Title: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: Ryan on January 06, 2012, 02:22:20 PM
The goal for this build was to give me a buggy I can fit the kids into and race in the RcRocs series.

It all started when Smike found a 2006 6.0 Out of a Silverado and an attached 4L80E 2wd trans. He dident want it, so I went and picked it up.

Now I had a motor and no chassis. After looking around at what was available I found something I liked, but the cost was too high. So Smike said he would build me a roller.

And so it began

Motor/trans and a 22 gallon fuel cell

The stock exhaust manifolds did not work well, so I got a set of block hugger headers off Summit for around $200. They fit much better.

Axles are Chevy 14 bolt and Dana 60. Got a good deal from Josh on these babies, they were showroom fresh.   :-\

After Smike filled his lungs, and shop with rust from cleaning up the axles he did the 4-links.

We used 1.25" Ruff Stuff heims on the axle ends and bushings on the frame end. All tabs are 3/8" and braced up nice and strong. The links are made from 2" .250" square.

The front axle received an Artec truss and ram mount along with the Artec high steer arms, ARP studs, and steering links from Ruff stuff. The Artec allow you to run use the stock steering arm for a much stronger knuckle.

The Trail Gear double ended ram took needed some spacers made to get it to fit.

When the fab work was done the chassis was stripped down and taken out to the "old" shop for final welding.

Brought up the Aussie trailer and picked up my new roller.

We found out that H2 wheels do not work with the Artec steering arms. Had to loosen up the front lug nuts to get the tires away from the arms enough to roll.

Brought it home and installed the engine/trans, shocks, and bumps. And let the kids play on it.

After I got tired of looking at it and not working on it, back to Smikes it went. This time to the new shop for floors, rood and side tins.

Since I am not a good fabricator or welder, Smike also mounted the pedals and orbital mount.

Picked it up in a rain storm and took it home again.

I did not have enough tabs to mount the tins with, so I did that at home.

Then painted it.

Let Junior and Liz see how it felt.

Side tins and roof bolted in

On to the dash and electrics

It now runs. Its wired up,and all the accessories are functioning. The radiator is not hooked up yet, so I cant run it long.

The exhaust is 2.5" with a Dynomax super turbo muffler and it sounds sweet.

Still left to do are, brakes, lights, driveshafts, shifters, wheels tires, and steering hoses. I have ordered a Winters shifter for the 4L80E, waiting on that still.

The t-case shifters I may need help with, but we will see.

Driveshafts will be 1410 series u-joints and a 2-piece front.

I may just leave the gears in it and see how it goes. It all depends on $$$$$$$$$.  ;D

Its from Summit, came all wired and has long leads for starter and a 8ga for the power supply, I like it a lot. Nice switches as well.

Picked up the filter/regulator from NuWay in Farmington yesterday. Ordered some AN fittings for it today from Summit.

The little things will bleed you dry. Looks like I will be running with 4.10s and stock shafts for a little while. At least for winter testing, and maybe race 1.

That's a nice panel.  Only thing that'd make it nicer is breakers instead of fuses.

Shocks all on. Driveshafts done. Brake lines run.

Not getting brake fluid to the rear. I think stroke on the pedal is too short.

Open bleeder and let sit over night?
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: Ryan on March 03, 2012, 05:16:00 PM
There is no fluid coming out of the MC for the rear at all, There is prolly air in there and needs pressure to get it out.
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: dubt on March 03, 2012, 05:46:35 PM
Oh out the mc, you could power bleed from the caliper and force fluid up to the mc.
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: Ryan on March 03, 2012, 06:19:54 PM
I think the point has been  missed, the pedal does not push far enough into the master to create pressure for the back brakes. Even if I had fluid in the lines, it would not compress. I need to move the pushrod on the pedal to make it go into the MC more to get pressure to the rear lines.
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: dubt on March 03, 2012, 06:33:45 PM
Do you have room for that? Your kinda tall.... and yeah I missed the problem.
Title: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: Ryan on March 03, 2012, 06:37:51 PM
Just need to move the rod on the pedal arm. No extra room needed. Move it further away from the pivot point gives it more stroke.

I dident goto college, but I think thats how it works. :)

i was thinking about this hog and since your having a new shaft built for the front, and your front and rear shafts are the same, why not take the hosed slip yoke and make a square shaft to carry as a spare with two new joints, and full sets of ubolts.  you would just need the square and one more 1410 something end.  i think it would be a great idea.
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater

No new shaft needed, just a yoke end and clean up the splines.

I should get another superduty shaft and carry it as a spare.

I would but I don't want to share my sickness.

I was talking with Gif last night about the rear yoke, how was yours converted for ubolts? If it was a DIY, were the tips all brought back far enough to get clean ubolt clamping and the back sides flattened out for good flat but seating? Ubolts really shouldn't ever break that way.

Washed this hog tonight. It took a couple hours to get it mostly clean. Rausch Creek mud is nasty.

Cut off the bump stops. Tightened the T-case bolts that where falling out. Eyed up my 3 bent lower links. The right rear is massively bent. Need to flip them over.

Theere is a wheel leaking out of the backside of the bead lock. Looks like it broke a weld.

I might start taking the front end apart tomorrow. It should not be too bad to get apart. That front truss will make it interesting.

I know im not too smart but What purpose do bushings between the bolt head and steel plate serve? I would bolt it in without bushings if I could.

I plan on welding the bolts I can get to and putting a wrench or socket on The one I can't get to with a sawzall.
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater

it needs "give" both ways, otherwise it may as well be bolted in solid.

Post by: Ryan on June 06, 2012, 01:55:35 PM
The one bolt that is thru the floor on the front side you cant get a cutoff wheel or sawzall to. The other 3 are fine. No need to pull anything to get to them all. I can tighten them with a wrench from under the pile.

it needs "give" both ways, otherwise it may as well be bolted in solid.

Why would solid mounted be bad for a divorce mount t-case? There is no need for "give" on a divorced mount.

I have come to realize that all vendors are shit.

Ordered and paid for new axle shafts one week ago, sent 3 email for status, no response.  I was told they were an in stock part. Guess what, email today saying they messed up, one week after I paid for them, WTF?

5.9 zj fawkkk yeah!!!
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: KingtheZJ on August 23, 2012, 11:31:36 PM
imo, the 5.9 is the best platform to build a unibody rig.
if you want a WJ spring for the 4.7L HO. it wont disappoint.

Yea, Im looking at Limited Wj or ZJ. I would be ok with a 5.2 as well.
Title: Re: The Profender 4-seater
Post by: rejeep on August 24, 2012, 09:17:30 AM
having owned both... the 5.2 is a better motor in the long run....
the 5.9 tends to overheat at slow speeds..
had a lower tow rating from the factory because of this...
