Interesting reply I got from a friend when asking about a rear for the MJ...

"8.25 29 spline with KJ disc brakes. Easily available with 4.10s. An early Liberty axle is perfect size, just more brackets to remove, but will already have the disc brakes.

Cheap and plenty strong. No c-clips, perfect width. No carrier break when regearing. Small housing offers good clearance. No draw backs compared to an XJ/MJ 44, except they need a good cover - but they all need a good cover anyway...."

Seen anything at the yard?

Liberties are still pretty new. Don't think I've seen one at J&J.

Why go for specifically a KJ's 8.25? You can get a 29 spline out of any 97 or later XJ that doesn't have ABS. If you pull one for a 4 cylinder, it should already have 4.10s in it. The only real difference is that that XJ's has drums and is already set up for leaf springs. There are a few draw backs to the 8.25 vs the 44. 8.25s do have C-clips and the housing hangs down a good bit due to the large lip on the bottom of it (though this can be ground or cut off). Strength wise, the 8.25 and D44 are just about equal.

I didn't know they'd gone C-clipless. I wonder how they did that. XJ and Dakota/Durango 8.25s definitely have C-clips.

They didn't. KJs have C-Clips. All 8.25s have C-Clips. I don't know about the over all housing size, but the 8.25 has less ground clearance than a 44, mainly due to the bottom lip (some of which can be alleviated by shaving some of the bottom off)  The only advantage that using one off of a KJ would be the disc brakes already on it. You can do a disc brake swap onto an XJs 8.25 either by using the parts from a KJ or a ZJ. 4.10 gears come standard in 4 cylinder XJs.
