasn't thinking of the reduction in pressure differential (wrong words, but catch my drift) that choking makes.

Makes sense. My forklift starts best when I have my leadfoot firmly on the throttle. If I don't do that, it'll be cranking and cranking until it finally starts.

it catches when I take my hand choke away and that pressure differential in the intake is greatest and it gets richest.
There's a pressure sample port on the vaporizer. I'll look into that.
I know gas is making it all the way to the mixer since I've seen the line freeze up and the mixer freeze up. I wonder if there's a richness adjustment on the mixer or if I'm just fighting timing and weak spark (for unknown reasons - spark looks good at the points. could be shit plug wires)

uncovered a marking on the carburator, J&S.
Found online a description that the J&S and Impco parts are NOT interchangable. They work on different principles of regulation: the Impco regulator wants some vacuum from the carb, and the J&S supplies regulated gas to the carb.

I have something more to search on now for trying to find the pressure daiphragm, but the vaporizor I just put on isn't useful at all with this carb. Fuck.

Grill parts didn’t make it run. Thought a grill Reg might have a chance of working like the original zenith. The diaphragm in the mixer may also be shot.
I think I need to find a proper impco mixer and put that on to match to modern vaporizer.
Or put it back to gasoline. Ford 8n tractor carb does not look far off, $90.

Doubt the grill regulator have the flow you’ll need. I couldn’t get my propane converted 3500w generator to run on bbq tank & grill regulator when applying heavy load via air compressor.

wouldn't run at all. probably flooded. set up that way, it just flowed gas until liquid ran out, maybe because it's not an "on demand" type regulator - or maybe because the mixer has a diaphragm or something that's not in working order.

What the hell. So, what do the regulator/converter do for you without any of propane running through it?
It should be like this, as far as I understand;
Propane Tank > regulator > mixer
along with coolant running through the regulator which you did. but you installed a bbq grill regulator to the vaporizer directly, bypassing the regulator/converter?

No, vaporizor then regulator then mixer. can't regulate the pressure of the liquid fuel, that's done after it's back to gas. In the modern stuff, the vaporizer and regulator are one unit. In the old stuff on the lift now, they were two parts and the regulator is the known failure. Can't source new diaphragms for it though they are screw on, easy replacement. Just NLA.
Need to find my calipers to measure mounting bolt pattern. It's a week to get a carb, but I think I'll be further ahead for a $75 cost. Assuming it's 2-1/4 or 2-3/8, can just bolt on.

I fixed my post, oops. I meant to say mixer. 2 in 1 unit. Propane tank straight to regulator/vaporizer then to the mixer.

I should probably pull the mixer off the engine and go over it closely, there's maybe a slim chance that it's a dual fuel mixer and maybe I could add gasoline to it? That would be too good to be true.

Found I left the key on again. Dumb fuck.
Two coils on the way. Haven’t checked either coil I left keyed on overnight, but the first one rattled.
I wonder if that’s what killed the one that was on the motor? So easy to do when fighting with a no-start.

Lots of catching, and warm exhaust, but no more than a couple puffs after starter disengaged. Hard to mess with throttle and choke and main mix with one hand while cranking ignition with the other.
May have to look harder for timing mark to set spark timing. Idle mix screw is under the intake mani so that’ll be fun if it needs a tweak.
Didn’t look at permanent fueling real hard. Can’t find feed from stock tank but it’s not TOO groty. Could work, but no idea what stock fuel pump was either. Gravity feeding from a funnel now. 1 pint of fuel through it.

Never manage to keep any starting fluid around, have none.
I expect this is a timing thing. Changing fuels probably changes timing needs. I have not checked how strong spark is with current new in box coil, but I did manage to shut the key off last night and not fry another 🙄

to check timing, crank it one way 20 degrees try to start. if its better great, if its worse crank it 40 degrees back the the other way. if you have no change you have another problem. this assumes you have not comepletly cluste fucked it from where it was.

Any kind of flammable aerosol will do. Brake cleaner, carb cleaner, hair spray. Hell, a spray bottle filled with gas should work too. Lol.

Haven’t managed to make the distributor move yet. Took the night off. Sarah visiting a friend tomorrow till Monday, so will have time to play or abuse as needed.

Either these coils I got are shit or I fried condensers when I left keys on, too.
Deere won’t run on the new coil (i bought a pair of same). Running like wasted cycle engine and won’t quite stay running with choke/accelerator fiddling.
Similar to how the fork is cranking and catching but won’t actually start.
Will check everything for voltage drops and check resistances tomorrow.
In other shop news, the alignment computer works.

Copyright on the CD is 2008. I didn’t see how new it goes but that van hasn’t changed since 1983 so I’m not worried.
I need a workbench set up so I can quit using the lift as a workbench! Haha

New condenser and the Deere is running on it’s new coil and the forktruck runs too, but only on one (of 4).

