looks just fine... what wrong with it?
-
just needs the usual CJ love to get her road worthy
not sure plans after that-
-
Hope the frame is as good as the tin. Tough call from the top side with a 'glass tub. Is that where it's been for 20yr?
-
says runs mostly, stops and goes mostly haha
-
well I just created my own inventory of jeep parts.... ;D

-
its not that bad really- way better than my 5 was except the boxed frame rot
its a cool little jeep. drove around the lot and to the pizza place saturday.
warm start its cranky when i went to pull into the shop tonight after matt and i were done. I think the choke tube is disconnected.
-
I can't wait to see it running like it should! I'm told that I am the 3rd owner of the CJ5. The previous owner had it for a year, but never did anything with it. I'm told that the first owner had it sitting in a barn for the last 20 years. It was moved after the roof started falling in, but not before a block of ice fell through and landed on the hood/windshield.

rebuild / drilled to ruff stuff bushings, shackle mounts ready for new steel on frame
ebrake cables assed, rears removed, front free.
plan to pull the tank, and start on steel work for rear of frame and forward spring mounts.
nice that exhaust, Drive shafts, and tank had to come out anyway. should be rolling back in 2 days, then do under hood work, then finish with seats and some electrical bits.

Me next me next!!!! Lol

did this jeep live in a salt mine?
not by far- its still present. i have seen 80's and 90;s and 00's frames in worse shape.... but this is no ians CA frame for sure.
i decided on repair sections in 4 places to take care of everything. the outer frame rail is good, the inner is thin, driver side being worse. rot was found further up the rail than i expected once the cross member was pulled to do the fluids/trans mount/ and easy shaft axis.
should be all fixed tonight, then on to the rest of the list!

I hope we are still talking about a fixer upper and not a tearer downer.
-
Day 5 on the lift
frame all fixed up with new steel in 4 places. looks good. ready to remount rear spring shackle mounts. doing good on time estimate.

Did you actually cut out the rotten pieces all together? Or generally just grind off the rust and weld on a new piece overtop?
-
i ground until i found good steel to weld to, removed the big pieces that were rotten.
-
cutting sections out of 2x3 box for the patches worked great.
-

Groovy, was genuinely curious.
-
would have been way to labor intensive to pull the tub, strip, blast and coat inside and out with POR which would be really the next step of repair.
-
Day 6
New battery cables
battery hold down replaced
Cap/ rotor / wires/ plugs installed
removed smog pump
New radiator / hoses / clamps / installed and filled
New seats mounted

-
love an old 258...
-
had to masagge the grill a little for the new radiator to fit. mount points to fins was 1/2" difference in the wrong way, which the fan contacted fins. found a sweet solution to missing / stripped nut certs with through bolts, accessed though the marker light holes :)
belt is so close, but need a little longer. new hoses got massaged and cut to fit.
looking good under the hood!

dont you wish you can dip the whole jeep in black paint..
-
Ha! I really do wish that. After the new wheels/tires are on, I plan on getting the Jeep painted. At least it will look presentable with the hood closed.
-
Shocks and exhaust done. Rear tail light connector fell apart while removing rotted plate mount LOL
-
Maybe it did live in a salt mine.
-
brake system seemed fine but i noticed the MC was half empty- filled with new fluid, and now it leaks out the back lol
need to investigate.
-
new tail light lenses and plate mount ebayed
-
Cold air induction duct, new wiper arms, wiper pivot covers, and some other misc parts arriving mid week. Tires are supposed to ship out on the 8th. Hopefully will be to Jared mid week too.
-

New tail lights mounted we got off a TJ at the yard saturday, new ebay lenses
New plate mount installed
switch knobs installed
petal pads installed
Heater blower motor hooked up and working
new brake master installed tuned into a cluster of every brake line i touched crumbled, so she a few brake lines and new hardware. PITA but got everything bled and holding fluid good.
was looking though inspection items, and i think you will need a rear view mirror thats missing from the windsheild. hmmmm.
-

