Found this gem in Nebraska. I think I'm in love. Or just stupid.
1948 Chevrolet Loadmaster, 16000 lbs, 235 ci, 3 spd trans, 2 spd rear
Steel is unbelievably 100% (who'da thunk in NE?). Everything else, not-so-much. Been sitting for ~30 years. Needs some things. Well, everything.
Plan is to return in the spring and retrieve.

Sweet crawler hauler for short trips?

LOVE IT.
Want one like that, or an F3, or best, a Diamond T.
Fell in love with this earlier today

Sweet crawler hauler for short trips?
That's part of the plan. Hauler and tow pig.
Haven't decided on the method of execution yet. Not sure how much "character" I want to leave in place and revive. Sheet metal remains as-is. The rest is up for discussion.

Find a rolled over late-model. Body swap. Lots of dynomat. Resto-mod all the way.

6.2GM? Fucking barf. What a waste of a restoration!
-
A 6.2 LS is in the running if I'm keeping the chassis. 8)

we have a 2018 out back that sounds sweeet. monster Allison bolted to it, deadheaded for load :)

Perfect! When can I pick it up? ;D

im sure it will be at Metalico in a month or so with a hole punched in the side of the block

Boo. What a waste. :'(

I vote Duramax

Talked to Chad about that unit - it's actually a runner as it sits! In addition to being completely complete.
Too cool.

Mark all the cool kids own old iron, it's a maturity thing. Very cool truck.
-
if owning old iron is cool consider me miles davis
-
Arie's got us all beat for sure!

Here is one my dad cleaned up for a mate. A few years on his mate got it done up again and passed it back to me.
I was on the hunt for a new Diff when I saw this thread on Google, so I thought I'd share.
Also, we had problems getting a new VIN for the truck as it may be known as a "1947 Maple Leaf chevy" something you might like to know.

Mark..
I have a Sprinter drivetrain... now that would be awesome!!!!
actually have 2 at the moment
-
that'd be sweet! I don't know if they have the balls to tow, though - and that truck deserves to be able to tow.
If you want to make delivery complicated, I could meet him in Indianapolis and bring it back here. I'll be there Sunday 7/5, probably evening. Could go a bit further west, I'll be taking Monday off for my return trip
-
Thanks for the offer but he should be OK. That's my new trailer too (purchased just for this delivery). The whole shootin' match should be arriving early next week.

silly 5 lugs!

Not holding on to the trailer long. Don't worry.

What were your plans with it?

No patina change. The drivetrain is still undecided.

want a E250 van drivetrain

Sacrilege! Ford in a Chevy?!
Guess it isn't any different than Cummins in a Chevy.

-
cummins and big by trans
wiring for anything other than a 12v sounds like work.
-
:-[
;D
-
big hood. 8.3 Cummins.
I think I've been reading that 5 ton trucks are the sweet source for 8.3s these days.
-
M35 drivetrain..multifuel run on urine
-
What is the purpose of this vehicle?
Seems a TBI 350 would be 4x the power it had when new, 700r4 would keep the RPM down as well. . Cheap and plentiful, plenty of enough for short trips, Driving 5 hours in that looks to be a painful experience.
Cummins motors are expensive and transmissions are big and heavy, seems like a cool but poor choice for this if its just a short trip thing.
-
That's what it all boils down to: purpose. Nailed it.
If short trip thing, rebuild what is there and run it. Cool.
If more, then different chassis so I can get modern drivetrain and 4x4.
It is not going to be comfortable on long-distance trips. Noisy, leaky, brutal. Too much coin/work to make it cozy.
-
Jeff Hall used a suburban chassis and drive train for his truck build. I wonder how similar the wheel base is?

splash oil lubrication is the way to go!
is there oil holes anywhere on the top for start up?
-
Got plugs, wires, points, condenser, cap, rotor, and battery from Arie.
Hooked up battery. Heater fan spun. Fuel gauge clicked. No fire or smoke. Good.
Mashed the starter foot switch. Starter spun but motor didn't crank...
Removed starter. Motor looks decent, shaft good, starter drive likely bad...
-
Positive or negative ground?
-
Chevys had negative ground, GMCs had positive ground.
-
Could it be that the starter is spinning the wrong direction? Did you try bench testing with positive ground?
-
Bench-tested correct rotation. When in the truck, there was sound like cranking and some kind of "hitch" that it would push through. The bendix is likely dirty/rusty enough not to engage fully.

