Just walked the property lines. Its not small. There’s so much water...
I’ll need a mower on floatation tires.
May be able to make some changes to existing ditches to improve flow. The pond is a catchment from neighbors’ drainage and the low point where everything goes is atthe corner of whalen and cr30.
Flapper on the drier vent doesn’t close. There are birbs in there.
-
I think a commercial grade walk behind with hydro drive will work well and less prone to get stuck. Use it to mow all, or at least to do ditches, around trees, etc and finish the rest with the mowzer (and eventually with a compact tractor similar to Smike’s)?
My $0.02
-
Mowzer is only I think 46†and does 7mph with no suspension. It’s going to be a 5 hour affair to mow this place if I keep it all cut.
Gotta get the fences torn out sometime too. Much in the way of mowing.
-
What sort of fences?
Sent from my SM-N970U using Tapatalk
-
2hrs on my zero turn did it, plus some mozer work.
tractor ripped out about 75 horse people posts and gates. did some work!
-
they were 8' rough round pressure treated posts like 6" - 8" around. they were about 2' into the ground on average.
-
Yup, plus a hitching post and 3 gates about 10’ wide. I can’t load any of it until the fixerUPPER is running.
It’s all in the front shop lot if you want to look at it.
-
I will try to swing over tomorrow afternoon to take a look and see the rest of the place.

This is about 50% overpriced but I wonder how something like this would do on my property. 72†cut would be nice! Ability to stick the deck under trees would help along all the pines, and help cover some of the wettest spots. I’m not sure how well it might mud bog but with the ah tires turned the right way around I bet it might do ok.
I’d definitely want a test drive, but this style has appeal to me.
Started looking for compact tractors with large mud mount mowers and mostly found mower decks, and some overpriced tractors with only mowers and nothing else.

-
id cut all branches on every tree to 7'
most of the trees on the other side of the pond dike are already cut up.
looks like a pain and ya 2-3 times over priced.
-
I’m not going to get rid of the complete break between the house and road. Front break trees will stay fully branched to the ground

Ha.
Howard Price 15ft mower

5500# machine. 17 acres per hour.
Beyond cool what it’s built from but I don’t think it’s for me. I don’t think I can use something that heavy here.
Quick search says they were impossible to get parts for 15+ years ago so that’s got to be self service now - but the specs read like parts should be interchangeable with application of brain. Cummins 4b engine, Dana 60 axle, Eaton transmission...
http://www.howardpriceturf.com/specsheet_hydropower180.htm
-
shop office set up, and functional on the trickle of internet that's active here now. after meetings this morning via telephone I'll get on all those service calls I need to make.
floor won't stop sweating. think I may need a dehumidifier in the office.
-
that looks exciting lol
-
I bet I could make dual adaptors on the front axle. 4 ag tires and something extra wide on the steers probably could support it without sinking when it's wet out. and with a dana 60, it could get a locker or limited slip or something. selectable locker or adjustable LSD probably the way to go for the application.
if it were 4x4 that would really be baller. Don't think that'd be an easy swap (nor worth it?) but being fully hydraulic it could be done. There was a factory 2 stage snowthrower setup too - and a cab that fit the ROPS.
I'll probably talk to him and throw a lowball, something along the lines of what I ought to have into the forklift it may be worth playing with.
-
did some searching on propane parts.
I think what my Clark has is an old style where the vaporizer and regulator are separate.
The newer impco style just combines it all.
I may be able to bypass what's on there and tie into another coolant line and swap on the impco style. hope the pressure is right for the mixer that's on there - but it should just be a throttle, really, right?
I couldn't find parts anywhere online that would repair that regulator, found one that looked similar for over $500. Haven't talked to a shop yet, but I think I can replace what's broken for under a hundred bucks new, such as https://store.intellaliftparts.com/p/jb-g.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw5Ij2BRBdEiwA0Frc9a9dYN4jOdtXiOKkvSlWx_hMuT1inbW40JtddjZd-sdnHne_jd_9EhoCuxYQAvD_BwE
-
Work office in the shop? I would never get work done lol.

reached?? I would even say created his own level!

I forgot to look what propane parts i have.
looks like
M100 is the mixer we use on jeeps (you need to add a butterfly or use existing)
VFF30 is the regulator
V8's used bigger stuff.
though- there were always 3 or 4 forklifts at J&J wonder if you could rob some parts for pretty close to free

$4/33gal bag at Bloomfield/Bristol transfer station. Figuring on 2 bags/week, that's $96/quarter. WM pickup service here is about $105/quarter. So I'm setting up trash service. I don't feel like burning cardboard and making special trips only on Saturdays.
-
only saturday? that blows ya
mine is open mon-friday till 4:30
-
Damn! Manchester transfer station is $0.14/lb.
-
2$ a bag (doesnt seem to mind 55gal drum liners)
or
60$ / ton
at mine
-
Mine is free for residents. Trailer loads or bags, doesn't matter. Reason #8475786 why Utah is better than NY. ;D
-
Mine is basically included with county taxes - trash and recycling once a week with those huge trash bins on wheels.

Same here.

Picking up microwave from stock at Henrietta Lowe’s today. Can’t stand no microwave any longer.
Other kitchen appliances ordered.
Anyone have the technology to thread black pipe? I have a gas leg in the right neighborhood already from an old garage heater. Just ned to cut it back and run it from center of house to exterior wall.
-
Lowe's has a machine that does it
-
But I have a long stick in my basement that will need it.
-
I think Tom have the pipe threading tool.
-
it probably wouldn't cost much extra to just replace whatever stick is too long and have all ready to thread together though. Need to locate stove exactly and actually measure and get the materials list together.
At least the stove isn't broken - that's just an upgrade. but I'll probably need an extra hand for everything but the microwave, so being ready to go will be good.
-
buy pre threaded pipe sections / nipples. you should have a 4' flex line at least for pulling in and out for service above the floor. and a shut off.
threading black pipe best done with real tools most people dont have. i did it for years. not worth the investment or time.
-
I used to do it for stage work. It’s a bitch. That was 2†stuff, no joke. Will make this 3/4 or 1†whatever it is look easy
On layout, I’m thinking stub through the floor, then shutoff and flex, rather than shutoff in crawl space. Right?
-
Yes thats how mine is done thru floor 3 or 4 inches then shutoff then flex line.
-
1/4 done. Other three being delivered.
Dropped my level behind the stove while aligning the bottom bracket, and had to pull the stove out to retrieve. Looks like all I’ll need is the flex hose!
Makes for a short follow up trip. Flex hose, light fixture, getting there.
Under cabinet lights are on the way.
-
Rest of the appliances will be delivered between 8 & 8 Saturday.
-
wow only a 12 hour window lol
-
Thats a sleek looking microwave
-
nice!
i still havent installed my new dishwasher. never used the one in my kitchen either haha. need to slap some counter tops in soon too. meh
-
Any surprises about the house so far? either glee or disappoint.
-
I have bird problems. They're in everything.
Need to dig out my roll of chicken wire and go to town.
They're above the insulation on the old side of the shop, they're in my attic due to some missing trim that I was only thinking of weather-tight when I saw and ignored, and they're in my drier vent. The one acceptable place they're in is the propane tank hatch for the shop.
Found drawings from 1984 of the standard configuration for this 1988 build. Confirmed the strong suspicion of modular, shows where the 4 pieces broke up (no surprises)
The water is a fun project as long as the sump pumps keep working. If they don't, that's a lil problem.
The disconnected battery backup is present, need to evaluate that.
Oil furnace doesn't light. Hydronic heater shows no water pressure though valves are open.
Shop needs new lower power and more effective lights.
LOVE the property.
Road noise isn't much of a bother.
Working in the shop office is everything I dreamed of.
Miss a sidewalk between shop and house, but from back door off the deck to the shop is a dry route even when it's soggy.
overwhelming in all regards to have this large an increase in space.
-

I have these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C7HYVR1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
in my garage and love it. So cheap and easy to install. Took out all of my old CFL lights and put these in. Looks much cleaner too.
-
nice!
my lights:
machine tool task lights:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PVFRBXT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
out door dusk to dawn replacment light bulbs for existing fixtures. works awesome!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0747LKXGM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
200W high bays i use that are great but your ceiling is probably too low for best use, more of 100W would be better.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RLWLMCV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
4' linkable or separate or daisy over work bench / task area
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MDFZCWV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
outside motion- i have two of these. they are TOO bright i took them down, i couldnt sleep with it on back side of house, lighting up my room. plan to move to barn later.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MS8XQ9B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
have this on the house and a couple on my moms house. good brightness, work great.

Any surprises about the house so far? either glee or disappoint.
floor under the stove looks questionable...
-
wrinkled rolled linoleum.
-
best price I found at a glance is about $30ea for 100w high bays
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GJLYR4J/
I'm thinking based on price per fixture of around $15, these might be the way to go
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07W9KZ1TC/
I have a LOT of conduit on the ceiling for all my current lights, which isn't going to do me much good I'm thinking. Need to figure out a full plan and arrangement before pulling trigger on any quantity more than just a sample. I could remove a bathroom from the shop and pick up a fair bit of space if I wanted to and that would affect the lighting plan as well.
I think I need to do some sketching.
Found a bird entry point, need to get some foam.
There's a small gap around the vent stack for the paint booth. It's a floating stack through a hole in the roof, with a wide storm collar 1.5-2" clearance above the roof collar, and then about 2" between collar and stack. I wonder if I could pack that with stainless steel wool or something? I don't see anywhere I could chicken wire around it without potentially causing roof issues, and I'm sure it's a floating stack for a reason.
The cover on the stack was also askew - have to secure that properly. One side was bailing wire one side was out of place and insecure (it's a center hinge double damper thing)
Rubber roof on the old shop looks recent and excellent.
-
poked at the waste oil furnace, made no progress on that. realized it needs air - giving it air pressure wasn't adequate to wake it up.
hydronic furnace works, found the system pressure valve and gave it some water, all good. domestic hot water good as well.
the overhead propane furnace blows but doesn't light. Need to get up in the air and look at that.
Electric baseboard next to the office desk works great and has been warming up the office every morning.
I'll need to get a couple bags of wood pellets and some fireplace tools, brush, ash bucket, and check all that stuff out. Need to sweep the chimneys; need to learn how to light a pellet stove; need to clean out the downstairs wood stove.
-
damn, yall still need to use heat? It's nearly June
-
better to check operation now. for working in the shop I wouldn't need it but for sitting at a computer I do.
overnight low tonight is supposed to be in the 40s. Office has been high 50s when I come in at 9:30 or so after heat off overnight.
I just talked to the seller on that batwing mower. he said his bottom dollar is 2200, and he does have the missing casters. they just need tires. it runs, it cuts.
I told him I was thinking 1400. I don't know if I could get him to 2000.
I think that's about the price range I'm at for used zero turns. This thing could make real quick, work but could just get quick stuck as easy. Tough call with my penchant for wanting stupid shit.

found a reset switch on the oil heater. makes it make noise. think the feed pump may have lost its prime, not seeing oil pressure. need to skim troubleshooting/startup in the manual again.
need a taller ladder for the propane heater.
-
i cant stand 6-6500k next to 5000k lights.
5000k is the way to go, yes harder to find cheap sometimes.
-
I wish 5k lights were easier to find. My preference is 5k rather than 4 or 6/6500.
-
I would also love to replace the lights in the riding arena of our new barn.. there are 12 of the old Gymnasium style. Good thing there are many skylights so they are not needed most of the time, but will definitely look at replacing them in the future.
-
Erik said he and Jeff did his new shop on the cheap. I know from fb pics that it looks good, I’m curious what they used and if it fits my bill of “cheapâ€
-
Measure twice buy once. Should have gone 2†wider on the fridge. Damnit. Don’t know it care where I goofed in that.

Saw a shit ton of fish with good sun angle yesterday afternoon.
Looks like it costs me $25 to the state to legally take any of them
After I plant a garden I could make a case...
> NYS-resident owners, lessees and members of
> their immediate families occupying and
> cultivating farm lands, when fishing on their
> own lands.
-
Stupid amount of labor to flip a stove from NG to LPG

I couldn't believe it so I had to check with my own eyes... damn! you cant even fish or hunt without license on your own land in NY. NY really does tax everything. Licenses are taxation.
BTW, you're missing the word "primarily engaged" in your quote.
A resident landowner primarily engaged in farming (including lessees and members of their immediate families) when fishing on farm lands they are occupying and cultivating. https://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html
-
That “primarily “ Wasn’t in the text I found, which was secondary source. Wow.
Looked at shower doors today. I’m shocked. I hate shower curtains, but $250-500+? Damn
-
Is there a habitat restore store near you? Shower doors are a popular takeoff in remodels.
-
There are a couple places downtown Rochester that I can think of. Wonder if there’s something in Canandaigua that I don’t know of
-
There is one in canandaigua but it is only household stuff not much building materials. I think the henrietta one by dmv may have more but not sure.

discovered missing parts in both upstairs bathroom sink stoppers. whole drain stopper mechanism gone from the secondary bath, causing a leak under the sink from the drain. Have the parts, tagged out for now 🙄
Should be a 10 minute job as long as the trap comes apart. I think it's all threaded relatively recent PVC, so it should.

Houses are so much fun!
-
hilarity:
town assessor called me back this morning about getting things adjusted, he questioned the second appraisal (which I supplied to him) as reusing some of the photos from the listing. I told him about my first appraisal being stood up and having to make a second trip, so he asked who the broker was. He knew Marty McMillan right away and understood. Had no commentary 😂

Broken microwave and dumb wagon wheel chandelier left the curb in under 24hr. Broken stinky dishwasher took 36hr.

alignment machine status?

Poked my lawyer about it today.

forgot to tell you i found the propane stuff i have from my CJ5

Useful vaporizer? What I have on the way is that standard J or whatever it is.
Could definitely use an operational forktruck to clean this shit up

I needed to dig out four of the very most buried tires. Someone clipped a curb... and got to be first on a lift before any of my junk.
Joe is maybe an hour from emptied out now. Load in Gus to the house. Few more of those on the horizon
Gonna put the ATV tires back on Gus for now. Tired of spinning in the yard when empty.
House garage door decided not to. Don’t know why yet.
-
mixer with butterfly and coolant heated regulator. basically everything needed to put over an intake hole of a motor with good ignition, minus some hose barbs and LPG line.
-
It’s the vaporizer + regulator piece that I’m needing. Looked it over when dad was here, should be easy to abandon what’s there and install, I hope.
I won’t have what I bought until saturday. Might be worth it to me to grab it Thursday. Tomorrow is full with getting diesel, mowing, meeting.
Kinda can’t wait for those furlough weeks. In a normal year I’d have probably taken 3 weeks vacation for this now.
-
screwing on those replacement pieces will be way easier than what would be required to change to use what i have. id def try that first.
probably 2-300$ in value of the stuff i have also now that i think about it.

