Get that rear welded up. I don’t understand leaving a rear limited on a trail toy.
I guess I did it briefly myself too but I really don’t get even where I was coming from when I did it myself. I guess fear of turning radius impact? Not worth it!
-
let me know if you want to bring it over sometime and put it on the lift and give it a once over sanity check before next season. looks cool for a turn key fun machine!
-
That would be great. Thanks

After some creative suck downing of the suspension. Got it to just squeeze into the garage. Did a quick rip around my yard with the kids. Is that steering ram single sheer?
-
Sure is, that’s sketch.
-
Yeah may need a new ram in the future

Should be able to swap ends, as long as they’ll loosen.
-
Or convert tie rods to clevis end
-
looks like the eyes on the ram are fixed, no spherical bearing. so no clevis end tie rod without changing ram end anyway.

why tighten all the way when you can have a split ring lock washer keep a bit of preload, anyway?
-
I didn't build it!
-
I know! It'll be a good while before you should take it personally when I talk shit about it ;)
I hope you're as excited about it as I think you might be. and I hope it's as good as it could be!!
-
It's an ugly dog I might just love to hate. Mike I know why it looks the way it does. Kid grew up on a farm. I'm sure his dad or grandad helped. With only farm knowledge to go by. Oh and the wiring is a disaster. Need to fix a few things there too.
First is to get it so I can move left to right in my tiny garage. Then fix the oil leak.
Then the steering wheel issue
Oh and it clicks while rolling under power to the left
-
So front ujoint, most likely

Replaced the filter housing today. For this 93 year 4.0 motor, the housing bolt is a 9/16 allen . I do not own a allen key t that large so I made one. After getting it free found all orings on the bolt and the large housing were hard. Replaced all and reinstalled. Drained the oil and it was jet black. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191213/eefd0d68e06a1b03bfef05fc3e045b69.jpg)
-
Added fluids and when I started it up it is now leaking from another spot. The oil pressure switch is leaking. Replaced after a trip to penfeild AutoZone as they were the only ones to have it and no more leak.
-
Found my clicking noise while driving around the yard yesterday, when turning left tire lugs are just catching the lower control arm. Side note they don't touch when turning right.
-
A piece of aluminum 5'x10' showed up to my door this morning. 1/8 thick.
-
nice!
-
Roof and skins?
-
At least a roof , maybe if enough will redo the hood.

In case anyone needs cardboard for templates. It's maybe a little thicker than a cereal box.
-
the drive shafts on this unit really need to win a prize! i love it!
solid unit just needs some tweaks!
-
I can't walt to duplicate them
-
and i was just thinking, you probably only need one spare that will fit front and rear, if everything is all 1350 like i think you said.
-
Looking a little different

rear shocks re mounted.
-
Hey they are even now.
-
a center limit strap of 14" is what you need for the rear.
cheap route, double these up with a single tab on each end between: https://www.amazon.com/Double-Limiting-Strap-Pair-Buggy/dp/B00FB82ADG/ref=asc_df_B00FB82ADG/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=316620274234&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14717912756253367232&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005637&hvtargid=pla-621252195292&psc=1
or what id rather is is just one of these- best and strongest limt strap i have seen: https://www.amazon.com/Rock-AssaultTM-6-Ply-Limit-Strap/dp/B009WB7ILM/ref=pd_sbs_263_2/143-0657463-5526306?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B009WB7ILM&pd_rd_r=3510392a-23e2-464c-97ee-4838c9b345f5&pd_rd_w=L1QWq&pd_rd_wg=D1bOe&pf_rd_p=7cd8f929-4345-4bf2-a554-7d7588b3dd5f&pf_rd_r=2M4MVYHN7C2595YRWYP4&psc=1&refRID=2M4MVYHN7C2595YRWYP4
if single strap, get a pair of these to mount.
https://www.amazon.com/Limit-Strap-Race-Harness-Tabs/dp/B07Z4738QH/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=double+shear+mounting+tabs&qid=1583496954&s=automotive&sr=1-3
either should be fine for this thing

i asked matt if he has any short ones left from the front of his buggy before we changed it up. he is checking

I texted him too

Picked this back up from M4WD on Wednesday. After sitting in the garage over night , this afternoon I went to start on my roof template and saw the buggy leaning hard to the right. The rear right Air shock is now fully stuffed. With no nitrogen left in it. Mike I know you mentioned it leaked. Do you think it just needs a new shrader valve? And will any do or do I need to call ADS about it?
-
a normal sharder from a high pressure valve stem should be fine
-
Worked on the winch(smittybilt xrc8)this past weekend. Replaced the clutch lever hoping it would fix the issue of it unlocking under load. While it has a more positive feel with a good detent it still fails. There is a pin that holds the lever in the cover if removed I can over rotate past the detent and it locks and engages under load. With out the pin the lever will pull out. When I placed a call to smittybilt they informed me that the winch is discontinued and no longer able to get parts.
This thing definitely lives up to is acronym

Sell a kid? Or a kid-ney? :P
-
I have sanitizer and toilet paper!
-
So it's popped before and the edges of the teeth on the dogs are rounded off. If you're lucky maybe you can tear the winch apart and turn them 180Ëš to use fresh material?
-
4 seater family machine? i dont know id probably just splurge for a new 250$ winch. i remember when matt wound his rope backwards and a screaming woman squealing down the back side of double bump occurred as the winch unwound with no brake haha
-
Put winch from tj on this thing and traded steel cable for the rope from bad winch. Will find a steel pin to make a removable free spool locm and use old unit and mount to trailer.

