I think it would be extremely easy to break into that market. If you talk to restaurant around here they are annoyed with the companies here. It's easy to take business from companies when people are not happy with them. I would not do it just for the fact I don't want to draw attention to what we do and just want to be left alone and keep running this stuff as fuel for personal use

No way I'd want to go into business selling the stuff, mainly for this reason, but I also can't imagine what it would require to be even a tiny bit "legit" about it. I'm sure any other combustible oil will fade out the same way WVO has, but the longer I can quietly do it in my area the better!

I always have a wanted ad posted on CL saying I'll take any kind of oil. Got a few big scores that way in December that we still have about 150 gal left of, but I haven't gotten any calls in months. I've been looking, no one is giving it away and there are probably 5 other WMO wanted ads in my area, some offering to pay as high as $.50-1/gal!!! Hoping that fades away once it's warm and people aren't using it for heating.

Need to start pursuing other bulk sources though... two 12 valves and a Mercedes is chewing through it pretty fast. I am looking into getting mineral oil from transformer repair/decomissioning places.

Edit: not that I'm that concerned, but is this part of the forum visible to non-members? (ie Google searchers and whatnot)

I've read the PCB thing is not true, outlawed in 1976... it would be something I'd discuss with the supplier before taking any.

What would it be contaminated with? I read about people scoring 500 gallons at a time, does kind of seem to good to be true haha

Outlawed from being used, doesn't mean it got changed... A good oil filled will last 50 years no problem.  That's really the only reason you would drain it is if it has PCB's or has failed.  If its failed its most likely because the oil got contaminated.  Water, metals, sulfur, chlorine, all kinds of gases produced from arcing and corona in oil.

500 gal would be a typical large transformer so that would make scene.  There's a chance of someone replacing one before it fails but no one around here would dare do anything like that lol.  So I suppose if your in the right place at the right time...  They're required to test it before removal, so there should be a full blown analysis on it.  Its a toxic substance so I'm sure a sketchy electrical dude would love to give it away lol.

What it all means to running it in your truck I have no idea  ;D

Burning chlorine and PCBs does not sound like a good way to save money on fuel haha

I wondered about lifespan, the one local place I'm trying to contact is called "Northeast Transformer Decommissioning" and they don't have a website. Perhaps I should be a bit leary

Its serious stuff.  We've been doing a job for Carrier in Syracuse (old GE transformer plant) for several years now.  It is so contaminated the DEC made them knock an entire massive building down and cover it in 2' of asphalt to try and stop if from spreading.  They have hundreds of wells pumping all the ground water back to a skimmer.