This or something like it isn’t one of those pieces?

damn, that's a lot of tires
-
mowed for about 90m before work today. got well more than half done. Wishing for 15 more horsepower. I did not look at the blades yet.
going across the grain in the back is rough, that's a fair bit of ruts. Need to override the mower disconnect and change it to a tether or something. Going across crossgrain bumps in back I get off the seat enough to disengage.
-
could a turbo be added to that mower's diesel motor?
-
Easily - but adding appropriate extra fuel isn't easy.
If that motor was available as a turbodiesel, I might be able to find the appropriate fuel pump - I bet it would cost near as much as the mower cost me though. And often the turbo versions have lower compression and more durable internals.
-
Just signed a stipulation of assessment at 260k and sent it back to the assessor. Still needs board approval but that's all but a given.
-
confirmed receipt, should get a letter from the board within 10 days confirming adjustment 👍
I didn't use 5 gallons mowing the first time - thought it was low and bought 10 gallons this morning, only added maybe 4 to the brim.

at least it has a CD rom drive lol hopefully some disks came or something useful to transfer to a non archaic system is available.

Yup, they loaded it out and were supposed to leave it. I didn't confirm function.
Hopefully I've got a home printer now! I'll just need to get that unit on the network as a print server 🤣

anything else missing?
-
safe combo, they don't know it.
I missed a couple things on my walkthrough that I would have beat them up about, but not worth chasing. (dishwasher and microwave non-op, birds in drier vent, missing hardware under house bathroom sink and a leak because of it)
-
the safe is fun that i found.
i bed if you cal manufacture with SN they will tell you with proof of ownership
or call the number thats listed on google for the shop and see if some guy answers knows it

Just checked that out. It's a First Alert, they have a form that I can have notarized and they'll sell me a key for $11. https://support.firstalert.com/s/article/Get-Help-with-Lost-Safe-Keys-or-Combinations

sounds fair enough! does the key allow you to re combo it i assume?

Tires all in the paint booth. Everything but the axles off the trailer. Should be a much shorter evening tomorrow to park the now-closed popup and Beetle, and hoist axles and drop them on the Ram. Thanks smike for that idea. Couple chains and that should be easy as long as I can get them high enough in one group. Otherwise mildly annoying.
Had a hard time lowering the Forward brand lift. Couldn’t find the lockouts. Thought it was maybe a hanging air line - but that air line only helps the lift lower faster. Little tiny rust colored wires hanging under the lift travel brackets.
Little trailer is a great size for the golf. Didn’t have trouble with the flat tire. The popup was a bear to get off. My guess about the jack hanging too low was right. It caught two crossmembers.
Ready for a road trip!

I think my garbage can is due this week? Left 3 full drum liners and a washing machine box of cardboard and packing materials in Gus at the curb. Thought of it while watching sweet lightning show from the porch.
Hopefully WM grabs it, but I’m not sure they will. I think I said start my service after the can arrives.
That was a mistake...

That was a mistake...
They took Gus? 😅

That would be a shame :P

Gus is super useful now!! Don't pick on my littlest guy :p
-
Alright, I'll give ya that!
-
That Tree mill looks like the size or bigger than my Beaver. Looks like it also puts the bridge ports to shame in girth. nice!
variable speed head looks like? what HP? you plan on more machines and anything 440? probably best to do what i did. I like my system but id go 10hp for the rotary if i were to do it again, and need to reasearch swapping the caps to get my system more ballanced. its way off on the line currents right now.
-
Didn’t look at tags on HP.
I think it’s gonna seem a beast when reassembled.

Definitely encouragement to get the forks operational. Kinda fills the garage and significantly impacts traffic flow

Time to pull a head off the Ram soon so I can hopefully have a truck again.
-
As for other things, I almost think I’d get more use from a lathe than a mill. Idk if I’ll bother with a big drill press or not but just chucking a bit sure has appeal so maybe. Not unlikely for a cheap big lathe to be 3ph, so worth planning with that in mind.
-
Under cabinet lights make everything better. Limited counter space is probably going to piss me off far less now that i can actually see it. Took surprisingly long to put up this morning.
-
Love it!
-
Looks fantastic and those appliances are killer.
What did you use for under cabinet lights?
-
Two sets of these, I think I ended up using 5 on each side, both in 3+2 for cabinet widths. Cable management at the power supply end isn’t great but it’s out of sight.
Honeywell UltraPro 10in. Linkable LED Bright Strips, 5 Pack, 1700 Lumens 2700K Warm White Light, Low Voltage, Under Cabinet Lighting, Strip Light, Flat Plug, 44416 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VX7FWCH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Q7p3Eb2D32RB0
Excellent output and color temp.
Found a second issue with upstairs sink that had the bad drain: cracked feed between shutoff and faucet. Still had a leak when I tested but not from same place. Then noticed cold side was shut off. Hot backfed cold with faucet on, and leaked from cracked hard supply line.

Maybe there would have been something an inspector would have caught that I missed, after all. Wouldn’t have changed anything but I’d have been slightly more prepared.

Old side of the shop has I think (11) 8’ fixtures, (2) 3 bulb and (1) 2 bulb 4’ fixtures plus (10) 4 bulb 4’ fixtures in the paint booth.
New side has (29) 8’ fixtures.
I think I could start with a single bulb in every 8’ or skip some fixtures and start myself with 2 of these 25-packs:
Quick goog says when my existing bulbs were new they put out ~4775 lumens.
CNSUNWAY LIGHTING 8FT LED Bulbs, 96" 45 Watts Single Pin LED Tube, 5000K Daylight, Dual-Ended Power, Ballast Bypass, 4800Lumens, Frosted Cover, Replacement for Fluorescent Light Bulbs - 25 Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DYKDT93/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_c.u3Eb2W1XP22
-
i was excited until i read "Existing ballast needs to be removed or bypassed"
F that, rip all that shit down if you have to go in an change everyone any way and put up new modern stuff.
-
I think everything is in conduit...
-
Yes, 100% metal conduit.
I’d strongly prefer to just leave existing fixtures for that reason.
Similar effort to rewire as to tear down. Have to dismantle a floro to pull it. Expect there are wire nuts inside already and I can pull bulb, pull cover, un-nut & re-nut and put cover back on.
I took measurements of everything today, will try to draw up some things.
Looking for super low profile lights for upstairs storage and some low-end inventory system to easily track where I shelve things.
-
Very fast rewire in the new shop. Covers are even quick clipped.
Clip at tombstones on both ends, one end to black one end to white. Will need one extra wire nut at what’s photographed as the far end here. Super simple.
-
Low lights in the old shop are the same. Higher lights are older but still have release clips. Probably similar.
Need to do the math on the new side to see if cost of running vs work ever pays off. Old side needs new bulbs and likely ballasts anyway so it’s a no brainer.
Anyone have a 12’ a-frame ladder? Didn’t see anything reasonable on marketplace this morning. Even if I borrow the lift for this job it’s still something useful here. Extension ladder isn’t useful inside!
-
i think chip has big ladders
-
60 vs 106 kWh monthly if I run 8’ lights 15hr/wk
My rate is usually 10-11c/kWh depending on use (more=cheaper
So that’s like 6 vs $10/mo. Am I doing that right?
I was expecting much worse.
-
you bought the wrong property if you are only having the lights on 15hrs a week lol
;D
i think your math is correct ish
-
well what that tells me is: fix the dim side, and just fix the ones that are burned out on the bright side because it's not gonna pay for itself in power savings by any stretch.
if they were on 60hrs/week, it would pay for like 2 bulbs a month in power savings 😂
a single 25 pack does all of the far side. I'll start with that...
-
I'd still swap to LEDs.
Brighter, more consistent light. No flickering. No having to wait for the CFL to come on when it's cold inside.
-
I'll worry about dropping an extra $500 on lights as a nicety once necessities are closer to all set. There's a lot of things ahead of upgrading things that are currently functional or mostly functional, like pallet racking in particular
-
I'd run it!
-
When we do retrofit tubes it's often 20+ year payback. And I have a feeling a lot of the Chinese led tubes will be failing much sooner than their lifespan.
-

Didnt realize it'd be that much.... yeah, makes sense.

Guy got back to me but someone was on the way. They did grab it. Seller not a subscriber to the Craigslist Doctrine of First Cash :(
-
sketched up the shop yesterday, put some ideas in my head to kick around.
Most of those ideas say that 4 post lift is in the wrong place. I think it may belong next to the paint booth on the other side, or might belong nowhere here. but I think that's a mid-term not a short term change.
Started looking for some pallet racking. this doesn't look like a bad start
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/758912394638507/
I'm also very curious how strong the top of the paint booth is and what could potentially be done to have storage over that. It's much less a waste of space if at least it could be storage above. Not that I'm hurting for storage in general - what I'm actually hurting for is heavy item storage. Steel rack, axles, engines, transfer cases. Pallet items. The way things are set up in here, I'm pretty limited on accessible wall space that I can put 4' deep racking on. The only part where that works is behind the office.
If I start parting things out, body parts above the paint booth is what comes to mind for proper weight-density. Body parts never seem to move, though.
I think I can think about a toolbox or two now, too, with some clue of how things arrange.
I do wish I had easy access to see roof construction on the second bathroom near the staircase. Considering removing it; also seriously considering it to be a pallet drop point for loading things to the upstairs storeroom. I think I'll have to pull sheeting off the top side to see what it's built of and figure a load rating. Hard deck ceiling underneath.
EDIT to add:
paint booth is about 14' wide. So 12' load beams and pallet racking uprights are no help there.
-
i thought i needed a metal rack, untill i realized the pallet racking diagonal supports work great for storing 24' sticks of things. i have a wood section, conduit and PVC section and steel. its amazing lol
id take more racking above the wood shop, and some other smaller stuff over by the waste oil area.
-
thats a shit price for pallet racking. 1000$ for (6) 10' uprights and (12) 8' beams?
i paid 500$ for (10) 14' uprights and (32) 8' beams, (32) wire racks 48" deep. that was probably a crazy deal, but you should be able to do better than above.
-
did a bit more shopping around since I pasted that, going rate is ballpark 75/upright and 20/beam. So that one isn't real good. Can get similar for around 600 a few places.
you did get an absolutely crazy deal. didn't find any of crazy deals live right now for anything taller than 8', and I want 10+ since ceilings are ~14.
-
weld some of these legs together to make them 10+ tall
https://rochester.craigslist.org/tls/d/livonia-center-cheap-shelving-storage/7129597836.html
-
How's this on price? I know you'd been looking. I'm not finding much to compare to.
Axle rack material and maybe frame for a chain fall crane - but I'm thinking I'd just skip the 9" material.

is the idea of gable ing the first bad roof to have a 14' door so Joe can pull in dead?
might be good to remember that in layout plans
-
Not dead, but if I ever do want to pull Joe in through that door, the alignment 4 post lift would be in the way of that as well.
-
Just throwing out an idea - if you wanted shelter for Joe, look into big carports on FB marketplace. I see them popping up in my AO from time to time, people selling their carports reasonably cheap that are sized for a big boat or a 5th wheel/RV. Seller usually wants the buyer to break down and remove which makes it cheaper.
-
not many of those used around here as they don't stand up to snow load well.
-
not many of those used around here as they don't stand up to snow load well.
Ah good point. Didn't realize that when I said it. Carports are very popular here for sun protection.
-
This is from the guy who knows Jim M. Bit high on beams, and he says his used 12' uprights go quick every time, popular size.

he did work at delphi, and went to high school with Jim.

Bit better, yes. Still a fair bit o cash.

Very tight, but it does fit with a pallet on.
-
I think the upstairs storage and shelving will be over half full with my crap. Nice to get to sort things out, hopefully i have the discipline to not sit on things that really will never get used. Throw out pile is growing as i unpack.
Need to get shelves set up for specialty tools in cases, and refill the bolt bin. Workbench set up, not sure it’ll stay where it is but I can stop using the lift for a bench now and put more tools away. Chipping away!
Definitely don’t feel like day job tomorrow.
Two more weeks till furlough.
I should set a goal of tearing the Ram apart so I can have that back on the road and try to find a local friendly shop for inspection stickers to get the collection legal-able.
-
I got the mill head on. Wasn’t a fight at all, solo.
Idk if this is final location or not. Didn’t test if the lift could pick the assembled machine. Expect it can.
I’m about 22’ from the one existing 240 outlet on this side of the shop (which is in a meh location. Bottom of the stairs). Also about 28’ from the electrical panel.

lightbulbs just got here. 72" box is big n heavy
going to borrow a scaffold from Erik. Gonna clean out birbs while that's here too. I can't wait.
Fuckers are loud and annoying from the office.
-
Popped in 6 of these bulbs in easy access fixtures on the old side. I’m quite pleased, especially up front where the old bulbs were real tired. Didn’t see if my amp clamp might tell me anything about the true upgrade. That could be interesting. Bet I’ll continue to forget to do that.
-
Lots of “drool†under house gutters. But not garage. Cleaned out yesterday, and should not have been overflowing, but I didn’t verify.
I wonder if drip edge is too short?
Disappointing from a “don’t rain in my windows†perspective.