I would rather that they crumble now then when driving down the road. Didn't I hear you say "no job is too big, no fee is too big"?? :)
I will get a rearview mirror. Any update on the seat placement?
-
going to be 70 tomorrow! did you get plates and a 10 day for this guy yet! i think a test drive is needed.
-
Yes and yes. I should have probably waited on getting the registration because the 10 day expired. Will bring over this evening.
-
My 10 day from Incomplete is shot too.
Scotty's is a ways from you. You friendly with that shop at your work driveway yet?
-
not friendly, but matt had good luck with the dodge and yj. Apparently flashing your delphi badge helps.
bring the wiper arms over too Tod if you have them.
Ill be in the shop at 6. Have to deliver a motor in Greece after work.
-
Sounds good. I have the original wiper arms that I can bring.
-
backordered wheels! bah!
need one more night and Tod is going to grab for now.
To do list:
swap copper line to oil gage
drill two holes in driver seat to bolt down without slider
weld in two additional nutserts for belts to make lap belts 6" longer. (fat guys like me barely fit)
-
Mike, do you think the wheels on the Jeep now could be cleaned up and painted (or powder coated) black? Finding new wheels is proving to be an impossible mission.
-
I think the wheels could be painted or powdercoated- and you probably could get new center caps, or just leave them off.
what size are you trying to get again?
summit has these and they would ship today: and a bunch other
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/crr-3975755/overview/
-
I just ordered those a few min before your post came through. Through this process, I've found that Summit isn't accurate with status of some of the wheels. I had to call them to verify that they actually had stock. I had tried to do the same with Quadratec, but found them to be less than helpful. I had asked what they had in stock for a 15x7, black, steel wheels with a 5x5.5 bolt pattern...they told me that if I need to give specific part numbers for them to check. What a pain.
Those wheels from Summit are supposed to ship this evening from OH and go direct to Jared.
-
summit is great- type in "wheel" in the search- then on the left side, you can narrow your search by width, bolt pattern, back space, color, price
i found 7-10 wheels in the 60$ range that would work for you in "black"
the status is usually pretty good.
-
wiper arms / wipers installed
intake air hose installed
driver seat holes drilled and mounted 1" lower
hows the wheels looking? or do you want it this week? i think im done as far as i can go. Ill get the paper work / bill together.
should pass inspection minus tires, possibly a rear view mirror (has 2/3 so should pass)
-
Wheels/tires will be delivered this week to you Mike. I'll let you know before we head up.
-
I have the review mirror and can drop that off this evening. Other than that, I think we are done??
-
i think so! i did a final light check and let the cooling system warm up again last night. Looks good. I can give you the 3 second tour of the 4 screws on the side of the carb you might find your self monkeying with from winter / summer driving.
Hopefully Wednesday it will be nice for a good test drive to make sure all is good at speed!
i wont be in the shop tonight, but you can drop it in the ford, or wait till tomorrow.
If the wheels are good, we will get a sticker on it and all should be good!
-
I would appreciate the demo on the carb.
Wednesday is supposed to be sunny and 70+...could be a great night for a test drive.
-
What time are you out of work tomorrow Mike? I could ditch out early to drop these tires to you.
(I'll use it as an excuse to actually make a meeting for a change)
-
i will probably be out around 5:30 and could stop at the shop
-
let me know what time today for tires, i left my phone at home >:(
i should be there at 5. tons of meetings today but might be able to shoot out for a little bit.
-
I need to get some stuff in Rochester myself anyway so I'll run them up end of day. Probably be there just after 5
-
cool
-
M4wd is abandoned! Where is everyone? Lol
-
sorry, leaving my desk in 5 min, ill be there in 10
shit hit fan at real job
-
Me yesterday, you today. Stupid real jobs.
-
damn straight.
all week.
and probably all summer. and fall. and winter. late spring is looking decent?
-
Yea. Damn jobs.
-
hahaha... ;)
-
Mike, will you be around Fri to settle up?
-
Taking to get inspected tomorrow afternoon, I should be at the shop till about 5. We are graded south to race this weekend.
-
The three tone color scheme will be gone soon...

tip...
take the tires of...
no matter how careful you are there is always something that gets on them...
glass and headlights out... makes a HUGE difference even if you mask them well
Take as much sheet metal off as you can and get all the way around...
PREP WORK!!! its 90% of how paint comes out
-
Thanks for the tips. I am having the guys who paint the airplanes at the Canandaigua airport do this as a side project. I will talk with them further about their process.
-
Alu and Steel need to be prepped differently..
I learned that the hard way with the rover...
ask them if they are intereted in other "side" work...
I always have stuff...
-
awesome progress!
-
One more week and it should be done...Bumpers, fuel tank cover, etc need to be painted black. Hard to believe the tranformation.