Fiddling and testing things got it running. Perhaps had been fouled plugs from start attempts, didn't get as far us pulling them since I don't trust the wires. One wire ohms out at 2,000 and the other three around 750. Coil wire at 690. Nice for brand new wires. I've had to put one back together when the terminal fell off.
Annoyed at how fast it sucks through a quart of fuel in my funnel, faster than I can really fuck with it. Hopefully I can back off that main jet now that it runs 😂

nice! progress! it is surprising how fast my forktruck uses fuel also. it empties a ford coolant tank in about 10 minutes of use. it has to be almost 3/4 of a gallon id say.
i had to add a shut off because i assume the float bowl needle leaks. it hydro locks the motor if you dont shut the gravity fuel to the carb.

Tightened up loose things in steering and replaced a missing bolt. Took 2/3 of the play out of it.
It’s missing nothing, it seems. This was a manual steering unit. That seems insane.
Can’t find where fuel is supposed to exit the existing gas tank and found no fuel pump provision on the engine.

It’s not leaking, but I can’t find the top for this funnel so slosh is a big issue.

throw a paper rag or paper towel on it before your zip tie. pre filter and slosh control
or rip a cooland or wiper tank off of one of your piles

It’ll get a coolant something once I find a clean one.
There’s a screen in the bottom of the funnel so that’s good for crap. I’m almost out of gasoline and I’ve got to drive real gently.
Steering better with the vastly reduced slop.
I’d have to do a bit of fab work to put a different steering box in it l, but it will probably eventually get an Astro box. I think swing is right.
First pallet load stored upstairs.
Gonna cut a door pass through before I do the second. Eventually move that vent stack. Bathroom roof feels as solid as office ceiling where the storage is.

On the gravel It spills a lot of fuel from the open bowl.
Rear tires have probably 2†travel, center pivot. It’s good to go!
Front tires are foamed. Tears are tubed and I put them to 50psi. Had been 30/36. Steering tolerable.
Couple more pallets, then the mill.

I used a wrong one for transfer cases and it cost me a yoke and range shifter on the 203/205. open bottom, and it tipped and fell while partially loaded, moving to grab another case.
I may dump those for any use more precious than tires or lumber. The two Pepsi ones are tiiiiiiits.

Found the funnel cap, so i can make time now! but I’m about out of fuel. All I’ve got left is in the line from funnel to carb.
I’ll definitely take that boat tank, if i don’t use for the lift it’ll be extended run generator fuel for Joe. I was looking for one last year.
Hoping to use the onboard tank, and rewire to get gauges incl fuel, and oil warning light back to avoid key-on/no-run again.
Oil and air filters coming this week. Oil looks oooooooold.

Runs FANTASTIC with a fuel pump on it. Need to lean out idle mix a bit more,
Smokes.
Got fittings to put stock tank in service, will deal with that sometime. Not tonight. Need to borescope the tank and decide what to dump into it where to make sure it’s not leaky

Have had it not want to start twice. Has something to unload for my neighbor today and looked at it.
Put vacuum to the carb to try and suck any crap out. Checked spark at all 4 holes. Reset main mixture screw to 2 turns out and just kept backing it out until it started. Ran great. Leaned it out until speed increased, richened it back to where it was.
Running great again.
Third time I’ve done that exact same set of things.
I figure it ought to start well there with some choke, but it doesn’t.
Idle/WOT/partial, with full/part/no choke it just doesn’t want to fire. I don’t get it.
Let it sit for 3ish hours from then to when the truck got here and it fired right up. Got his roll up door off the truck like a pro and cross countries right over to his shed.

Static timing, no advance. But I have not tweaked it since initial set based on starting and sound.
Supposedly ticket on tweaking is max manifold vacuum at idle. Should be pretty easy to do that, and worthwhile.
Wish idle mix was easier to set. Carb has it on the wrong side due to changed application.

this thing has continued to be mint since my last posts. It will eventually have steering box issues, the cap bolts loosen due to shear loading. If I'm not going to figure out how to put power steering on it, I need to safety wire them to avoid shearing bolts and wearing out threads in the box.
I've had the fuel tank off to bring to the gas station at least once and it started again after without any issue. Cold starts after sitting are great. Don't notice the extreme fuel burn when sucking from a 6 gallon tank.
I'm REALLY wanting onsite fuel distribution. Seems I'm always out of gas, diesel, or both.

I'm between 2 and 3 miles either direction, and no shoulder to speak of.
something I can fork onto the Ram and go put 50-100 gallons of each in, then gravity feed from the top shelf of my pallet racking seems like a nice dream. Indoors like that should help with condensation, but makes me worry a bit about fire safety/ sparks+vapors from doing what I do, and a bit about leaks but that potential exists anywhere.
Would be nice to get a bulk rate and/or Offroad no-road-tax fuel too but that seems far fetched.

Very nearly ready to bring in the backhoe.
May have some shelves leftover for Beetle or camper parts. Almost tome to lose racecars in the hauler for winter too, I don’t think joe is getting worked on as far as kitchen/bath now, and I’m betting against a California trip at this point...