Not pitched correctly?
-
Garage gutter has a pitch issue. Looks like the two-car-wide-door’s header has sagged an inch or two and caused that. The others drain well enough pitch wise. I don’t think they are peeled away from the fascia, causing a gap. But I’ll look closer at that.
-
Also check for clogged down spouts.
-
cleaned them, and unplugged a couple downspouts, during yesterday's second rain. will double check...
-
I have 3 workbench tops if you want them. they are just 2x4 frame and osb top- but will end up in burn pile. they were the tables i built for under my old apartment. remind me tonight if you want them- they are in the lower barn.
-
I would take those if Mike doesn't want. I'm fittin to build a new workbench in my basement this weekend. Slowly turning my basement into a bike shop lol.
-
I'm probably not into OSB, but I do always like lumber. I'll be in the audi so if they're more than I think 40" wide or if they're filthy that's a no go.
-
Learned there's zero point of any garbage/recycle sorting aside from what counts against garbage volume. Everything goes into one compacter truck.
-
id say 7/10 on filthy being under my apartment for 8 years and lower barn for a year now lol, np!
-
Sounds like Erok‘s!
Need some power (& water for ice maker? I’ve maker in the house is spoiling me!), I think this is the spot.

propane service gas check all set. tech thinks the house regulator is undersized and may need an upgrade. Winter will tell if the stove doesn't run as hard as it should when furnace and water heater are both running.
He also agreed with the from-the-ground guess that the igniter is dead on the Reznor hanging heater in the shop.
-
Last load from paint booth to house loaded, last load from paint booth to upstairs storage loaded. Couple things I think left in Joe for storage. Loading and picking,
Loading and picking.
Not being nearly so productive in the house with all the crap that’s going over there. Might be spooled up for a good purge.
Ordered a low pressure fuel pump and fittings to hopefully go to built in tank. Siphon feed is causing frustration, need to play with choke, stalls... bah.
Anyone need that small brown fridge? Debating whether I try to use the 120v in Joe or if I run the MUCH smaller 3 way fridge from the camper.
Still need to unload the popup. Mostly fluids and lumber... And probably tear it apart? Maybe wait for shelves. Shopped hard for shelves today and didn’t hit gold.

Good I tarped the motor. I did wait out the worst of the rain under a closed gas station’s

Everything works!!
Lathe could use a new belt, unsurprisingly.
Temp wiring.
I’m thinking hard conduit from existing 240 outlet to phase converter mounted to the wall near the outlet between the machines. I only have one good whip from box to machine. The other is naked wire.
Need a switch/contactor at the phase converter too. It’s not supremely loud like smike’s static converter but it would be nice to switch at point of use instead of breaker panel. What’s good for that?
I don’t have good bussing to connect two machines to the phase converter. I don’t know what I should use for bussing that in a junction box. There’s a tiny bus strip there intended for 1:1. Not happy assembled as a twofer.
While I’m at electrical work, need fridge and range outlets too.
Long list of electrical sprouted up!

Disconnect switch
-
Mine is a 5hp rotary converter with auto start. Nick has manual start i think with a disconnect.
there is some majic with running and starting caps in mine. one blew that i replaced a month or so.
-
Disconnect coming.
Auto start seems neat, but it’s so quiet I don’t care
Tire machines are expensive.
No good options on modern machines. For old shit this is a sweet combo. I always wanted one of those bumper jacks.

that is piss poor design! how could that have not possibly happened before in a working shop with monkeys lol
-
$90 mistake.
It has no drain. That’s cool. Guess I’ll just leave it up instead of using it to put a new tube in my mower tire.
-
Flipped 180* will improve clearance.
Motors and resis are on the other side of the lift post on the other 2. Could still get hit but not nearly as easily.
-
weld bump stops onto the post.
-
Weld on the post? Probably be fine, but no thanks. Same realm as welding on a heat treated truck frame.
Doubt it’ll ever happen again especially with the tank flipped and being aware of it. Also won’t be an old brittle tank.
Anyway I came to say this, not y’all about that
No tire machine but I can manage things with some nice helpers.

I meant like a tack weld, nothing deep. It doesnt take much to make a bumpstop to prevent this from happening again. Or make a cage for that reservoir.
-
It can’t be deflected though. Angle is locked as soon as it’s off the ground. I guess I could keep it from going that far as it leaves the ground. That’d do
-
I’ve realized the toolbox belongs where I put the shelves. Essentially the dead center of the shop. Minimizes distance to any point. Tools in use definitely end up belonging on the tool cart that goes to point of work. Full set of sockets and wrenches. Current tool cart is really too small to carry full set of metric and standard both.
-
i end up using the projector cart as a tool cart when working on the lift. it saves time running back and fourth to home location of tools, and also encourages you to put everything away when the job is done, or at least ever other day when it gets over crowded.
-
Dumb question: how bad an idea to put a 240 and 120 outlet on the same circuit? Thinking just run 4 wires from a 240 breaker to a 240 and 120 for fridge and range.
Assume against code, and probably a bad idea for reasons? But curious.
Just run 6 wires from 2 circuits the 15ish feet and do it right.
Need to make a list and see what might be in the auction lot box. Probably rough that out tomorrow.
-
im guessing something to do with no neutral on a 240 source and you dont want current on the 240 ground...
not sure if i answered that correctly but ya just run more wires. wire and conduit is cheap for what you get forever in a nice building!
-
Oh yeah, it only would save one wire not two.
I need to get some stock of house wiring wire.
-
i like the oil/gas resistance thhn stranded for everything house or hotrod
-
Looking at it in Lowe’s now. 61.50/500’ for 12ga. Idk what wire size I need.
Probably 10 for the welder/phase converter outlets and 12 or 14 for normal 15a stuff. Looking at what’s here to get an idea of a list.
3/4†conduit is 6.55/10’
1†is 11.28
1/2†is 3.75
Wow that’s a difference. Makes sense though.
-
10 for welder 12 for everything else. use all 20amp outlets and switches, all metal conduit
-
Grabbed a bunch of things minus wire and conduit. Should let me lay it out and see what else I need. And sanity check if 1/2†will work for 10awg runs. Seems barely big enough?
-
Conduit size rally only matters when pulling wire. Shop should be all 12g, if possible. Could use 14g for lighting as long as its on its own 15a circuit. Really just easier to buy and run 12g for everything.
-
should be able to fit 3 10g and 3 12g in a 1/2" but thats about it i think.
i good fish tape and lube helps. i have a fancy outlet cover with rollers that helps a lot if your pulling solo.
-
Just pulled back the 240v I’m not going to use. That all will get reused for the range, i think. They pulled (3) 8awg for the 240 plus a separate 12awg ground even though it’s all steel conduit and box to the steel panel box. Of all the rest that’s in steel, only the lighting contactor run has a ground wire.
I can push the (3) 8awg through the 3/4 conduit that is already run. I just pushed about 10’ of it. Not quite enough to get to the first J box, but around both bends, and it frees up by 1 wire after that.
I’ll match the 8 & 12 awg THHN that’s in use. No reason to adjust from a good thing.
Either of you have a conduit bender, or should I just buy the couple 90s I’ll need?
-
Good plans made. Shopping list made. I don’t need much. I don’t think I even need everything I bought today.
Just need to price shop wire tomorrow and figure out proper power feeds to the machines.
-
For machine power I’ve got 2 pieces of I think 10-3 solid, with ground, one in sealtite the other naked. Came with the lathe and are what I tested things with.
I’ve got the 10-3 stranded no ground that was my welder supply at Norman. Seems perfect, but no ground. Use that and run a separate 12ga ground wire? That’s my inclination.
-
Looking at it in Lowe’s now. 61.50/500’ for 12ga.
Lowes appears to be the way to go, I'm shocked.
beats Depot by ~$2
beats Waytek by ~$30
beats Amazon by ~$5 depending on vendor, and Amazon search SUCKS for that sort of thing. can't "-solid" and just get rid of the solid wires.
Wirebarn doesn't have THHN.

220v welder plug is 3-wire, 2 hot legs and a ground.
-
Right. I’m gonna use that for the three hot legs, and wrap a 12g ground around it got my machine feeds.
Laid out my panel. Hope the 1x8 I put up will hold the idler motor. All planned out and happy.
-
Sealed up some barn holes. 2 cans of foam and plenty of chicken wire remaining. War is on.
-
Couple hundred dollars of copper in the car. Guess I should stuff it through the walls
-
Roundup was 2 for 1 at Lowe’s ($25 for ~2.5 gal). Used 1.33 gallons hitting thistles I missed yesterday and starting on the margins of the gravel lot. Now doubly curious about smikes sprayer. Seems worthwhile for the gravel both in cost and labor.
-
zero results so far. ???
-
Have a couple covers to put on but wiring is done.

Except
Burned wire in the mill motor made like welding inside the fwd/off/rev box after 20sec I’d run time when I tested. Boy did that make me jump.
Lathe is 100% happy electrically. Haven’t cleaned it off of tooling to test the feeds and such.
Same insulation failure on that main motor lead as what took out the bed crossfeed motor, but only on one wire, not all.

This is the crossfeed motor:
I don’t know how to get the windings out of the case on the crossfeed, and I don’t know how to get the sheave off the motor spindle to get the motor cover off the main motor. Looks like disassembly was attempted once, two set screws are missing. I think it might be a thread-a-volt-in-the-end to press it off situation but I don’t have high confidence in that nor a long enough 3/8 fine thread bolt.

It’s a variable ratio belt drive setup, manual control of the driven sheave spacing and spring loaded on the driven side, plus a high/low ratio.

I swapped bottles on the lift. There’s no limit on how far that rear arm can swing until it hits the wall so technically that could happen again, but clearance improved significantly with bottle turned around.

What's the temp like in your shop?
Abbatte on FB said his barn was 108 degrees.
-
his stays pretty good and cooler that ambient if you keep the doors closed. tons of cold concrete and an insulated building.
just a little sweaty floors here and there if conditions are right.
mine will get over 100 with the doors closed. right about 95 with doors open and the one fan i have in the door way top
-
It’ll be interesting how mine does this coming week when lows are in the high 60s.
Probably will stay around 80 when it’s 95.
-
Which, I should add, is cooler than the main floor of the house stays.
-
So the occasional rodent appearance hasn’t fixed itself in spite of Rosie the cat and Titan. Rosie has gotten a couple mice in the basement. She’s earning her keep.
I spied plenty of trace above the ceiling and I hear them there sometimes.
It appears I’ve won round one of the bird war. Now it’s time for the rats that don’t fly.
Vacuuming the tiles before they came down and cleaning up the insulation, this took about 2 hours. This is gonna be a big project. About $500 for new tiles too. Was mismatched and had some sag and a few damaged spots so that was already on a long term list but the rodents moved it up.

Found an entry point. Also suspect around a window in the crawl space, as well as possibly around the cellar door.

About to go look at that from the outside.
Also found an ex-rat

LOTS of mouse house behind siding that was in ground contact.
Rosie and I each got 2 today. Interior nice are huge. The ones I got outside are typical field mouse size.
-
Talked to my neighbor for a while this afternoon. He’s pretty sure the too-deep backfill was done in an early effort to correct slope away from the house.
Could be.
Would take moving a whole lot of dirt and removing a tree or two to correct slope starting at where the foundation should be exposed. Probably near a foot. There’s an existing drain for the gutter that I dug around. I’ll monitor and maybe perforate that if things try to fill up against the block.
I haven’t tried to look behind the siding yet. What I have not seen isn’t an issue right?
No mice since this noontime. Rosie and I are 2-2 for the day. Sarah’s scorecard says we’re at 9 total. She and Titan are at 0, but he did kill a fledgling bird a few days ago. It flew/fell right to him and either died or he stepped on it.
This much activity, either we made a serious dent or I’ve got one hell of an issue.
I’ve filled in about 2/3 of the fence post holes. Only ones remaining are the two furthest stretches of fence.
-
where your pond drains into? I couldn't see any when I looked. Seem like all of your neighbors' water drainage get into a creek & run into your pond (and your yard) and no outflow?
-
Outflow from northeast corner of my pond along the tamarack woods to a county ditch at the Bloomfield/Whalen intersection.
Outflow has been bone dry since second week of June. Pond down 18-24†from mid July.
Neighbor’s pond down 3’ easily, i was surprised. He said they hit an aquifer when digging it, and it drains back when it’s dry. 14’ deep. He’s not sure what mine is but likely similar.

If you’re coming over tonight, I’ll leave the door@joe open for ya. I may be hiding in ac/basement. Lmk.

Will run up to Rochester tomorrow to drop my motors off at Pro Rebuilders and see what they say about them.
Shop stays at about 80 but it’s just kinda yuck.
Threatened rain today but it missed me JUST to the south. Few drops was it.

The sky turned black here but not a drop...

ass pour rain for 20 min in scottsville. was nice, i sat out side in a chair with 2 beers. cooled my barn down to 85.

Pro Rebuilders declined the motor lead replacement. Suggested Innovations. They’re a rebuilder on the north side of town.

Ebay has those cheap ones. I’d be all over that when I buy again someday.

Those cheap ones list 35†tire max. Coats 5060a specs say it clears a 50†tire.

there are ones for 35, 37, and 49" for a few more bucks if you look. under 2k for machine and ballancer. anything over 35 isnt it just easier to bar it on anyway (if not a bead lock even more not so) then to lift it up onto a tire machine lol

i still have a free one to grab from my uncle sometime

Still seems best to get that Coats, maybe even at full $1000 price. Hopefully for a bit less.
Didn’t get a chance to talk to my neighbor about borrowing his little trailer. Seller only has a hand truck to load with so low ramp trailer is a winner.
Ordered a new bar and couple chains for my saw. New plug made it run great but all my chains are whooped. Only got the two thin stumps cut flush. Two big ones to go, and decide whether to thin out the windrow pines by taking a few where they’re far too close, and when to take down the dying Beech (?) on the property line. Probably leave the live part standing, and do it in the fall before leaves fall. Maybe.

Brought home the 5060a. Hopefully no ragrets.
Took advantage of the rain to start on another reduction of over backfill at the garage man door. Accidentally holed a drain pipe for the front downpour so there’s a low point drain now. Don’t know if I’ll be able to save the slab or not, I doubt it. Pitched 2†or mate towards garage and roughly level with garage slab. Such sloppiness.

Have ~6†to remove.
Will surely take care of last post holes. Then I’ll just have to throw the dead mice under the trees instead of in a hole! That war seems to be going well.

My little mistake with the buried hose taught me that my downspouts don’t exit with the sump pump as I thought, and that the exit is significantly plugged. The system would back up next to the garage and that was the source of the garage water. Now that’s dumping into the yard instead of the garage. Minor progress.
I’ll figure out where it’s supposed to go and hopefully unplug it when it dries out again. That’ll be interesting to figure out :-/
-
dig in front of the slab and jam the forks under it and pick it up. i bet she would go
-
Good call!
I’m suddenly thinking about all sorts of forktruck digging applications. Sounds like a terrible and effective idea once it dries up again.
Hit almost 2†here today! Bet there’s no a wet spot anywhere. Pond was up .75†when I’d had 1†of rain.
-
I got a 48†steel rule to hang from the dock to watch pond water level. Aerator is ordered and coming to keep Cyanobacteria at bay too. Titan would be real mad to lose his swimin’ hole. Of it gets rid of the Matt algae I might get in sometime too.
Pond went from -27.5†to -25.25â€
Weather station says storm total 2.1â€
Grass is soft and green and nice on bare feet. What a change!
Be erased in 4 days. Enjoy today while it lasts!