I love that the square driveshaft still has the hole in it for a receiver.
I rocked the squares for years. I believe my old buggy is still running them.
-
Yeah I have to source some 1310 yokes so I can make a spare to have on the trailer.
-
Tom, If you don't find any 1310 stuff around let me know what you need, cv/non cv/whatever. I have a pile of that stuff upstairs in my shop..
-
i think the drive shaft from the 54 chevy i cut up has 4 of them in good shape also. they might be 1350 though
-
I'm going strikeout my last statement about needing 1310 Yoke's until I measure because I just read where I originally posted it needed 1410 on transfer case output.
-
Pretty sure I still have square driveshafts around smile gave me years ago, don't remember what size yokes where on them
-
if i gave you shafts they would have been from my CJ that was 75% 1310 and maybe 1350 at the rear axle. if i gave you parts to build they were probably all 1350 junk.
-
Started to shape the aluminum sheet to be a roof. Need to trim and add more tabs. -
Drive shaft is 1410 yokes. So need to find what those are from.
-
one ton chevy rear truck / cab chassis 90's 2000's
-
you will want to grab two of the transfer case side slip yoke ones that are easier to put 4 flats on and stick into square. The yokes from the actual shaft parts will be for like 3-4" tube and annoying to make adapt to 2.5" and 2" square.
like this kind

Just a copy and paste from Facebook.
Sad 2 days of testing the Buggy. Friday found the new shifter doesn't work right... but found it was my mistake and just inverted my two color choices as both are a shade of blue. Started to feel a little better when it shifted correctly. My friend Dennis had some fuel delivery issues we got sorted out then after lunch we found some other friends ( Joe Bailey) had joined or camping area. I insisted that he and his wife ride with me instead of paying for a full day for an hour of wheeling and after starting to crawl some good sized rocks the buggy just shut off. After some fiddling found that it was blowing a 30 amp fuse and would not run. Got dragged back to camp. Found more wheelers waiting Cory. Ran to parts store, got a part that a lot of forum chatter claimed to be issue but to no avail. Went to bed woke up to a monsoon . Started tracing wires when a Master Tech from our club offered his advice to unplug the o2 sensor. And wouldnt you know it, starts right up after jumping the battery that no longer holds a charge.
Time to wheel. Buggy died once more from battery issue. Leave it run is the consensus so I wheel some more only to have my driver front tire try to walk under my lower link and snap my driver side shafts and the 1350 ujoint.
-
so shifter is fixed and good?
any idea what blew the 30a? related to the O2?
Curious what the full story is on the link and damage there. limit straps fix that, or design change needed?
-
how was the new roof?
-
Roof was mint! According to Dennis Langston probably a failed heater in the o2 sensor. Steering problem is when turning left it turns so far that the tire hits the lower link. Never thought it would catch and pull under it. Either needs the ram adjusted or to have steering stops put in.
-
steering stops should match the travel limits of the ram to keep things from fighting and causing later issues.
-
While swaping in the drivers side shaft. I took apart the warn locking hub and it has what I would call a wave spring that is now in 3 pieces. Does anyone know if it's normally in 3 or is it supposed to be in one piece. Could not find info or a good picture of a locking hub taken apart. They all look like a cartridge of gears that slide in to the unit bearing.
-
I'd bet it is suppose to be one piece.
Look at the Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/WARN-95060-Premium-Locking-Black/dp/B00Q0EK92O/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=warn+95060&qid=1603034964&sr=8-2) listing. The first image can be zoomed to see a bit clearer.
-
Broke apart factory hub off donor axle stole the spring and is all back together to wheel. Just need to remember to not fully turn left, so tire doesn't bind against the lower link
-
This sweet unit drank all the coolant out on Friday and burned all the oil out on sat. Then wouldn't start and stay running for more than a few min.
Charged up the batter I killed winching onto the trailer and it won't power anything up. Checked has power feeding disconnect but no power on other side. Wiggled all sorts of harness and wires to no avail. For giggles called my dad and asked if a bad ground could cause issue as the winch works ok after charging battery. Hooked jumper cable from negative battery terminal to the frame and now starts right up. Exploring options to buy a motor and trans but may just use some blue devil products to try and save the 4.0 a little longer.
-
its always the ground!
-
sounds like you need to go to the yard and pull a 4.0 harness / PCM.
remove all wire from the buggy. all of it. get new ignition and disconnect switches and the heave gage wire.
start over and keep it simple.
-
Is the 4.0 in it even worth saving? When it was running it sounded like awful. Maybe drop the oil pan and see how much metal is inside it.
-
it sounded fine when it was happy- probably use some lucas or some valve seals. was smoking a bit but we had the O2 unplugged also.
my old boss has a GMC 2500 with a 40k 6.0 in she drove from her dads but then it sad and as brake line issues now, she wants it off her lawn. truck is pretty NY'd out but said runs great. ill find out info on it.
-
So after some light wheeling at Attica. Found front driver wheel to look like this. After some searching found the same wheel centers at Rouge fab and there are supposed to be tabs that reinforce the center in all those slots.
-
boo for that guy leaving those out
