Title: Saint Michael (was: Big Things in Eagle Land)
Post by: mr.mindless on February 17, 2012, 10:36:07 PM
I have a couple big things coming up on the Eagle.  I've taken care of 2/3 of the new audio install, I think all the burned out lights are set at last, I've still need to do seats, headliner, and a few other things but the next big batch comes at once:

front wheel bearings - driver side priority
driver side CV axle
brakes
strut rod bushings

then I can hit a shop and have them:
swap my wheels
alignment
inspection

Smike, I could really use your press for the bearings.  Did you take a look for that O-ring or should I just hit Cat? I should have all the parts Monday, I'd like to tackle it then if I can. If you're booked up I can just pull the knuckle and bring it over. and not tie up a bay. I know you're busy...

Sounds like I'll plan to pull the knuckle then :)

I might be trying to squeeze in an Acura brake job this week myself too.

Strut rod bushings are on the way too.

Holy hell, FedEx tracking says they're at my door. Came out of buffalo, no idea why they'd have gotten Saturday deliver

Too bad the poker run is tomorrow.

and so it begins:

Vic has an email asking him to call me about when I can bring my knuckles over to have the center holes opened up for Jeep unit bearings.

I spent about 4-5 hours applying heat, pressure, and percussive force to the hub with the bad bearings and all I got for it was worse bearings.  Never budged.  Broke a 14b drum that I tried pressing on first.  Then plasma'd out a "correct" plate from 1/2" steel and bent it.  Didn't break the hub or bolts quite yet but I'm certain I'm right on the edge of doing so.

Dumpbus II right around the bend!! ;D
Title: Re: Big Things in Eagle Land

Appears there are two unit bearings as far as I'm concerned.  84-89 and 90-99.

old is smaller all around.  OD, pilot, depth. says hub pilot is 3.75"

new says hub pilot is 3.942"

I measured 3 7/8" which would be 3.875 on Smike's sample.  Hrmph!
Guess I need to double check things.  Maybe I'll put the brakes on this and deal with it next week instead of rushing things. No real reason NOT to take the Cummins to Cleveland and it's not like I'm going to leave the Eagle to rot if I back burner it for a bit.

Looked up dimensions and cross references. The 84-89 unit bearing is a near match dimensionally. Same offset, closer diameters.

Just emailed Arie. We'll see what I can pull off in a day or so!

I have a good used one still I believe. I know I have a new one also, but Arie should have them in stock.

there's one in stock at nuway, hoping I can grab that one today and meet Vic tomorrow with it, then grab the other that's coming from Buffalo whenever.

The only potential challenge is spline depth. My CVs have a seal surface on the inboard shoulder so the splines end early.  The late unit bearings are full splined and it bottoms out about 1/4" too early.  I'll see what the early bearings do, may have to knock some splines down.  Hoping I can keep the bearings off-the-shelf though in case I need to replace one but I can't imagine one will go bad when they last 200k on Jeeps.
Title: Re: Big Things in Eagle Land
Post by: mr.mindless on February 21, 2012, 03:36:13 PM
another couple potential issues - the old style hub has a lot more stick through, not sure if it may give CV alignment/plunge issues.

Looking at the knuckle, I may want to add some gussets if I'm taking that large bore size all the way through.

Really too bad that hub wouldn't just fucking press apart. what a pain in the dick.

Vic says he gets to the shop between 8-8:30, I'll aim to make my plan tonight and meet him there, then.
Maybe I'll try pressing the hub apart once more but I really am thinking it'll snap.

edited from my Nest posts

Here's the OE Eagle hub:
Flange diameter measures 5.70", hub pilot diameter measures about 3 5/8" and the knuckle steps down beyond that diameter to hold the inner seal.  I'll get it bored out to 3.75" through.

Here's the 90-99 application Jeep unit bearing, TIMKEN Part # 513084:
Bolt Quantity=5 Flange Dia=6.043" Bolt Circle Dia=4.5" Bolt Size=1/220" Wheel Pilot Dia=2.812" Brake Pilot Dia=2.832" Flange Offset=2.133" Hub Pilot Dia=3.942" Splines=27

And here is the 84-89 application unit bearing, BCA/ Timken 513107

Hub Assembly; Front Wheel Bolt Quantity=5 Flange Dia=5.69" Bolt Circle Dia=4.5" Bolt Size=1/220 Wheel Pilot Dia=2.81" Brake Pilot Dia=2.83" Flange Offset=1.81" Hub Pilot Dia=3.75" Splines=27

The old style is much deeper, need to see how this will effect CV shaft depth and alignment, I may have to go for the newer style after all and figure out what to do for brake rotors  :-\
I've got a couple things to check before I pull the trigger on milling, I think.  Still hoping to do it first thing tomorrow though.

Looking at the knuckle, I think I'll want to gusset the top where it necks down, going all the way through with that diameter will take away a lot of the material that holds the top to the body. The caliper bracket bridges the back side but I think I'd want to add some material back in for long term durability.