Awesome that it came out intact in one piece. Your plan is fix the grading and put it back there correctly?
-
If I can get it to sit right. I have a 6†plastic pipe to work around and clean out too.
-
sweet unit!
-
So the pipe is 2†too shallow, minimum.
It’s plugged and needs to be flushed.
I don’t know the routing or exit.
Worried that my best route may be do just start digging to follow it? :(
Put garden hose in at the far corner of the house. Got no water here and could not hear any exiting anywhere else, either. Gonna open up my crack here and jam a hose in, see if I can learn anything else.

Guess I should just start over mostly from scratch.
Found an abandoned end behind the garage, and no idea where the final one goes. a garden hose outruns it too. Eventually. Exact same length as to the abandoned end on the other one. Fun!
At least two crushed spots on the one off the garage
I need a transit level to design fresh.

have you started mini x and skid steer shopping yet?
-
Forklift can do some light trenching?
I should see what it would cost to rent a mini ex for half a day. That’s all it would take. Or check with Mike next door about the one that was at his place for a month. Wish I knew of these things then.
I need to take elevation notes to see how deep I need to go and if I really can make the pond, pitch wise.
If I hand dig, I will be going under the essentially at-grade deck for its width to save a good 15-20’ of distance.
Didn’t find a cheap daylight-visible laser level in a quick shop. That will be key whether machine or hand dug.
-
I almost think Jeff Hall said he got something useful. I forget if it was a blade or bucket unit. I’ll have to ask him
-
Did remind me to look at plow trucks. Some semi modern rust buckets in reasonable price ranges. Seems dumb to add a truck to my fleet but things won’t plow themselves come winter.
-
The red ford is a 5.4 gasser with a tick, 2k obo. Bed looks badly rusted.
The ford with the white doors is a 7.3, but has a see-through plow.
The $1300 GMC is 8 lug reg cab long bed rot box. Sneeze too old to be desirable motor though, should be iron block 6.0?

2003 Sierra 2500 110k bed rusted out, residential plow, $1500
-
This could be a winner with the wrong price listed. Could even be a fix n flip, that should be 3500ish with the vee plow from what I’m seeing. Probably run it though, that’s pretty much exactly what I’m looking for Unless I can find a plow driven by a spare 6.0 aluminum Chevy motor.

put a quick-attach snow plow on high miler, in my humble opinion.
-
2wd dually sound annoying for even the little plowing you have to do. 3-500 jeep with a plow on it already sounds better. im sure there are tons out there.

so are some old rusty truck that'll probably only see 10 hours of run time a year lol. I'll be just as annoyed trying to get it to function when I need it. a lot of mice in and around the shop.
I have two jeep-sized plows available for taking.... just ask if you want one.
-
The enormous 2 wheel drive dually sounds terrible.
Seems stupid of me to be looking at adding another mouth to feed but I think I’d rather have a shitty 4x4 truck than a shitty Jeep as far as things that will fall apart and be mouse nests.
Do the Jeep plows have frames or hydraulics? Making one of them be on Gus seems a better use of vehicular resources and car count - but as is Gus doesn’t have adequate horsetorques nor driving wheels, and is incredibly useful around the property. I do want to do the dumbness, but don’t want it out of commission forever while doing that idiocy, nor screw it up by making it too tall to be a good powered garden cart.
As is, I think the Mowzer might would be a better plow rig than Gus? 1st isn’t that low in Gus, and probably 35hp at most. Maybe with good weight in the bed. A little less than i have now, where I’m afraid of bending or breaking things. I think i have as much dirt on now as I did steel during moving.
-
Zero jeeps of that sort found. Found a few more $1200 3/4 tons with plows.

your lot is big and open, and a straight driveway, can't see why a dually truck with a heavy pallet weight on the bed won't do it. although just the plow by itself cost about as much as a plow with semi-functioning truck or jeep attached to it..
one still have hydraulic plow lift, unknown condition. use a $50 HF winch to lift the plow like Smike did.
I won't put it on gus. Can't imagine what steering will be like with the plow lifted. they're heavy and thick metal, even after cutting it down. one used to be on a CJ, and other probably was on a willy.
You have a WJ somewhere.......?
-
no motor. just needs to be scrapped if not turned into a racecar.
things with frames are for plowing. things with sheetmetal fold up. I suppose that includes gus.
-
Materials, if not progress. Shoulda brought the truck. I just went for a level, but why not get what I think I’ll need while I’m there?

Between rain a week ago instead of completely parched, and adding gutter flow to the pond, a 1.4†storm raised the pond 3.5†instead of 2.25 on a 2†storm.
Pretty wild.
Have not done any math on gallons per inch of pond or per inch of rain over the roofs. Will care when it comes to watering, which is soft planned for next year.

Whats that little tractor on the truck bed?
-
Adjusted my problematic garage door and made it worse. Reverses every 2’ on the way down now instead of once, 4’ from closed, occasionally.
How did I make it so much worse?
Tightened a seriously sagging chain
Removed twist from carriage track due to poor mounting at door header
Centered door chain sprocket on motor final drive shaft
Greased tracks
The grease is probably the problem. Trolly has wooden guides and carriage tracks were bone dry. I figured that was a problem not a desired state.
Damnit.
Oh, and the drive belt looks like this and the model and part number give me 2 auction lot results and that’s it, so I need to just measure the belt and go to TSC

Sarah’s dad has like 15 wheel horse tractors in various disrepair and parts status and one that he actually uses. That is a nicely restored(ish) wheelhorse as a gift/ prank for him. It’s been threatened for years that he wouldn’t notice another red tractor in the yard so next time we go up that way, it’ll be tested.

Plow truckin:
‘95 Cummins 2500, with 7.5’ Fischer plow. Needs trans. Body appears okayish? Price dropped 3500 to 2500
If I had a trans laying around that would be very interesting but I don’t.
Would be a candidate to sell high miler for but boy do I like that truck.
Maybe I need to look closer at 4x4 swapping it and not adding another truck. Idk.
-
Trans seems easier than front axle & tcase
-
2:1 low in high miler would be SUCH a huge upgrade though.
But then counting on some mildly claptrapness and unknown milage and history 45 year old NP205... though with what I put the doubler in the Dakota through, and what we put the racecars through, I don't think it'd be something that would ever leave me stranded even dealing with manual trans + diesel torque
-
all 3 post above silly. stop.
-
Find that mythical $300 Jeep for me
-
Price keeps creeping up so I started looking at tractors.
What a rabbit hole. And so costly.
I hope the $800 Canandaigua broken-frame Chevy gets back to me and it’s cobbleable
-
Rotten Chevy acquired. $500. Needs more of the two critical fluids.
-
Driver torsion key nut ripped through the crossmember. Right front frame cracked near plow mount/ sway bar mount. Rotted through the bottom of the frame there where the bottom kicks up from bumper mounting and shit will sit.
Need to decide whether to LOOK for more frame issues or just fix known and ignore the rest. Probably makes the difference between a 2yr and 5yr truck. I might hit it with the needle scaler quick and see what’s obvious and patch it. Worth a couple hours effort AFTER drivetrain leaks are sorted
Cab has had body work. Poorly done.
Put a quart or two in the trans and it was still slow to engage. Think I saw a motor oil leak. Had good pressure after adding two quarts. Power steering was dry, seemed to have power steering after adding fluid but return line leaking badly.
Didn’t beat the rain home so I’ll look at it later.
Batter was nearly flat when I got there. Shows 10v after jumping and running and now restarting on its own a few times. Low compression garbage is awesome to start on a weak battery!
Good aggressive drives. Steers have tread.
Manual tcase shifts properly. Column trans shifter sucks and is out of adjustment, as they all do.

Running on generator. Don’t know why.
No neighbors out.
I have my own transformer at the street.
Steady 2.6v ac coming to main breaker from meter. Meter not moving at all. No brown or bright or blinks, just sudden out like a trip about 2hr ago. Just finished getting fridge and freezer and the sump that runs frequently powered up.
Really need to get battery backup on that sump.
I think I’ve lost gas cans. Seems like they used to be coming out my ears, now I’ve got 2 ea 6 gal for gas and Diesel and that’s it aside from small things.
I guess I never kept diesel before.
Getting gas now in case it’s still out in the morning. I don’t remember run time on the ole predator 3500

Do you know of the Liberty brand pump backup that runs on muni water? That’s the one I have. No batteries to deal with. Was $200 I think at VP Supply

never heard of, sounds interesting since I have city water, and close plumbing to that sump. will investigate.

12v 5gpm brushless circulator pump I bought when thinking about hydronic heat in joe is in service. Might use for a water pump. Quiet and decent flow from a 5/16 line!
. The 12v backup sump pump was dead too. Figured as much since it was removed.
So goddamn glad I bought those little battery water alarms!!
-
5 minutes on. 8 minutes off.
Using the same float that the dead pump had, was a plug-through so battery charger on that. Pretty glorious compared to hand bailing a sump pit until stores open in the morning
-
wow, guess you were lucky!
-
All set. Had a hose clamp pop off just as it finished running after i powered on the first time. Letting the pit fill again up for a beyond worst case stress test before I abandon it to automated monitoring again.
That was quite a shower.
Those pumps FLOW. Glad it’s quite clean water.
-
pond bubbler installed. doubt it will affect grass at all, but should reduce algae and prevent cyanobacteria buildup.
-
That water powered sump pump came in. They say NOT to connect it to same output as primary pump. Probably for both of two reasons - to not reduce outflow by pushing through a check valve and to not be overwhelmed by other flow if both pumps are running for some reason.
So: a bit more plumbing work than I was thinking. Seems totally worth it to sleep sound in a power outage without having to worry about setting up a generator.
-
Need to glue up PVC discharge and cement an existing hole in the basement wall around that 1.5†discharge line.
First “real†lathe use today. Apparently there are 2 3/4†non tapered threads. Garden hose/ washer hookup, and whatever was available as a Pex female 3/4 swivel thread. No idea what that matches with. It’s finer than garden hose, almost like NPT threads per inch - but not tapered.
Anyway, I had a short pice of garden hose with a female swivel. I harvested that nut but had to open up the ID to clear the shoulder of the pex fitting. Worked perfectly.
Little bit hack, but it’s plumbing on the finished side of drywall and in a utility room. More importantly it got me 3/4†feed without having to shut off all house water nor sweat copper pipe. Just hook up to an existing hose bib for pervious washer connection.
Little nervous about the super duper quick set cement I got, that’ll be a first experience for me in hydraulic cement and in fixing a wall and in cementing in a pipe.
Got it all pitched away from the house, and using a P trap backwards to avoid ice issues and give me an easy disconnect.
-
I apparently
Need to be more careful with PVC fittings and twist. Carefully marked two, and hit my marks, but they’re both a couple degrees off pisses me off.
-
Fernco coupling took up the angle. Meh
Still need to hang the drain off the deck. Otherwise done. Including the holes in the wall. Hydraulic cement is weird. And doesn’t cure as fast as it says on the tin but sure damn suddenly.

lowered mower deck to 4" from 5" and cut pretty long grass last night. Not bone dry.
Could really use more blade RPM. Rear discharge leads to clumping, it seems. Bogging was WAY better with the smoke screw turned a bit, but I was still wishing for more a few times. Definitely need to sharpen/replace blades. I think with the rear discharge, a mulching blade would be the way to go, but I don't know if deck blade RPM is critical to that. It probably is.
-
Bogging down & clumping while moving at speed? Slowing down or less overlap didn’t help?
Engine throttle/governor’s high idle rpm verified?
-
My riding mower is a 22hp 3 blade 46" width. When it had old blades, I had to slow down in thick spots so it'd cut evenly and I could feel it working harder. When I put in new gator blades, I could go through those full speed with ease. Nothing else was changed in my mower, only the blades.
If your blades are dull/old, try new gator blades.
-
gators are NLA for my model, I found somewhere that listed a 6 pack in stock and ordered. Hopefully they're actually there, otherwise I'll have to find something I can make cross-apply. Oregon isn't good at a dimensional parts list so that may get annoying.
-
Bogging down & clumping while moving at speed? Slowing down or less overlap didn’t help?
Engine throttle/governor’s high idle rpm verified?
of course slowing down or less overlap helps. so does covering same area twice.
kinda defeats the purpose of getting a big mower if I can only use half of it.
No tach on it, and I don't have a portable diesel tach.

Loving this unit i got from Brett. Part to repair lube pump will be here weds. Lift cyl needed one new fitting. Threw some wheels on it - only one swivel. Tripod isn’t SUPER stable.

Whole lot of plasma practice. “Art†sucks and feels like a waste of time
Needs cleanup. Probably paint it green or black and run a wire wheel over the aluminum diamond plate backing, and maybe clear that.
I’m not a good plasma freehander at all. Make another of these as intended, and I’ll be a bit better than when I started.

And I think I hurt the electrical box part my phase converter when ONE fuse blew when I reversed the lathe too quick earlier.
I bought the wrong box and it has fuses in it. I didn’t bypass them. Biggest fuses are 30a not 50a. Too quick a reversing of the lathe appeared to have blown only one. The rotary motor doesn’t spin up immediately when I throw the switch unless I have the lathe on too, and the red light is staying on.
Pretty sure I hurt it.

I like the number sign, nice!

