Its finally back in the shop!
All this FABRICATION talk has me SUPER Inspired!
But Im still on the fence about the whole set-up, Hence the fact that I really havent sunk any money into this project beyond the initial investment.
I currently have:
- 1.5"Tig Welded Chomoly Single Seat Chassis, Three Link Front and Rear, Rear Engine... Designed for Rear Steer (with many parts from its original build... Skins, pedals, transmission lines, radiator, drive shafts, links, cutting brake levers
- 2006 Supercharged ECOTEC Motor (with few acc.)$900.00 as is)
- Sloans Built Powerglide Trans... (BRACKET DELUXE
1.80 / 1.69 GEAR SET, HI FLOW PUMP, ROLLERIZED HI GEAR DRUM 6 HI & 5 REV CLUTCH PACK, DUAL RING SERVO , BRACKET BRAKE, AFTERMARKET HI HUB, HP RACE BAND HARDENED INPUT SHAFT, DEEP PAN, UNIVERSAL SHIFTING ARM, OEM CASE, NEW DIPSTICK, NEW SHEILD
$1745.00)
Im Currently Lacking:
- ECM
- Engine to Transmission Adapter $800.00 (Hughes Performance)
- any engine accessories (Starter, Alternator, Plug Wires, Etc.) (HELLO NU_WAY)
- Axles
- T-case
The Plan from the start was to rebuild a proven rock crawler design and while doing so make changes to allow for some KOH style races as well.
First item of business is a larger fuel cell.
Then Coilovers in lieu of Air Shocks
Fabricated 9" housings were selected for the custom flipped axles that would need to be built from scratch. the only thing I have is 2-sets of 5:38, 9" Ring and Pinions.
Here it was when it was first built...

Like I said Im on the fence...
I am currently discussing selling the entire project back to the guy I purchased it from.
But that could fail miserably... :-\
I think im leaning towards pulling the trigger and moving forward with this BUGGY!
My only issue now is my FREE TIME.
Its in the shop now. I have been slowly cleaning up any surface rust and re-tapping bolt holes.
I want to make some changes / improvements to the chassis before I start pre-assembly.
- New Shock Mounts (ProFender Coilovers)
- Some Crash Damage needs repair / replacement
- make room for larger fuel cell
-
My first question is to Arie...
Can I obtain a parts list from NU-Way with all part numbers and specs I will need for the Motor Accessories. 2006 Cobalt SS ECOTEC 2.0
-
In my opinion, you should start with a buggy that you can race at KOH if that is your goal.
The small buggy has no room for storage, or a co-driver.
The money that needs to go into the build could be better spent on something that you can continue to improve upon and use the way that I think you want to.
This is a great looking buggy and is perfect for cone dodging, Racing on the other hand, its too small.
-
forget the CO Driver part... >:(
Im a Motorcycle racer from way back... Co-drivers were only for side-cars (and even then they were called the "Monkeys"
But I agree 100%
And that is exactly why I havent made anymore progress than i have to date.
Im the kinda guy who acts and reacts mostly by my gut feeling. and this buggy just didnt feel right.
but my current dilemma is that i want to be running something for this upcoming season.
-
Plenty of time.
-
Bahhh! Need it done now. Need time to test buggy ! Need time to test pit strategy!

-
testing? strategy? nahhh
-
just read this thread..
Erik.. I can get any part... try me
-
as long as it's not Nissan! ;D
-
well they need to be available to get..
I didnt say I couldnt get the beeper parts.. you just dont want to pay what I would have to charge you for them
-
its not the issue of getting the parts.
Im just on the fence.
And being buried with work everyday lately doesnt give me any time to just jump into this project.
I always figured i could build it, run it for a season, and then it would be more marketable if i felt it wasnt right for me.
Prob harder to sell a bunch of parts in a box. (unless your BIGZJ) :-X
-
find a couple pics of a chassis and get a motor. M4wd can do it..... :)
-
If you don't need to shoot for KOH you don't need to build so stout anymore..
Just to give everybody an early heads up. The race courses will be like the last two we had this year. It will be able to be run with 35's and to be finished. We will run shorter laps in the 5-7 mile area with 4-5 laps. There may be one longer one thrown in but will still be at the same level. We want to allow other type vehicle to be able to finish a race. As of right now no classes but we are talking about it.
-
that is so lame. lets dumb down the east coast so we never make it to KOH....
-
hate to say it but you Ultra4 guys should be raising hell to get classes at RC so they can dumb down part of the course for the Line Mt guys and still keep it interesting for you. Sadly RC needs the Line Mt guys for the $$.
-
i do not want classes.
Ultra 4 to me is one style rig, the ultimate 4 wheeled rig to get it done- if you cant do it with your rig move aside.
with that said, making shorter, easier courses is not only dumbing down the east coast field, but in my eyes a safety issue with the current tech rules.
if we are flying up on street jeeps on 33's and 35's someone is going to get hurt. I hope they at least make them run blue lights.
-
then it sounds like they are abandoning Ultra4 racing and moving to LineMt racing.
-
have to remember rausch is a business, and they will be scraping very hard in the next 1-3 years because of AAOP moving in....
ill still bring my dollars to both regardless...
-
then it sounds like they are abandoning Ultra4 racing and moving to LineMt racing.
I agree
More appealing to the average JOE with a jeep or a beat up Wheeler.
Classes would solve alot in regards to podiums and purses, but like smike said... what about an ultra 4 car running 70+ mph closing in on a Trail Rig CJ doing 30 mph MAX. Blu light or not... its just not safe for anyone invloved.

Erik I have footage of that crawler back in 2005-2006 at a Paragon NUEROC event. Did pretty well back in the day!