There was no issue whatsoever getting the hub out of the knuckle.  That took about 2 minutes, tops. It's pressing the hub apart to change the bearings.

Casting differences can eat my asshole. Have r&r'd the driver side 4 times clearancing the steering arm for the CV with its less than 1/8" difference in plunge.

Passenger side was fine.

Rear brake job done and new wheels on. I think they'll look okay, don't have a feel for it in the garage.

Little more grinding to do tomorrow and it'll be ready for align & inspect. Ah, crap, headlight work needed too since one is out... Oh and the blown out muffler... I might just have Scotty's throw that on. Though it's not like I'll get this done this week anyway at this rate.

Weee 2.5 hours of sleep. I'm dumb :)

I need to look at what's on the top end. On the bottom a coilover could be made to work very easily, the spring has a bracket that runs to a mount with a bolt through it. Aaaaand the bushings are shot there on both sides. What's the shortest you do?

Finished the headlights in this last night, and replaced an alt belt too.  Turns out a little squeal turns into a belt eater when you put 100% load on an alternator.

Now I'm out of excuses to not get it inspected so I need to get that taken care of. Should get an alignment too, so I guess it'll wait until my trailer is cleared off or I con someone into giving me a ride back from Scotty's.

Tried to fix temp gauge last week. Wire was disconnected, hooking it up made the gauge move a tiny bit. Swapped sensor - no change.

Need to check engine ground. Could be bad cluster too. Fuel gauge is jumpy too, I always assumed sender. Should swap in the parts car cluster and see what it does.

MPG are falling through the floor. Every tank worse than the last. Down to 10.9 last fill, uncorrected for the tires (probably ~10% off?). Bet the cat is clogged. Some pieces were in the muffler when I changed it.

Still need to fix the tranny mount as well. Not a listed part anywhere so I'll have to make something work.

Pulled the head liner tonight, sealed up the body side hatch hinges and the top of the windshield. Bailed out the spare tire well and left things open to dry. Bad rear leak was definitely the passenger side hinge.

That's a really big headliner. I don't know if I'm good enough for that with the thin material I bought. Need more spray goo anyway. Probably do it in the garage this weekend.

Headliner only half done. Shoulda bought two cans of spray glue :(

I r&r'd the leaking side window. Took a lot of elbow grease to get all the old seal off the glass. It was the body side that had let go, pretty much the entire top and back of the window. Fixed a bad part of the seal in the back glass and put on the missing trim there from the parts car too.

So hopefully I'm done with this situation!

Semi productive but I slept too much and did too little. Didn't get anything underneath looked at at all (oil change, cat, 4x4, trans mount) nor did I get the Nissan buffed out.

Found and fixed a vacuum leak after I got home. Idles like a champ now.

Turned down full choke idle too, should be a little less than the 2750 it sounded like before, now. That'll be more reasonable.

Internets say this stupid Carter BBD that NO ONE knows how to tune right is good for 25-27 Em Pee Gees when tuned right. We'll see if it gets any better than my ~11 now that it's idling at idle instead of sitting at low throttle all the time. My bet: no. Probably will still be set way too rich.

stock 258 w/weber TFI ignition Ba10 and 307 gears...  30" bfg AT's...

all through HS and first 2 years of collage..

I was getting anywhere from 18-21 combined city and Hwy...

would make sense to me that a car vs a brick would get more just from the areodynamics

West Springfield to Syracuse averaged 71-77mph depending on how long I took to buy a Monster and take a piss. 15.1mpg

Same I did on the way back from Toronto.

going a couple MPH slower I got 1mpg less - on the way to both shows. although there's a little bit of city driving on those tanks.

Not terrible for a carbed thing without OD and no lockup

Acceptable sizes in order of preference
215/75r15
225/70r15
215/80r15
225/75r15 (what it has now)
205/75+/r15

I've wanted one of those since the day they came out.

I will own one, but not until I have a hoist. The motor/tranny/case need to come out the bottom for damn near anything that goes wrong. Almost all engine accessories, O2 sensors, timing chains... They're a goat to work on.

I was actually looking at them again before Dumpbus blew up. But then I kinda had to replace that instead. And then I tried to steer Kim that way when she was dog hauler shopping. But I should really hold out for the hoist.

Deciding between 205 or 235 studded snows both under $300.

235s are mounted on potentially usable s10 alloys. But even bigger? It'll be fine!

Need to keep an eye out for summer ATs or MTs now. These will be sweet for the poker run Sunday. Gonna drop em off at Scotty's to swap and sticker. Maybe oil change too since she's overdue. That'll be a first ever for me I think

bet diesels need not apply for that sort of rate, otherwise it would even be worth the miles.

I need to bring the Ram in for a steering linkage recall. may have them confirm ABS codes when I do that, see if I can talk them into a lower rate than $90 since it'll be in a bay anyway. My bet is "no"

The tdi swap plan gives me 5sp and low range with toy parts too.