Pond contents.
Water got super clear. Unfortunately the weeds and grass love it. Need to dye next year
https://youtu.be/NzMMYHocxVY
Working too much. At least there’s cool shit right here at home.
-
Aqua shade is what we use in our camp pond. Pull a bucket of water out and it is light blue water. We don't get much for growth anymore. We did get some pond grass 2 years ago that grew deep but we were told no amount of dye would have stopped it. Had to get grass carp to clean it up.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200808/4c100d9fc5ed672651cfaa6cebae40d5.jpg)
-
Grass carp, eh?
It’s grass that is my main issue. It’s visible all the way in the middle which I think is 6-8’ deep. It’s thick from the edge everywhere we aren’t in & out to 3-4’ deep. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200808/3bbf79bd36deebe60608e5f54c96e003.jpg)
-
I got some herbicide intended for emergent water plants. I expect it’s too late to dye this year but that should give me a head start next year with less grass ready to go near shore and less light low. But some fishs that eat it would be better yet.
-
wow that baby grew in since i was last there!
-
Yeah that water grass got real thick as soon as the water level dropped so that the bottom flattens out at 2-3’ depth. Summer level is 16-24†lower than it was in the spring when I moved in, when it was still flowing out. Now it’s essentially at the water table. I didn’t have the transit level before I filled in the fence post holes but my assumption is the pond is near where the water was sitting in them.
Waders oredered. I’m gonna spray the grass and remove it once it starts to actually die so it does t compost in the pond. No carp in stock now, probably stock those next spring.
I like the pond. I think it’s worth the effort and expense to keep nice. Still better than a pool.

oil furnace fired and functional during an allstaff briefing that didn't require full attention. reset pressures to spec after bleeding oil pump, and left it powered up but not calling for heat for about 10 minutes to let the heater heat the fuel and it fired up no problem. tweaked running pressures and flame looked great. it'll definitely blow some heat.
Not sure how I'll really want to set things up with the FIVE heat sources in the shop. Probably try to burn the free fuel for majority heat while keeping the floor warm with the radiant by keeping thermostats at similar settings? Reznor and electric baseboard for immediate demand. wood pellets as primary in the office when I'm working.
-
It probably only one way to find out is to wait until winter comes and see what make most sense and where you want the heat the most, along with their efficiency and shop's insulation and how often you have the door open.
no NG down either roads to hook up to? How long the propane tank out back will last you with the slab heat on, at 50* or 60*? Heated slab set at 60* is icing on the cake in my dad's man cave, even when it's below 0* outside, granted his man cave is heavily insulated. He told me it cost him $1/day on average; ~$30/month, but your shop is roughly 6x bigger and not as well insulated.
Crazy idea, but can make it very economic if there is something to buy (or build...?) to heat the slab with either waste oil & propane/NG, to conserve propane.
another thing to consider is to find out what work best for you on what you don't want to form condensation!!!!!!
-
with 5 heat sources at least you can leave 3 of them broken and still have some heat
-
If there was NG here, there wouldn't be LP. I was told I'm 7,500' from the nearest NG service line.
-
and I have NO fuel use history. requested utility billso from sellers 2-3 times and that went as well as anything I asked of them: silence.
gas company's records don't make any sense for this address, it had to be filed somewhere weird under a different address somehow, or there was something going on with third party filling (these are loaner tanks as are most propane tanks, so that's "not okay"). Their entire history is one $25 charge from January '20, unknown what for. Sounds kinda like their records suck.
-
id expect the 25$ was a yearly maint cost / surcharge for not filling. hasent the place been empty for a while? no fill last year seams reasonable even more if the water was shut off
-
Probably try to burn the free fuel for majority heat while keeping the floor warm with the radiant by keeping thermostats at similar settings?
I don't think that'll work out well. Radiant works and efficient only if it's set at a temperature & leave it there 24/7 all winter.
My thought; Set your waste oil and LP forced air heaters lower than radiant, just enough to not be cycling when the shop isn't in use. Either should kick on & bump the temp back up after bringing a car in or out the door, or to turn them up when you need that extra heat in the shop for some reason that day. (radiant will take days)
but we don't know yet on how much (and reasonable?) LP you will be burning through the winter, as radiant may not for you if you can't keep it operational 24/7 uninterrupted all winter.
-
It was staged, but people were living here in January when I first looked at it. And water was on.
Could be on the surcharge though. Maybe they went hard enough on the wood that they used little propane.
I've gone from the 80-90% of a fresh fill to 60% in 2 months at the house on hot water and stove use. I think that's about where it was when filled, so little idea of accuracy of that gauge (shop tank was reading empty, but took 375 gallons on a 500. gauges are iffy.). That was 34 gallons.
-
let that waster burner run full bore all times. free oil is easy to get these days.
-
Either the floor is heated or not... I'm not gonna burn $1.70 propane as primary heat when I have several hundreds of gallons of free oil.
-
mill motors finally fixed. price is about 2x what I expected but given overall price and quality of unit I'm not mad.
Have not looked further at my 3phase issue. working too much. Welcome to August.
-
Got some waders and spent a few hours weeding the pond. Amusing but will take an age as far gone as it is. Didn’t take any photos yet. Will be wishing for a mini ex or loader to get things out of th me water but it will get me a ton of compost (that costs a whole $50/ yd at Bristols in Victor. Hardly worth any effort)

Motors back from repair.
New mower blades due today.
And it’s the last full week before classes. Bleh
-
As expected, drilling the mower blades SUCKED.
my drill press is high speed wood shit and that material case hardened if it got hot at all.
Did three of six. welded on the deck a bit. Mounting tube cracked (repeat or previous repair) and under deck blade guide bent and cracked.
Mowed my front yard in drizzle at 10pm:
Country living achievement unlocked.
Cut looks amazing in the dark. 3x the cutting length, twice the lift. Did have to grind 2 blade ends that would kiss (1/16†longer than spec)

Did it roll coal or more easier now?

Mowed my front yard in drizzle at 10pm
That is SOP for one of my neighbors
-
I'm sure it was loading as it should and blowing some smoke in the hard parts. didn't actually _bog_ anywhere running full speed, and it absolutely would have before if not nearly stalled.
there's some very visible grass where it was tallest but it's less clumped and more spread. it was WET to the point I was having traction issues from clumping on the drive tires, and I probably cut 9" grass to 4.5" in that area.
Cheaper than turboing. Not sure if easier due to difficulty of drilling the blades 😂
-
didnt someone say put blades on this thing day one ::)
-
someone said sharpen, not upgrade. what I pulled off weren't murdered, but Look at the length of cutting blade between these and stock. between that and the lift... yup.
-
Your old blades looked like they were nearly new.
-
the comparison photo was with a literally new spare blade. I got 2 complete sets of used with spindle fittings (one mounted one spare) plus one spare naked blade.
-
This racking was an adventure. Highly customized by previous owners haha
Shelves all welded together with legs bolted.
Only had to cut a couple bolts. Chad and seller helped tear down. Thanks for the lead
Should be easy reassembly with forklift, the legs are real light. Hopefully the size and shape work out somewhere good.
Will trim off some hack tot dumbness from the bottoms. Legs are about 10’
Two 8’ bays with 3 shelves each I think.

Welded spreaders on all shelves, and 1/2†particle board for about half of it.

$1200. Some assembly required. BIG bitch. Also big dumb load.
Free iron block 5.3/4l60/tcase too. No pcm or harness. And 350ish gallons of oil in 2 totes. And a tire hookup and oil heat knowledge.

Crazy indeed. Fully agreed.
Chad seems to know all about these.
Didn’t put any legs on, I think they may need to get longer. Uncertain on placement, squeeze to get around both lifts. Wonder if I should make another leg and have 2 bays? Idk.
Nice to stack a couple things. Moved less than expected with bretts strap and chain box.

How has the commute been to UofR so far?
-
It is what it is. It’s either a little out of the way or a little towny but not bad. I can’t do it in 30m, it’s 35.
I’ll be working from home in part for at least a few more months. Great timing on that.
Should get more cars up to snuff. Have a lot of PM and deferred maintenance on everything. I don’t remember the last oil change I did.

any backhoe updates?
-
40 minute commute eats time is the only update on that yet.
hope to address a lot of deferred maintenance starting tomorrow. will be WFH the end of this week. Have some wrap-up of kitchen/dining room paint, check LF axle in the wagon, fix a grill and fan rattle on the allroad after hitting that dog, eventually everything needs oil changes, look at the plow truck transmission leak and exhaust, put the shelves together for real, maybe find a tub I can put under the engine stand for block cleaning. parts washer and diesel should do nice to flush it out, but I need to catch it. Still need to unload the actual hoe from the trailer. It's going to block parts of the shelves so I need to do things in the right order.
Need to fix my 3 phase too.
It should be a good long weekend.

Under the sink gets small with a unit like this. Tired of waiting minutes for hot water at the sink. The under-sink install is a damn crowd though with the disposal.
-
Made under the sink bigger.
Everything went smoothly adding outlet. 20a circuit so should be no worried sharing 1440w heater with 7.2a dishwasher and whatever the disposal is.
Dishwasher doesn’t draw through the mini tank. Just the sink.
Need to trim up the expanded floor area at some point, and finish running the blowoff through the floor into the basement.
Glass lined tank, should last. Hopefully good upgrade. Considering whether to put it on a timer to only heat during likely use times but thinking I won’t since I’m sure makeup time on a 120v heater is significant and I’d make the problem I’m solving worse.
Warehouse deal for the unit was just over $100. Less than $40 into install. One hose, GFCI outlet, and shit I had around anyway.

This is this one
Camplux ME25 Mini Tank Electric Water Heater 2.5-Gallon with Cord Plug,1.5kW at 120 Volts https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0789DTY5L/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_WqpvFbR8P1N2H
There are quite a few options but for a hundred bucks warehouse (there’s one at $99 and change now) it was totally worth the gamble.
For a wash up sink in a shop without hot water it should be a great option too. As cheap and easy and non-rattling as it is, has me thinking about it as a Joe hot water option too. The 30-40 gallon residential electric seems better for shower though. I still want some way to bank engine heat when I get around to that anyway. This is just such an easy way to get a sink’s quantity of hot water!
-
On-demand for any shower is the way to go
-
Rotted basement window replaced. One rotten window to go.
Hydraulic cement is my new favorite tool. Set the new vinyl window in cement just like they did with the wood window because fuck it. If that lasted 30, this ought to last 50.
-
6 gallons and min an hour to spray the growing parts of my lot. Used some pretty old stuff, hope it does something. 3 Gallon sprayer wasn’t too bad. Will be better when it isn’t out of control.
-
Whole lot more work to put together than modern stuff. Should be able to level and fix the one fucked up leg tomorrow. $60 v. well spent.
May redo the other “bridge†legs for strength too, and put pads on the bottoms of all feet. Forklift/ plasma/ sawzall should be a winning combination to make quick work.
We’ll see how this location works out. With the paint booth door all the way open or closed it should be pretty good for pass through. Could shorten by any arbitrary amount with 2-3hr work or cut off and re-weld.

Critical leg adjusted/repaired.
Most of the decking I got with it applied. Needs edges trimmed and some securement so it doesn’t slide off. Plan to keep the shelf where the sawzall is clear for transient project workbench. It’ll need a light. May take down the blocked light and/or add lights to the faces of the top shelves if needed.
Bottom shelf is about 4†too low to put a LS with truck intake on a pallet underneath. Curious if it’ll fit without pallet. Would love to keep engines low...
Ordered some turnbuckles to secure against building structure to keep from tipping. In case engines aren’t always low.
Materials rack on the buggy side still needs some adjusting. Pretty pleased. Almost ready to move on to other things. Like a hoe.

4 months on, no longer overwhelmed. Feels like I'm were I belong. Sarah agrees, and the kids seem to agree too.
I think it'll be another year before anything feels "done" but so much progress has been made that it feels like we're reaching a plateau of done-ness.
- Prescient on my sump pump mentions above.
- Still need to clean up and reinstall mop board in the dining room, but the awful wallpaper is gone. Next time I get bored and want to work in the house, I have a flooring product picked out to get rid of the 5 sections of 1st floor flooring across 3 rooms. Tempted to wait on mop board but I want to wait a couple years to do floor.
- No mice caught in the house in at least 2 months.
- surprise rotten basement window replaced.
- hope to steal some good wood from that window to fix a rotten front frame on the front bay window. that needs to be my next project.
- have a new control wire from thermostat to furnace to run, in order to run the fan on the furnace. Right now it's single wire, so no heat from the fireplaces will ever move around the building 🙄 I expect I'll be wanting to get a thermostat with remote sensors to keep upstairs bedrooms warm enough, but maybe running the fan will equalize things well enough?
- need to buy some tons of wood and decide where-how to store it. I can easily put 2-4 tons in the house garage but the forklift is a foot too tall. Probably steal the pallet jack from work for an evening to place that 👍
- should probably sweep my chimneys, bet they've been as neglected as everything else.
- I'm sure I'll miss that sidewalk to the shop, but I bet I can just commute in Gus and not give a fuck :)
-
unloaded some wood from Brett's trees last night, and had bad internet this morning. Had to move my truck out of the way of the wifi.
non-lowesdepot parts ordered to hard wire network house to shop. Will get conduit to bury ethernet, fix a power line to the stables I clipped with a mower, and energize compressor in the house garage along with stove wood pellets either tomorrow afternoon or Friday.
phase converter needs a start capacitor, and has the coating peeled on a 500Ω 10w resistor so that's getting replaced too. It just uses a motor start capacitor to feed that missing leg. Much less to it than I expected. about $20 in parts will be here Friday, 15 minutes of soldering and it should be golden oldies. More time to R&R than to repair.
got the crossfeed motor mounted on the mill but not wired yet.
fixed the paint booth exhaust fan damper, need to bring that up to the roof and mount it. It was not just falling off, but also falling apart.
mouse traps are going to move into the shop. Haven't seen trace anywhere I care, but I've seen them around going up behind the metal siding, once outside and tonight inside.
-
the bridge antenna system i have been using has been flawless. it worked at the old shop to shooting it across the street and through Cartwright inn to my shop.
-
One of the guys who works for me suggested a wireless bridge that he used to install, too. If I bump my internet speed though, the 300mbit wirelessi would still be a bottleneck, so I decided to go wired, with lightning arrestors on each end.
-
$15 of parts and 15 minutes of assembling and soldering and the phase-o-matic is phasing and maticing again 🎉
crossfeed motor works but table is too tight and kicks it out of gear. May need to disassemble and clean; feels like something is binding a bit. big motor isn't mounted or wired yet. lathe works again. winning!
-
Great public performance in my shop lot at rush hour!

