‘97 Z3
« on: December 11, 2022, 09:45:57 PM »
Another roadster followed me home. Runner, driver. 4 cyl/ 5 speed, hoping it’s a 30mpg machine.

Has a couple paint issues, had a trunk full of water from antenna and CHMSL leaks. Hopefully sealed up the stop light, fixed a rotten battery terminal, have a new grommet for the antenna inbound along with a new rear window for the top and trunk struts.

126k on it. Previous owner (ur student) floated the title and ran it for 90 days/ 600 miles on a PA in-transit. NY papers look good and numbers match. Will bring papers in Tuesday or Friday for a title. Plan to reg historic in the spring and send the z4 if this one is good, unless Sarah wants to keep that. Spent the evening looking it over from the top side today and it seems so far so good.

Total investment at about 4000 right now with the parts. Within dollars of the z4 and it’s dumb automatic and computer complications.

NY title.

NY does require a PA title to be notarized. I went through that with something or another but not a recent one.

Went to put the new window in the top today and the zipper is gone in the top side. Stitching all pulled.

Oops

First surprise so far

Changed radiator in this today. Hopefully fixes coolant leak. Pretty easy job, plenty of room to work with the 4cyl.

Couldn’t ID source precisely but rad and overflow are all one unit on this, so should be good.

Hopefully get the top done tomorrow and be ready to rock this thing.

Got the bad soft top entirely off in about 3 hours. Real fun job. Only one mistake made, someone went a bit deep with her knife and we have to make a new strap from seatbelts. They were in rough shape too, so no huge loss.

Need to get a couple other parts (tension cables over the side windows were both broken) before it can wrap up. Cleaning up the adhesive around the back where the top meets the body is probably going to take about as much time as removal. Hopefully things self-align decently with as many rivets as need to go back in during assembly.

Took another three hours just to get adhesive goo off. Probably 2-3 hours remaining until done.

Will be a TON of fun to secure the back of the top to the tub of the car while coordinating sealant not contaminating the visible part of the top and working inside the car.

Need to review right order of operations before I move forward from here so I don’t paint myself into a corner with anything.

Too tight. No adjustments and a few things yet to secure, so hopefully it’ll stretch a bit and find it’s happy place. Hope I can get it to close with a second hand tomorrow and let it get a few sun cycles. Or find a strap I secured that I can loosen half an inch.

found a way to pull it shut to give it some stretch/settling time. not quite easy enough for daily driving parking with the top up, but at least functional.

decided to complete the install and do that. it's closer to closing all the way already, and I just buttoned it up. what a bear

Took it down to Toomeys Corners to fill it up. Drives very well. Will probably do paperwork next week, this week is real short with holiday and taking Friday off to work the air show.

AC chargattempted. Had been holding +15psi system pressure. I didn’t vacuum it first. Holding slightly low on the high side; couldn’t get it to suck much more in.

Currently 70F
Should be 35-40psi low/145-160psi high
Actual is 36 low/125 high. It is blowing cool but not cold. We’ll see if it holds this charge.  Ac off, system pressure went to about 90psi