While installing new starter, observed that flywheel ring gear was not seated/spaced uniformly on the flywheel. Dag-gum (ranch vernacular) thing is spinning on the flywheel...
-
oh noes!
field fix would be to rotate assy to fully seat and give it 6-8 decent tack welds.... probably asking for a crack though
-
What do I have to lose? Likely already cracked somewhere.
-
guarantee its cracked and is a C instead of a ring now.
if this is verified, got pull it and change.... or else you will just hose the starter again even if you did get a few welds on it in the right place.
the press on those things is crazy i did my CJ what a job

sMike was right. Located the split, clamped as best I could and welded the split. Then put a 1" bead on either side of the split, 1" bead at the other four "corners". Ground tooth valley clear. Realized that part of the bendix would want to occupy the same space as the weld beads. Grabbed the grinder and trimmed the top of the beads. Installed old bendix in new starter, installed starter, applied power and crank rotated! Reinstalled spark plugs and tried cranking again; still OK. Bendix still bangs on the split space but I'll get over it until it breaks.
Installed two missing plug wires and attempted to fire; no joy. Checked spark; none. Checked coil terminal; no juice. Vetted ignition switch and it works opposite of every other switch I've had. Rechecked coil terminal; good. Replaced all plug wires and rechecked spark; good. Got my nearly empty can of ether and went to work. The rest of the can yielded a cloud of blue smoke and a couple of pops of exhaust!
Promising!

"Funny" thing happened...
While in the house Monday morning around 11a, everyone hears a loud BOOM. Sounded like a mattress being dropped flat, only x10. Looked all around and found nothing out of place in the house, garage, or shop. Quick look at the parking lot and didn't observe anything unusual. Chalked it up to the nearby quarry.
Later in the day, I needed to pull the trailer out so I could deploy the awning and let it dry out. I found this...

Thanks to Jared, this has new front sneakers!
And thanks to Arie, this thing moves under it's own power!
Drove it around the front yard a few times in low gear. It's loud and smelly and hot and uncomfortable. I love it!
-
awesome!
figure out a plan yet? or purpose? haha
-
haha
-
Went to start this morning and found flywheel ring gear separated again. Ground off my crappy welds and did a better job this time, I think. Flywheel is not steel but cast something. Hoping it holds.
Frothy, milky oil (with water) changed, replaced 1/5 quarts of 20w50 with ATF to clean up those passages and sludge. Looks good after a few more and longer yard laps.
Clutch improving with use.
-
Video! We wanna see this thing roar.
-
watery oil may have already wiped out bearings. how's the smoke? Does it have a pressure gauge?
Hell, is that even pressurised oil or is it splash lubed? haha
-
Pressure still as before although gauge is vague and broken-ish. No unusual noises heard over the loud exhaust. Hoping for the best. Still could end up with Cummins or other...
-
Wow you've made some progress since I've last seen this post.
So cool Mark. I'd say keep it as original as possible for as long as possible.
Way cooler.

Pulled it into a garage bay (under its own power!) and disassembled the rear hubs and brakes. Every single fastener came off with ease. There was still fluid in the lines! One return spring fell out broken and will need to be sourced. 3 of 4 shoes looked decent but for the sake of safety, all will get relined.
Arie sourced front and rear wheel cylinders, a master cylinder, and flex hoses. He never ceases to amaze me!
Found six nearly new recapped tires with traction tread on CL. Took them over to Jared for removal and disposal of 50 year old rotten-ness and install with new tubes. Once again, Tallmadge did a great job!
Dropped the rear brake shoes at Rochester Brake and Clutch yesterday. Hoping to have them back by end of the month.

Hen's teeth! Sheesh.

Springs arrived and driver rear reassembled. Back on all fours (or six in this case)!
Cracked open the rear pumpkin finally: 1.5" of sludge on the bottom. Scraped and shoveled and wiped out all I could reach. Dowsed with 1.5 cans of brake cleaner. No metal evidence. May try to clean more...

This thing has been neglected almost all year. Too long...
Rebuilt the carb a couple weeks ago.
Decided to address annoying exhaust issues like leaky flange and lack of muffler. Broke an exhaust stud. Pipe is swiss. Got a new "header" pipe bent and bought a new TSC tractor muffler. Ordered a flange donut and muffler strap. Drilled/tapped for new stud.
Also ordered a drag link rebuild kit.
Want to get some kind of bed built but won't be as nice as sMike's.
Goal is to put some more miles on it again before winter storage now that the weather is moderating.