free scrap i hope?
-
Bit more than that. Like 2-2.5x scrap price.
-
I was wondering where you were going heading South towards Honeoye yesterday.. you passed our convoy when we were headed to the barn.
-
both motors on the mill run well, but pop the breakers after running for a while. And pop quickly subsequently, so it's like they need cooldown time.
I wonder if I somehow have my phases mis-identified and I'm backfeeding something?
phase-o-matic is labeled A-B-C and I've treated that as 1-2-3.
Guess I need to do some wiring research?
yall have any tips? maybe on identifying a mis-wiring? I do absolutely definitely have everything wired for 208/240 low voltage not 440 high voltage. one of these motors WAS test run after lead change so should assuredly be good. The other was short a support bearing to be test run after wiring.
-
Motor is to run on 208 or 240v?
My electrician friend told me a bit while ago that 208v motor *can* run on 240v but its not recommended. Motor will run hot and shorten lifespan
-
phase dont really matter, switch any two and it changes the motor direction.
208/220/230/240 meh same in house voltage, you probably have 218-225v at your termination anyway.
get a clamp meter and see whats pulling where. maybe your breaker is crap or something is undersized.
-
Just re-verified wiring is consistent
I’m running no transformers, just rotary phase converter. Haven’t measured wall voltage.
My idler motor does not have a data plate.
Both mill motors marked as 220/440.
Lathe motor older than dirt and has no data plate.
Disconnects that are popping are identical for both mill motors and are this. I think this was running on 220 at the brewery, but I don’t remember for certain
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200930/8fb39220e31676e96da90eec341ded70.jpg)
-
No amps on b/2 which is the phase converter’s created leg.
Voltages are 200/210/235 between the legs.
The light on the phase converter acts as it did before I blew the capacitor and resistor. The motors work and sound right which they did not before I replaced the blown parts.
I guess I’ll check my wiring at the reverser switch and at the motors to see if I have an open on green and they’re running on 2 legs
-
i meant amperage readings to learn something. a clamp on amp meter. AC ones are common, mine goes to 600amps DC too :)

Nice shot of Titan taking a dump... :P
-
Hahaha
Nah: tail down, he was in process of sitting or standing up.
-
Finished drilling a hole on the mill. Ran for 2ish minutes before shutdown.
Zero power going from idler motor on the dead leg. Confirmed wiring from switch to disconnect.
Swapped 2 wires to reverse crossfeed motor, now it works as it should - but also still draws nothing on the dead leg and also pops its disconnect breaker.
I don’t understand how I have no draw on one leg with the idler motor going. Even if I did something wrong in fixing the phase converter, the idler should be doing its thing. It has no current on the dead leg at all.
I haven’t checked that leg with my lathe running.
I also haven’t tried pulling out the idler motor and going to just static converter.
Hrmph.
-
reread the phase-o-matic documentation and saw it indicated to put a SPST in the B wire if using an idler motor. I just did that, and symptoms did not change.
I didn't have a good angle to get the clamp around the B wire, but I expect it still has no draw, and that the differential draw is what's popping the 3ph breaker.
-
I just had a thought: I think I'll try flipping two legs on my idler motor. If it has a bad winding (how is it starting and running and sounding fine) but it may not be generating on that leg
-
I switched legs on my idler motor, and it made no difference.
lathe draws 12/12/2.9 and has no other circuit protection.
mill draws 3.5/3/0.4 and pops its disconnect breakers after a bit.
-
took some further measurements, and verified that the thermally controlled breakers are getting hot to the touch. I almost wonder if the contactors are dirty. it's supposed to be at 18 amp break, and I'm pulling 4.5 through it.
N-A 118v
N-B 167v
N-C 115v
A-B 199v
A-C 233v
B-C 210v
head motor 1.5hp 4.5a
A 4.6a
B .49a
C 4.5a
feed motor .5hp 2a
A 2.1a
B .47a
C 2.3a
I disconnected the idler motor and ran on just the static converter with head and feed motors. didn't measure amp draws, but breakers still got warm and popped.
I'm thinking I have faulty breakers.
-
that would be convenient and easy!
-
Said fuck it. Bypassed the breakers. No fire yet. No warm wires. Will check draw in a bit. Has done 6-7x duty cycle of previous pops and just about done.
-
Igniter replaced. It works. No matches or fire gel, just electricity.

Took some fiddling but I think I have the super fancy thermostat all set to run my pellet stove, with propane kicking in if it goes 5* under set point or can’t hit set point in an hour. Can also change mode to “emergency heat†instead of “heat†and run pure propane in a couple taps on the screen. Setup was complex, but day to day use is real nice.
Learned that my office stove should have an auto igniter too; Ineed to decarbon more things and look for that. Could be sweet to have that preheat for me instead of turning up baseboard electric to warm the office. TBD on how well the oil furnace heat gets to the office, it’s the very opposite direction even if doors are open.
Could maybe get another of these fancy units and set up staged heat if I wanted to get real bougie. I don’t think I can have it call stage 1 heat during overnight and stage 2 during the day though. I’ll have to figure out how to exercise the slab heat once in a while to keep it happy, and make sure the slab doesn’t freeze near the edges? Or is a 45-50* maintained temp enough to not worry about it even in bitter cold?
-
Figures...
Woke up to a nice warm house - from aux heat. First failure of the pellet stove to light since I replaced the igniter. Figures. I got a spare, but if it failed inside a month (or is that actually inside a week? Oye) I’ll probably shell out for the first party replacement instead of the reasonably priced one. I’ll have to test that this weekend.
-

What’d you mean by “exercise the slab heat Slab heat isn’t something you can turn it up when you need it. Set the temp and leave it there all winter. Treat it as your primary heating source, especially when shop is not in use. I’d say 50* will be good, or 60* if you’ll be in the shop a lot through the winter.
-
Right. But free waste oil vs 1.69/gal propane.
I just don’t want to give any risk of freezing it.
-
freeze it? it should be filled with glycol mix...?
-
I should sample it, I think there's a drain port. but it's hooked to domestic water just like my hydronic heat was at Norman Rd.
-
Stove lit several times this evening. I guess it was a fluke this morning.
-
Confirmed chimney stove pipe all fine. ordered new support and plug. There's a Selkirk part number on a band clamp, and it looks like the Selkirk pipe I bought for the furnace at Norman. I really hope that's correct.
Wasted a lot of time and effort trying to make my lil trencher. Design works, and strong enough, but single point hitch and lightweight tractor don't let me get to the 6" minimum depth I'm after. Especially when an 18" trencher rental is $66/4hr. I was hoping to direct bury pex for garden watering, too, and that's not placed yet. So I guess I'll have to change up priorities to get that done in one shot. 3pt hitch for the win.
-
my tractor will pull 150' of pex 6" under ground with ease with the tool i made
-
freeze it? it should be filled with glycol mix...?
plain tapwater.
passed look and sniff and feel tests, then tasted a tiny bit too, for good measure. If there was ever any glycol/alcohol/whatever in it, it's long gone.
-
Definitely anti-freeze it. Don’t want it to freeze ever, for in case there’s a deep freeze or if something fail or power outage and stop heating & potentially make the whole system a total loss. :o
-
ordered a tester, maybe I'll find a bit of propylene glycol in there. So many valves...
should be easy to purge loop by loop and drain the boiler if needed.

Sounds like when we put the invisible fence in for my mom's dog. Ended up using a planter unit from the farm, worked well. After many failed attempts with other ideas.
-
Direct bury things are so much easier.
Wonder what I paid per foot for 1/2†pex compared to pvc conduit. Could just run that for the in-ground and transition somehow.
-
94$ for a 500' roll of 1/2" pex on amazon i was paying
-
Within a penny per foot of the pvc conduit that will also need the labor of fitting and glueing.
I think I spent $75 on my 300’ roll. Didn’t double check that price.
New chimney support on over the weekend, plug arrived yesterday. All good!
Finished cleaning the firebox yesterday and replaced bad fire bricks. Door gasket was needed but forgot cement. That’ll be here we’d and the last fireplace maintenance will be done until early summer when it becomes annual after burning season is done. Like it’s supposed to be as opposed to five years of neglect then many hours spent.
-
Helped Keith’s buddy Jeff move a box van just now, brought home a couple grocery stock carts and low shelves as spoils of war. He used to own the save a lot in canandaigua. Auction leftovers.
If anyone needs some probably 0awg heavy strand wire, speak up. There’s a few 15ish foot sections I left for him to scrap. It’s roughly the size stuff I have on 100a service between panels, I don’t expect to need any of that.
-
If anyone needs to run thermostats I have at least 500’ of 5 wire 22awg building control wire. It was a 1000’ spool. The black wire in the bundles is good thhn I think 12ga. The red stuff feels real stiff and dumb.
I sorted out all the conduit connectors from smike and have good inventory in that too. Mostly 1/2†emt.

those carts went for stupid money on that auction, i could not believe it. good score if you got them!
-
There were three of those left at the store, keith took the third. Either they were not picked up (like the box van - it sold for $1200 but buyer couldn’t get a known-bad brake line replaced, so forfeit purchase and left it) or held back from auction for store tear down.
There’s one other maybe good to someone item, a probably 200 gallon heat recovery tank. Water in/out for domestic hot water or hydronic heat and an exchanger loop from hydronic heat or refrigeration return respectively.
It had been in use recovering heat from coolers for a warming loop.
Exactly what i want to loop engine coolant through for domestic hot water in joe, but at least 4x too big.
-
First fire in the wood stove tonight. Takes a bit to get a draught going through that big ass chimney. Smoked the fire out the first attempt by closing the door too soon.
Realized there are NO hvac vents in the basement at all. Things to adjust when redoing the ceiling, I guess. I was going to make sure cold air returns were open to spread the heat through the house.
Silliness.
I keep fixing that silliness – like this is a forever house or something. The next folk will really have everything tweaked exactly how I wanted it. Remote temperature sensor for the main thermostat connected too. Need to figure a permanent spot and run a wire. Shame the wireless sensor wasn’t as easy as expected. Damn complicated model range.

Diesel fueling station nearly done. 25gpm clearwater pump is a little aggressive. Took a bath priming it. Had second filter drain open to bleed and I was too slow when it caught. Have two drips. Took them apart once already to add a few more tape layers. Need a hook for the nozzle. Maybe need a support for the filter stack.
Pics later. Phone had gone dead.
6.8 gallons filled the mower.

First of new shelving up. I have two more legs that length, and a bunch half that.
I don’t think they’re heavy duty enough for full barrels on top.
I think I want to tuck the fuel oil tank between the heater tank and furnace. It fits between the legs. Dealing with full totes at a time instead of barrels seems better. Reducing floor footprint of stored fuel seems worth some effort.
-
Second fire downstairs, had to remove a relatively large bird from the chimney. Alive and well, so recent entrant. Too large to fly back up, i pulled the new cap off the bottom. But apparently small enough to fit between the chimney cap louvers. Also a bit of a puddle on that bottom cap. So perhaps there’s a top cap issue. Looked good from the ground in the dark.

Remotes on all four garage doors.
Hope range isn’t TOO good - the buttons really hang out and are easy to accidentally push in a pocket.
Got four of these, using three. Was able to share one recover for two of the shop doors since they have two relays. Found single button control contacts on all openers. Pretty sweet!

Got all excited about buying a trencher. Home Depot tool rental has one for sale CHEAP in Batavia.
Store says the site is frequently wrong and that unit isn’t for sale.
So, still need to rent one to run power and water and network. Humbug.
-
HD and Lowes websites are such garbage.
-
There's a admar satellite location in canandaigua, not sure if they rent to the public though
-
$150ish for a 4hr rental or 200ish for 24hr from Victor Depot. Did it for the gutter drainage.
-
Fingerlakes Equipment Rental in Geneva $125/day for 18" trencher $250 for a larger one.

you are an animal! nice!

And as with every used equipment purchase: deferred maintenance item bit me.
It’s a good unit but the end bearing was seized. That wasn’t compatible with my rocky backfill. Parts available. Just a delay.

nice! Metal fish tape is the way to go! 1/2" PVC meh probably would have got a 500' coil of 3/4" pex
pull lube might also help, or a second hand lol
-
Shop air to push worked way better than pulling it with a vacuum.
I had a slight neck down at the pull box that gave me issue.
Shorted myself on ground conductor to the shed, i was working off a partial 100’ for that and i guess i was about 5’ short of my run. Didn’t have a spotter/second hand and that screwed me. Have a pull string back through that one after not succeeding in pulling only one back to fix it.
Network needs to be punched down in the shop, otherwise that one is done.
Baby cat is doing real well.
-
Got water lines in the ground for the raised beds tonight. Need to turn down the garden hose fittings a sneeze to fit properly and take a PEX clamp ring. I got 1/2†hose barb ones cheap. Hopefully I did it right enough that I can grow to auto-water more beds after next year easily enough. I think I did.
Plan to pick up compost/topsoil mix tomorrow to fill them. Do still wish I had a tiller, would love to plant some berry bushes and bulbs elsewhere, and reclaim the front garden from overgrowth.
-
Heat up the PEX to slip over?
-
No problem at all. But the crimp collar won’t fit over after doing so. I guess I could spend hose clamps instead of machine time?
-
Power to pole done (now less extension needed to run a saw at the stables to fix the roof)
Lights work (preexisting, now on a switch on the pole)
Raised beds filled.
2 Cotter pins installed to fix roadside Radio Flier wagon. I told Sarah I’d tell everyone I made her cart two yards of dirt in it. I didn’t get the truck stuck.

Ready for shingles on the bad side. Has tar paper down and hopefully will be happy through tomorrow’s rain. I don’t think I feel like shingling overnight. I think I’ve done enough of that. If the paper blows off, it’ll dry out. I put the drip edge over the paper (cardinal sin!!), so it has a fighting chance. I took the easy road on the rotten rafters and just sistered about 3’ of fresh 2x4 next to them with half a dozen screws in the good part. Isolated good from rotten with a tab of a shingle. Good enough for a shed.

Have been enjoying the basement for big screen plus wood stove lately. has me looking at the previously planned lighting changes and some other things. I'm surprised that I'm not finding cheap Chinese dimmers/lighting controls for LED can lights. Just for stupid stick on LED strips.
Looks like Lutron and other name-brands still have a lock on that.
It seems silly to me to have a transformer at every fixture instead of one per X watts in a zone.
I just want to avoid running a bunch of extra copper to way too many switches (top and bottom of stairs, and a second entry door) when I want 3 or 4 lighting zones in a room. Doesn't seem like THAT much to ask for. Seems like I would need to run literally the same gear we put in a classroom to have a single button panel at 3 locations to control those 3-4 zones at pushing a grand in cost. Stupid.
Best alternative I found in chinesuim is tacky wireless remotes controlling 120v relays, so no dimming without smart bulbs. The cheap ones of which definitely suck.
-
Naked side of the stable got shingles after work. North side will probably wait till spring. Could be done in one warm day but not looking like that’s soon. And later ground will probably be too soft for the ram. Gus is a small target to strip into.

