kitchen window boxes started with
celery, collards, beans, butter crunch lettuce
seed trays prepped for about 20 others to start that this week.
going to increase fenced garden area this year from 25x50 to 25x100 so the deer dont get my corn! have 300 sweet corn seeds that i plan to do in 2 week increments.
have two 300' rolls of weed fabric to try this year also
plan to pick up a 5' pto tiller and a rake from runnings this week.
more fence and posts from TSC.
-
the girls at Runnings Brockport are cute
picked up a 60" tiller and a 96" rake today
more fence and posts, fertilizer and some muck boots that were on sale also.
-
2nd till today after i picked out a tractor bucket full of soft ball size rocks from my plot.
looking good. probably ready to plant soon. wild onions a foot tall in some places already in the field.
-
I know it's early in the season, but after seeing Wegmans price on corn I cleaned up an area of my yard and planted 4-10' rows of sweet corn and hopefully in another 10 weeks I'll start seeing some eggs from my chickens.
-
i planted four 100' rows of corn (300 seeds)

stilll no sprouts yet, my package says 7-10 days and 70 days to full mature, got the chix coop built and nestled into my landscape
-
noice!
my new sprinkler timer is sweet. let it run and make it grow!
-
lots of beans from kitchen window boxes- curious if the 2' tall zucchini plants are going to make stuff also
about half the stuff in the big garden perking up that were transplants and 4 rows of corn are all about 1-2" tall sprouts now!
-
Some things turning green in Sarah’s beds. Tried a couple upside down tomatoes and they are looking sad to be upside down.
-
sprinkler timer still working mint
300 corn plants about 6-8" tall
have some pretty good squash and zukinni plants going.
pumpkins, radishes, lettuce bed coming along and some others.
pretty soon time to get on the weeds they are comming!
-
I think we are overwatering. So much mud over there. Plants are looking good though.
-
We have so much lettuce already I don't know what to do with it. Peppers, sweet potatoes, carrots, strawberries, rasberrys doing well so far. Not seeing any action from edamame or green beans.
-
no action at all on our berries, I don't think they were interested :(
I need to split up the potatoes I threw in a bucket before it's too late, they're going gangbusters! (I have no idea what to do with a potato or how they grow. I just threw whole sprouting ones from a bag that sprouted in to see what they'd do. Impressively hearty looking dark dark greenness!)
-
just stick them in the ground
-
that's my entire gardening plan. if it's more complex I'm not really into it haha
-
haha
-
80% weeded out my 100' squash row. its looking good. i had some super strong transplants that were in solo cups, some regular seedling tray transplants and then some new seeds planted when everything got transfered outside. have first sightings of baby 2" ones on many zukkini and sumer squash plants!
some of the beets or radishish (i forget are starting to bush up on top side, hopefully there are things going on underground too.
lettace its patchy, i guess i need to dump way more seeds next time. or clean it out now and add more.
corn still going but is pretty weedy
-
found 3 different patches of rasberries on my property each at least 20x20' in size. looks like the deer know where they are and have been munching on them as they ripen.
might be time to transplant some inside fence!
-
replumbed in pex my sprinklers today
saw deer, baby deer, wood chuck, and bunny all today. might have to inspect lower level of fence to ensure determent!
-
you're going to need 10' of fence to keep deer out
-
you're going to need 10' of fence to keep deer out
or motion detected water sprinklers in strategic locations
-
i think the deer are happy with whats in the rest of the field for now, no sign last year or this year yet inside the 5' fence
-
first squash today
-
wow
we have had some beets and celery and spinach so far. tomatoes are starting to come in.
-
i have beets and radish, im not sure how you tell when to pick them. on of my radish look like a baseball half out of the ground!
-
I think as long as they are shaped and colored right they’re okay. Just a matter of getting bigger if left to grow.
-
just spotted what is digging in my little garage. 50yrd shot missed him from upstairs window about 3" with the bow. had a good chance since shot was only about 10' different from my normal practice but with no practice lol. confirmed big old woodchuck and has to have a massive den built there because there is only 2 holes in the garage gravel floor, i watched him run right back into the garage.
-
something ate ALL my corn plants in the last 2 days. All 300 gone in the 4 rows, cleaned me out! bah!
-
Damn! Need to put in a trail cam there to help you figure out what/when that is happening.
-
im thinking a bunny family has found they can fit through the 2x4" fence. i guess next year i need to get a roll of 1" for the bottom 2'
-
bunnies? how tall were your corn?
around here corn is about 4-6+ feet now
-
Gotta be deer, think you underestimated how high they can jump. My corn still look to be a couple weeks from ready, not one of the peaches and cream corn took. Wegmans corn has been straight trash, didn't check them at the store and over an inch was still seeds. 2 of my chickens have started laying,up to a dozen over the last week
-
watched the deer several times walk around the fence and be confused/scared by it. also, there would be tons of hoof prints in the moist ground. i dont think they have been in there. Deer also just love the sweet corn leaves which they ate last year in when it wasn't fenced in. this time something cheewed at the base to tower over all the plants, then ate the ears, left the leaves.
corn was only 2-3' tall and just starting to make ears about the size of a roll of pennies
-
Interesting, Google says raccoons or possibly possums eat it like that
-
i guess a raccon could climb the fence, but dont think they could get through the 2x4" fenc holes, thats why i assumed it was bunnies, which i have seen around the property.
i got a bunch of butternut squash getting big and if they touch those before i harvest its war!
-
You can borrow my dog ,he just caught one of the rabbits around my yard last week, heard it squeal just before he snapped it's neck, he's so God dam fast
-
MCWA sent me a nice note asking me to double check i dont have any water leaks on my property, as my water usage of 19000 gallons for this quarter was about 5 times that of last years usage
haha nice
no thats me just spraying 90$ in water into the dirt this summer
-
Lol, if we were in Cali you'd be going to jail for using that much water. You jinxed me, 2 days after something ate your corn mine got wiped out. Up to 4 eggs a day now, I can't keep up, already given away like 3 dozen
-
you're going to be investigated for growing pot in the barn soon lol
-
how were your results this year?
We ended up wasting the second half of the cucumber harvest. pickles from the first half are edible now but haven't cracked a jar. did get into the beets and they were great. carrots were similartly overwhelming. planted WAY too much celery and only used a bit of it. Lots of learning in year one.
-
zukini and squash did well.
bunnies pretty much ate my beets and all the corn
lettace was a complete waste and tastes like dirt no matter how much you wash.
sprinklers and increased fence was really my progress this year.
I plan in next few weeks to bush hog, rake, till, and cover with plastic and tires for the winter this time to try and reduce weeds for next year
-
We had tons of sweet peppers, cherry tomatoes and probably 50 lbs of sweet potatoes. Not much else did well. Strawberry harvest was very poor, lettuce was garbage as well.
-
fresh potting soil in two window baskets and green onions, radishes planted. i have one radish or beet that is like over a foot tall that i have kept planted over the winter for fun and its still going strong. no idea whats under the soil but its looking great.
-
having my last squash as part of dinner tonight. pretty cool its sat on my counter since the fall, and tastes great just as they did when fresh picked. ill have to keep more of them this year from next winter.
-
Thats awesome.
Couple jars of pickled beets left here and a bunch of pickles.
-
seedlings getting big inside!