This lifting device helped unload the new lifting device. Time for a new thread.
Trailer out from under the hoe, in the shop. No carnage. Accidentally had the camera in that area not recording (since it does t see anything interesting typically - not in its final location) so missed my sketchiness. Had to move the trailer with the hoe halfway unloaded and had to counterweight the tongue heavily. 7/10 sketchy. Unstrapped engine 10’ in air on stacked pallets.
The Clark is a good traction motor. I love my quick hitch. It’s almost not in the way of forks, and for many quick normal things the forks maybe won’t interfere with trailer moves. Moving a dead vehicle with the lunette ring I have, forks would always be in the way.

Stuck it in the yard moving trailers earlier this week. Second time i did that. Jacked it up in situ and self recovered. True offroad status. Chains are sized for the John Deere. Slightly too big for the forklift but with a couple short bungees they could stay on for winter if needed

Axles and fenders rotted, rest seems good. Ramps and jack and lights present.
Axles are more $$ than the last time I bought but still worth it.

12' of 2x6 box steel cheaper than 400 (maybe not with steel price now lol?) to make extensions like Nick has for his.
real forks that are long weigh a ton and might be a hassle to move around and swap on and off.
chances are the interface is wrong and will need to be reworked on one end anyway

yeah I was thinking about how relatively easy these 42" forks are to R&R and how something twice as heavy won't be.
I've seen a lot of fork extensions get bent moving cars at Monster Jam but that's with tele handlers that can pick 10k no sweat. I probably don't have the picking force at the tips to do damage like that. But they sure are impossible to try and straighten well if it turns out that I do.

$275ish at Uline, $180 on FBM for new extensions advertised with questionable grammar.
Uline notes that OSHA says 150% of fork length is the max for extensions, that means 72" is over limit for my ~42" forks.

Would love to make this charge it’s own battery. Has 2 poles on the alt/gen that are just open to one another. I was hoping to see AC or DC voltage between them or chassis when spinning.
12v positive ground now. No idea if originally 6 or 12 volt.
There’s a large three terminal solid state thing mounted next to the gen. I assume it’s a regulator. Factory wiring is abandoned but in place. Checking continuity on this things now, maybe I’ll be able to figure more out from there. No readable markings I’ve found to help ID things.

I need to make an easy top of mast hook for picking oversize things. This was too many attempts before success. Or long fork extensions but I know which one is 10-20x the cost of the other.

How much can this thing lift? I have a large delivery coming to the farm in a few weeks and need to be able to lift about 2000lb's off of a tractor trailer. I know it is to much for my tractor and also may be too much for my bro-n-laws also so I am looking for alternatives.

wouldn't start last week, DUMPING fuel from carb. float sunk or needle and seat contaminated/rotted. need to remove and investigate.

i added a 3$ fuel shut off valve to mine the first time it did that and i had to pull the plugs to clear the lock

I guess that’s one upside of an updraft carburetor. They can’t Hydro lock from fuel leakage

carb fixed, appears fuel leak was from the input not from the bowl overflowing.
this thing is always a hard start, annoying. For a while I had the technique down but I didn't quite get it fired up tonight. Played with the distrib setting a sneeze but didn't bring over the big battery charger to make up the dead battery.
Confirmed the generator on it is dead. Joined F & D, hooked to power, and it didn't turn into a motor. Probably figure out how to swap a small case LS alt on it, or something else I have a few of laying around.

Anything LS related is bound to have a good amp output and steal much of your 14.32 horse pressures...

cleaned plugs, reset carb, got it fired.
distributor is sticky in its bore so didn't really get to try to fine tune timing to maximize intake vacuum as directed, but at least it starts and runs again. be nice to give it some electricity so it could sprout a light or two this time of year...

Good crank, occasional catching. Lots of choke/accel fiddling, but not quite a real fire before the battery is done.

Carried 2 pallets of wood pellets to the house garage from back of the shop. Running like a champ. Might take a couple degrees timing out for easier starting. Sure is running well though.
Don’t have a pallet jack yet, successfully rolled them across the front of the garage to their proper places on 4 2” steel fence posts. Worked a charm. Didn’t blow through the bottom of the pallets as I feared.
Lift could not pick up double stack for 4,000# approx. didn’t stall, just lifted rear tires probably as high as I’d want to.

Definitely would be nice if it charged its own battery but this thing is currently a champion and I forgive all my earlier anger.
suspect it will blow up soon or blow a seal and dump fluids everywhere because it's being really really good right now. moved totes this morning after fueling furnace with 2bbl of oil last night, just dead nuts good.

i think mine will be for sale or scrapped this year- i haven't used it in over a year. really have no use for it since the cub does all lifting, and has off concrete capability.

If it works, sell it. I've been watching forklift ads and they go real fast, no matter how crappy it is if priced right.