No after pics. Pitch dark when done. Imagine it dark gray.
Secondhand shingles off fbm at 1/2 retail. Everything i need and aaaallllmost all matching fir $250 instead of $430-460
Will likely have 2 sealed bundles leftover when done.
-
score!
roofing is one of the things i have no concept of cost
-
Whats the purpose of those stables for now? storage?
-
I think cost is way higher than when I didn’t the roofing at Norman. I think I’ve got a spreadsheet pricing that out. It’s ballpark $1/sqft for the shingles alone. Troy hooked me up on other leftovers.
Garden storage. Will need to redo doors/ wall/ floor to make better use. But now neither building should be falling down or rotting away anytime soon

Running the floor loop right now and burning propane.
The oil furnace seems to have an issue with the flame sensor right now. Replacement is on its way, $20 new on Ebay for Honeywell brand.
Behavior changed when I disconnected it, hopefully it's the cause. It ignites and shuts off immediately and the flame sense light isn't coming on. If I disconnect it, it lights for 2-3 seconds instead of half a second.
-
It ignites and shuts off immediately and the flame sense light isn't coming on. If I disconnect it, it lights for 2-3 seconds instead of half a second.
This makes sense that it’s related to flame sensor, based on my limited knowledge of these.
I assume you know to clean the flame sensor with high grit sand paper or scotch brite
-
I tried a finger wipe. Didn’t seem dirty. It’s way back from the flame front, seems like it shouldn’t ever really soot up. I suppose I should remove and look more closely.
-
I have to clean my flame sense every fall because it causes my furnace to short cycle on for 2 min then just as it starts producing heat shuts off. I use a dollar bill to clean works for the rest of the time heat is on.
-
Cleaning more didn’t work.
Didn’t want to light at all after that.
Finally moved more than one bundle of wood inside.

Haha, great look on her face!

things i never ever, ever want to do. move wood. and move it again, and again.
i turn my small garage into a wast oil burn building and trench hot water to my house and barn before i would make use of wood lol
-
Moving it onto a pallet is pretty nice. Forklift doesn’t fit inside though.
-
Fire safety upgrade. $10ea on FBM. All appear complete. Little one is a factory sealed foam fill fully charged.
One water can is fully charged. Those are going in the house right away. I’ll play with the rest and probably get real foam for them to make legit AB extinguishers of them and keep for hauler/pits/fuel stations.

that part is still on the same mail route, bouncing back and forth.
Melt water here is no joke. Pond was up 2.5" yesterday and another 2.5" today, with about 2" of snow pack melting. Probably gain another 2" today with near an inch of rain forecast. Will be very near outflow level. Impressively quick. Water is just flowing in from the edge of the field and from my entire yard.

Sell water to California!
But seriously, have you think about to bring in a civil engineer to assess your property to get a better understanding on why and what can be done about your water drainage issues?
I remember seeing how all of your neighbors along the street you’re on, drains right into your yard as shown in your pictures. If I remember correctly that water drainage running into neighbors properties is illegal, if that’s case which hopefully will mean someone else will need to pay the cost it’ll take to redirect their water drainage from yours (drain into the ditch or something)
-
Being at the bottom of a hill means receiving runoff. Soil here is clay, so there’s lots of runoff. It is what it is.
Mostly set to run across back of property, through the pond, and out to the ditch. There’s some grading to fix to get rid of low spots and impoundments. Probably next summer work, when it’s all dry and solid again.
-
Was up 3/4†in 2 hours after those photos. Haven’t looked since noon.
It runs off from here just as well as it runs to here.
-
Up 10†during the .6†of rain.
Cleaned the outflow. It’s overwhelmed. Juuuuust overtopping the bank in a couple places. Rain has stopped, it’ll be what it is for now! I marked the overtops. May throw some shovels of clay on those spots to hold since I’m sure it’ll stay at capacity through winter. I think I need a real culvert for outflow so it ramps quickly when nearing capacity. It’s in better shape than it was when I bought but idk how common a melt plus rain pattern this is.
Bottom of the yard has 6†of water everywhere. Need a better path through the pines for that to improve but that’s not a real big deal. It’s a long ways from the house.

hows the shop and house? who cares about the lawn or pond lol
6" snow or so at moms this morning. not nearly what the fake people forecasted. meh
-
All important things are dry and water is staying where water belongs
It cooled down later than hoped here too. Inch of rain in total and hardly a dust of snow this morning. Snowing when it got dark.
-
just brushed over a foot of snow of my truck before leaving mom- it was definitely winter over in buffalo. cleared up about batavia and i have green grass with just a little dust here and there at home.

I opened a case with Usps very late on Monday. Yesterday this magically arrived at Rochester, it came to bloomfield this morning and is out for delivery. It hadn’t arrived anywhere since the 20th.
I played with it more yesterday, and the oil control wasn’t able to be overriden per instructions, so I have a replacement oil control coming.
-
Had a usps package stalled in WI since 12/12... did lost package form on monday.. miraculously was found Monday night and delivered tues.
-
Now oil control installed. Working as it should. Got one with an info screen so it tells me what it’s doing. Live readout of calls and resistances. Much nicer to troubleshoot than a black box.
Functional again, but I think I may need to clean the orface/burner. Taking much higher oil pressure than it should. 7-8psi instead of 2-3. To get not so much flame with air backed off pretty far.
Could also be too-thick of oil.

better loaf pans too..

Had to fill oil furnace today. Lots of dead space in its tank, probably 50 gallons or so.
Third barrel I went to pump in was thicker. Started overdrawing my 15a voltage converter. Was using my 12v pump on 20v dewar batteries.
I need to get proper fittings and hoses for the 120v pumps I have so priming them can not suck. Fought with the pump on my red fuel station more since I was having some pump time. More frustration and poor results. Long story.
-
man i would have loved to think to grab one of the air powered trash pumps we used at work to suck gas / oil / goo out of anything. those things would pass a 1/2" pipe plug with out care. self priming diaphragm pumps of some kind.
-
That would suck it all. I think smaller versions of those are amazonable for 400-500?
Hoping a couple more fittings and I can make the centrifugal pumps I have work.
-
I think I still have a 4†trash pump from the small engine shop that we closed like 10 years ago
-
Put a spigot on the 55 gallon barrel & put it on its side & lift it up with fork lift and drain into the tank, open the small bung for venting is what we did at my old work.
Alternative is to use the good ol’ hand crank pump, remove the handle & adapt the drill to it.

5.5hp Tecumseh engine has a bunch of loose head bolts and one missing. Appears they secure accessories (fuel tank) with head bolts (!)
Turns over smooth, has oil-like oil and fresh gas. Haven’t pulled spark plug yet.
Claims electric start but I see no battery or 110v plug so that may have been deleted.
Might be a motor swap candidate if this is junk. Rest of it seems in working order, though surface rises from outside storage.
-
Marketplace says only worth $200 at most in claimed working order.
But what a cesspool of “ships via usps for $8†that has turned into. I’m quite certain that’s not true of any snowblower.
-
6.5hp 212cc predator $140 plus tax new.
So for 160 I could make a $160 snowblower lol
Guess if it does need an engine, it’s scrap and can be someone else’s curb find.
Will tighten head bolts and evaluate from there.
-
I picked up a similar looking unit (yard machine). Engine ran good, but transmission is bad.

Ran around on 4-5†of ice on Sunday and made some holes. Pond is a steady 6’ deep, takes 15’ or so from shore to reach depth.

Sure would be nice if the floors slopped to the drains at least a little.
Better than the house garage though, that has a 1/2†deep puddle between the two cars.

-
Sure would be nice if the floors slopped to the drains at least a little.
Its so disappointing when shit is done wrong...
-
slab heat is only on the other side, that's office side.
slab heat is set as low as it will go, and has done great to keep the building at 43ish if the waste oil goes out.
-
over all how is your waste oil burner doing? hows the weekly maintenance going?
i welded up a bigger burn pot for mine a few days a go and it rips pretty good now. just left a 65 degree shop, 59 at the far corner. made some adjustments but burning that solvent stuff at 50/50 oil and seems to burn cleaner/hotter.
-
when it ran out, it took a long time to work all the air out and have it auto-fire like it should. About a week of coming home and having to prime it. which took 4 seconds, but kept it from firing.
have not been vacuuming it out, amount of crap in the burn chamber has been very steady and reasonable.
I'm super happy with it overall. Love that it's on a thermostat and has been 92% set-n-forget and just works.

Waste oil furnace sucks to bleed air from.
Also found a bunch of water in an oil barrel today
Been having some issues and vacuum was high between filter and pump. Cleaned 100 micron filter screen. Vacuum is still his (20-22†instead of typical 5-7â€)
There’s something I need to look at in the tank to remove the draw tube. Won’t unscrew: it hits the side. No idea why there’s something perpendicular to the draw straw, and it wasn’t obvious when the level was low.
Great when working. Frustrating when it’s not.
-
Furnace running just fine after cleaning an additional 100 micron stainless screen on the in-tank pickup. -3 outside, shop is at 52. Haven’t been out there to check on it since before dinner so I’m confident it has been through several cycles.
Slab heat holds it at 42-43 turned all the way down.
Good setup to have the backup. I’ve got no complaints.
Burning about 50# of wood pellets per week heating 4-5 days in the shop office. Takes an hour to go from 50 to 65. Slowly closes in on 80 when it’s warmer out, holds a steady 72 on the thermostat setting when it’s cold or windy enough.

I think I’m gonna wish for chains on the plow truck.
Fair bit of ice under the snow that didn’t fully melt. I think I screwed myself not cleaning up a few days after the last snow.
If the two pallets in the shop weren’t pretty buried I might put a ton of pellets in the bed
-
counterweight does help
-
hmm. i plow up hill and dont seem to have an issue with the ZJ in its under geared open diffed short course tire, slipping slush box mode. i have found plowing in low range helps keep RPMs up for battery charging and extended use, but not really needed for power.
just put my unit in the barn tonight with its monthly battery over night battery charge prep.
winning for not having to brush snow off tomorrow on it.
-
Mine is on charge in the shop too.
Didn’t quite start yesterday when I went to put it in the shop.
-
Haven’t brushed snow off of it yet.
-
going through a lot of waste oil, I think it'll turn out that what I got with the place is 1 winters' worth. I haven't closely logged it, but the absolute count of empty barrels and totes come May will tell the story.
Pumping in the last three bbl today before I need to fork the tote over. I don't have anywhere near enough hose to reach those last three so that'll be annoying.
-
i have burned over 200 gallons so far. i have about 150 left
-
finally got a 120v pump up and running for oil transfer. moved 20-30 gallons of the thickest stuff I have just now and that's not bad.
I'm tired of fighting with and failing on my red fuel station. I'm glad this went better than that has.
-
im still just using the drum taps i made for KOH fuel, just put a drum sideways on my chassis table and dispense as needed.

I need to turn my sketches into drawings for some peer review but I think I settled on what to do for tire storage, and decided on a final axle rack design. Hoping it works out such that I have a good position on the rack to work on an axle out of a car too.
34†or so seem like a good support width?
Does putting 9-10 axles on one side of a pair of vertical 4†channels seem sketchy, weight wise? Ladder type setup. Sitting on concrete at the bottom and top tied to a building beam with some wall support tie in as well.
-
what could possibly go wrong
-
idk, if it's full of D60 steer axles fully dressed it could get a lil heavy. but steel is pretty ok in compression. A support in the middle and an X brace should keep it in compression instead of some other shape. I hope.
-
take pictures and list them for sale. sell 3 of them and scrap the rest. you will feel better about it. haha
-
I'd be interested in a SD60 99-04 if you've got one...
-
no super duty stuff. older BJ ford/dodge things, late model e250 semifloat rear, and that mostly covers it.
-
99-04 Ford & 94-99 Dodge D60s use same inner Cs.
I’ve been meaning to ask if I can have the bare Ford D60 I gave you years ago back... if you have no plans fir it

Saw Justin Barth post some model boat action on fb last week. Need something kinda big and slow for a pond this size. 80x105 or so gets eaten up fast with boats that’ll do 70.

i had all kinds. nitro stupid fast ones, weed wacker stupid big ones, but mostly the electric 15-20mph ones were most fun. had some air boats, in boards, outboards, and submarines too.

they are fast and relentless. took about 5 tries to stop them from mudding one right above my front screen porch door.
i had hundreds of birds in my lower barn. that to a few weeks- im down to about 2-3 ha
the still fly into the upper barn when i have the doors open but quickly realize something is different and bail!

Any bets on where a floor radiant heat loop is going to be? I don’t have thermal camera access that i know if, but do have a couple cheap IR temp gun things.
Want to put a couple lags in the floor to keep this axle rack where I put it.
I’d expect the edge of the slab to be clear, but how far in? Idk. Ladder is positioned about where I want it. I’m thinking halfway between there and the wall might be my target.

I'd put money on 6-12" from the edge...
-
buy a $200 FLIR iphone adapter... might be the best $200 you spend preventing you from having a mess.

I’ve heard of wetting down the floor with it in and you can see where it dries first
-
Standalone low-end thermal camera should be here tomorrow. Rack is stood up and ready to secure. Looking pretty good. Hopefully pinions don’t get in my way too much. That light fixture is going to come down. A bit of light relocation to be done.
Ready to put a tire rack on the ceiling on that wall too. Half cut, and the long part is flown and hanging. Supports to the beams vary and length and will be cut to fit. Will be some extension ladder welding tomorrow.

Power was out for almost 2hr last night. Lit a fire and checked water meter. Water powered sump pump used 30 gallons and let me just go to bed.
Win
-
what took power out in your area?
regards the willow tree, do you have a branch or two I can have? I read that stab a twig or branch into ground will grow roots and make for another tree. They love water and will suck ground dry, which I need, by my mailbox.
-
Plenty of live cuts available any time. And yes they will root with no effort. Some drops will start growing roots in a puddle.
No clue on what had power out. Looked like it was just me.
-
burned a bunch of propane with the floor heat turned up yesterday and have a general idea of the layout in the slab. It's not super easy to see them, there's only a 5-10F at most difference.
There were no warm spots near the axle rack at all, so looks like I lucked out. I'm surprised at how far apart they seem to be. I wonder if some of the lines could be plugged? Was hard to see the return manifold temps with the hot of the feed manifold tight behind it right there.
camera is slow to update and low res but seems to do its job. For the price, would be nice if it were nicer but that seems to be what is. I saved a bunch of shots, will upload sometime.
-
Tubing could be spaced as much as 12-18" apart depending on diameter. Each loop layout also could be more of a spiral than ladder(?).
-
Loops with that spacing and then blanks 4-6' or even 10'.
only better test might be to close one loop at a time so full boiler output goes to each one in turn?

shop is holding 74 right now with light off. was the same yesterday. shop office down a couple degrees since I opened the doors to the shop. I've left the ceiling fans on, so it should be pretty mixed.
90 at ground level outside and 85 up the pole at the weather station.

One pro to having a small shop

Second small window unit went in Sarah’s office, house is 72 now.
Shop is 74.
Hit 92 outside, still 89.
Sprayed weeds today, did about 4 gallons. A gallon of leftover roundup brand and three callings mixed from a cattail marketed glyphosate. Did a test section of the bulrush in the pond along with weeds and margins and crap in the lot gravel. Hope it works well. So much clover spreading over the untraveled gravel!
-
shop stayed at 77 after pulling buggy out and putting 2 cars in. not awful.
love to have 2 projects inside plus three cars in the air in state of being worked on. swapped mattresses today, hope my back feels better and motivation to spend a couple hours on things comes back even with going to work daily again now.
-
i worked all day today in my barn, it was about 93 at its peak, came in for some food and AC.
really not bad with the exhaust fan pumping, and i move my floor 48" fan and point it where i am haha
geared two axles with locker installs in less then 6hours today, not bad.
pulled all of the baddness of a DIY 4.56 gear install out of both diffs. so many wrong parts in so many creative places when you dont know what a carrier break is, or left hand thread ring gear bolts on 8.25" lol who ever failed at this had some really fun frustration.

Damn duckweed has taken over the pond in the last month as the bulrush fell back.
-
a lot places around here put bubblers underground to help combat that. Also brings oxygen into the pond.
-
or get some ducks
-
bubbler is the only reason there's that hole in the middle. it runs 24hr but pauses when there's motion in the garage so I don't have to listen to the compressor.
-
Duckweed improved with 400% water exchange

Well, now you know what you have to do next time
-
That was a serous amount of rain yesterday. I had a small stream running through my basement, seeping through the walls, up in the cracks in the floor. I'm sure that's not great ::). Usually I get a small wet spot in the corner in a heavy rain.
-
i get a little water in the basement too when it rains for 2 days straight haha
2 days with dehumid running it will be gone and dry
-
Proper cars can pass each other in the shop.
I don’t think the Allroad fits under the Jetta, I think I tried that before.

Was going to try to check alignment after swapping axle shaft and it appears the CD drive in the alignment computer may have failed. Hope I can find some old enough parts to verify and repair.
I looked through it and was getting to the point of connecting sensors when the video glitched and wouldn’t remedy. I rebooted and it couldn’t detect the boot CD anymore. Won’t eject either. Maybe I’m lucky and it’s a simple power issue.
Otherwise iirc it’s all IDE interface and the full size card it uses to interface with the alignment hardware is ISA or some other pre-pci thing. It’s a Pentium 3/4 era machine.
Mounted 4 new to me snows for the Jetta. They’re very mild but have lots of siping. Undecided if I’ll run them now or go through the 17” super aggressive snows that I only have a pair of.
-
First string of Xmas lights unspooled. Waiting to share until it’s done later this week but I’m extremely pleased. I just hope I can do ok to get to the top of the tree.
-
40ish gallons of oil picked up from north side of Syracuse. Locals in Rochester seem not to respond. That’s a lot of hugs to crush. I like barrels.
Was over there grabbing some sweet studded snows for the equinox. I spoiled Sarah with those on the Malibu2yr ago, and I guess that’ll be a thing now haha. 175 for 4 on proper pattern steel wheels right pattern. 60% or so and 9yr old. Seemed a steal even with some wheel rust. No checking and wheel burn through them in 1-2 seasons at most.
-
Finally. I misjudged a bit on spacing and shorted myself half a string. Gave the street the better view. By coincidence more than talent. Approx tree height 33’
A little disappointed in the 30’ extension pole I got to do this with — but really, it was disappointing in exactly the way expected. Probably has 2 duty cycles left in it. Not strong enough to lift a whole string of HD oversize lights.
Can’t attach via tapatalk. Getting 502 error. Hrmph

So close!
-
Usually can't see the tip of the tree from inside so it worked out for the best! And it looks a bit more balanced to the eye than it does in a longish exposure. I was a smidge disapointed at first but I think I'm happy with it. Not an easy job with a long pole!
-
Another thing that I needed to get up in the air to do is now way more than half done. I can have a bright shop with zero noisy ballasts now. On the new (brighter) side, I can’t tell the difference turning on the remaining fluorescents.
I have 16 more 8’ fixtures to rewire. Going to spend my last bulbs on the 4 fixtures on the dark side.
Now 50 t12 8’ bulbs to find disposal for, and a dozen 4’ T8….
Have not thought about swapping paint booth lights. That’s another 40 4’
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220103/3ac35ca8f637112e3fd1e829592a4cbf.jpg)
Maybe someday I’ll clean up enough not to be embarrassed at shop pictures too. After approaching 2 years here I finally start to have an idea of where things might belong. I “just” need to shuffle to get them there. And get a better larger place for scrap. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220103/431e186675a3ab9571481bd656d965c9.jpg)
Ladder was completely stable and serviceable. Would not suggest for any long lateral reaches.

Plan to make a level float for my waste oil tank. It’s almost already to set the low level set point already. I put 110 gal in about 3 weeks ago? Cold weather is sucking it down pretty good but it’s been excellent on startup reliability since I set the pump air bleed to weep just a tiny bit.
-
Low tech level float working.
Also need to remember to let the tank settle after filling, especially when very low. I plugged my pickup screen filling while running last night. Will run for about 15 min now then shut down with feed vacuum at 30” instead of typical 5”
-
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220130/177c49578a4400755adac0b639f78ab3.jpg)
I went nice and long with the radiator hose on camlock fitting, could shorten it a bunch if I want. Worked great. Need to remember to loosen the lid too, sucked the tank shut a bit.
A neighbor on the other side of the villainess had a tank top sitting at the curb. I’ve got a new steel scrap bin now. Leave the garbage cans for aluminum only. Big improvement!
-
those chains dont hurt your concrete?
-
Not to speak of. The lumpiness of the ride is almost enough to be worth removing and installing them, but not quite for most use. if I have to go outside at all with ice and snow they are absolutely necessary.
-
Cleaned the filers real well and vacuum is up to 17” already. Must be some dirty oil. Wonder what I could do to make that in tank 10 micron easier to clean
-
i love that my unit burns anything that fits through a 3/8" hole lol
held 58 in the shop today started at 20 this morning- was brisk. first time the dish soap was rock solid at the sink this year so far.
-
Second high vacuum was from the fine filter. Pickup screen was still clean. Has been running fine since. Drained some water from the bottom of the tank, which should help too. Move any water or sludge further below the pickup.
-
New portable box. Will need a crane to load in Joe. I’ve got some ideas for something to be portable to both that use and drums on the Ram. I hope.
Plan to keep a complete set of wrenches and sockets and common use tools and electronics things to move to bay in use same as I’ve been doing with the undersized tool cart. Should be a light load for this size unit.
Casters can be moved around to more standard 4 corner layout. I’m going to leave it like this for now.
22” depth. Vice is a Wilton, center pivot bolt fully backed out so need to pull the base. $400, didn’t haggle. Needs a bit of cleanup and handle tightening. Bottom large side is a cabinet not a drawer. Widths don’t match my Kennedy top box but that’s fine.
May use side box for putting storing in-flight fasteners and parts during a project.
Should allow me to clear out all tiny shitty boxes and de densify some things. Pretty excited
I’m sure it’ll fix -all- my organizational issues.

Problem solved. Likely for sale open market in the spring. Available for use or sale at my cost ‘till then.
Diagnosed the no start on this unit as a fuel issue. Finally primed and ran after a minute or more on starting fluid. Diaphragm in fuel pump is shot, it was just pouring out.
Ordered replacements for all the kohlers around the shop since they’re probably all the same 30-50 years old.
Will probably change the oil for the first time in 2 owners and send it. Didn’t need it at all last year. Speak now if anyone has need…
-
Did a drive by on my old place today. New siding and windows just like it needed. Looking good.

it is nice to see an old jouse being taken care of.. the couple that bought last house have let it go to shit.. Sara cried when we had to stop by last fall.
-
drove by my old apartment / shop last week
there must be 20 cars outside the shop lot and packed behind the building lol
apartment looks like a trailer park with kid shit, sheds, and junk all of the back lawn now- crazy!

the house across the street from me on Norman sold [again, for the 3rd time since built 10 years ago] a year ago. remember, the nice house?
they were asking 385 and got 452k. good god.
Zillow thinks my old norman house is now at 155k (sold it for 117) and my new house is 370 (bough for 260)
-
don't tell the assessor that 🤣
-
452 on a dead end street good god in deed!
-
my house was listed at 179, i had to pay 191 to get it in 2019. zillow says 258 now.
it was taxed at 121 for like 3 decades before me. they raised it ti 186 after i bought it
-
There was an article a week or two ago about towns doing assessments and they raised a house in Penfield by $131k just after the ppl bought it, the town assessor started receiving threatening messages after that
-
i dont think there is much recourse if the new assessment is inline with the recent sale price- thats kinda a true assesment-what someone would actually pay....
-
Exactly. That’s *supposed* to be the point of an assessment.
Theoretically all assessments should be skyrocketing over the last 2yr.
If only tax rates were reasonable around here….
-

That's more of the point, if your already paying $10-$15k in property taxes and the town increases by $1200 in one year it's pretty absurd. Of course ppl are happy to have their home values increase but the taxes is what's infuriating folks
-
is it though?
i mean that 12-15K is now worth like 8-10K so is only a 1200 increase a gift though lol
-
Yeah if it goes up 10% that’s like free

100% grass-fed shit factories….

whats the status of the old alignment setup? the L110 needs some help from new torsion keys

haven't chased a replacement computer since the old one stopped booting. I need to look at a couple things too, I will try to get on that.

I just picked up a bunch of old PCs from the local schools for scrap. What specs do you need
-
hopefully older than what you just picked up, I think it's an ISA slot that I need
-
there are a couple complete machines (computer and heads, no lift or rotary tables) on ebay in the midwest for very reasonable money.
-

none that old.
The oldest PC I think we got was a single core 2 duo. The rest are first gen i3s, i5s.

yeah, this thing is like a Pentium, give or take a generation. Might even be a 486.

this one all you mike lol

figured it would be better than hacking together an old PC to get his current system working.

yeah I haven't found any old enough PCs to try and stuff that card into. haven't been looking hard but would definitely be nice. he replied on marketplace, hopefully go look/grab late this evening.

Cleaned out the oil burner. I should have done this sooner. Scary amount of ash, I used my ash vac whole holds probably 3 gallons below the filters, and I filled it four times.
Lit right up and burning happily. The manual says yearly nozzle and igniter replacement, so I should probably get those on hand. I’ll find out next year how long it’d been since ash clean out. I’m betting my 2 years on it was less than half of what was in it.
The color difference in the back of the chamber is where the ash line was. The tubes were half full
Corrosion levels appear neat zero.

Put a wifi thermostat on the shop furnace so I can turn it up before I come outside to stumble around, lose things, and not work.
can't get the blower to work. new 'stat needs a C wire and would not work off the oil controller. semi expected.
Previously, I had triggered a 24vac relay to energize a 120v outlet using the existing low voltage from the oil controller and that worked great.
Using the same G wire (typically fan control) and the new stat, with separate thermostat power (using Rh and C) it doesn't energize the fan.
if I bridge R to G the fan comes on. it won't go with the thermostat though. the pins on the back don't do exactly as I expect but god forbid an actual wiring diagram is published for someone trying to make things control things they shouldn't lol
might have to keep an old stat around to run that fan, or tie it into the furnace blower. otherwise it'll only heat the old side of the shop and not the new side...

anyone have some 1/2 or better plywood drops min size about 32x36?
have a corner screaming for some shelving, haven't stumbled on the right material in any of my stash.

If it's a nest they have an adapter to bypass the c wire

The automagic car wash didn’t hit 571 in the last 14 months. It did need a little voltage but it hasn’t been charged since October 2021 parking.
Ram on the other hand with its brand new wires and terminals and batteries was flat. fucking. dead.
Pushed into the big bay with the forklift and put on 15 amps for the night. There’s a chance a certain freeze baby left a seat heater on at last use a few weeks ago, was still plugged in to the always-live cig lighter. HOPE that was it.

Shop backup heat inop
I think I have no propane coming to the boiler. Haven’t tried hotwiring the gas control valve

Are you out of waste oil? Im down to my last 55g drum that had 10gal of coolant in the bottom bah! I have 2 drums of solvent I guess I should have been mixing 50/50. Def need to stock up more this summer I slacked!
-
I’ve got a partial tote way in back. Probably one tank in the furnace, might get through the rest of the winter as warm as it’s been.
I accidentally left a door up overnight when it was cold out, that cost me a bunch of oil, probably a weeks worth in a day.
-
Oh no!
-
Yeah it’s unfortunate but the garage door opener remotes can reach from the house to the shop.
I had door sensors but their batteries died. Need to fix them.
-
Power has been out for about an hour or a bit more (just me, no neighbors. verified nothing between ground and either feed coming from meter to main. Boo)
I feel like every time that water powered sump pump runs I owe Spencer a beer. Panicking about that when it was wet out sucked.
-
Long enough without power and with snow outside, the water starts coming back.
Tiny mess now, almost nothing in finished space. Had to mop the bathroom floor downstairs is about all.
Whoever poured the basement did as good a job pitching it as the garage. Fuckin amateurs. Need to push like an inch of water from the far side of the basement back to the sump crock. Cleanest the crawl space part of the basement will ever be!
-
Our power flashed once last night.
-
Power still out?
-
power came back about 0745, about 10.5 hours down. longest ever here. Nobody in sight at restoration, so I wonder if Mike next door has a backup generator that kept his outside light on?
-
Had some magic smoke come from my static phase converter while turning some pipe on the lathe, truing it up and turning inside weld seam out of it so the OD of a bearing would clear to make a puller. I think I had to replace a couple caps in there already, I wonder if data plates are all true because it’s not overloaded based on what sizes I think everything is…
Belt is slipping too, and tension seems pretty ok. Should have something on deck if I tighten it much more, I think it’ll shred. 4” leather belt.
-
Put a fifth feed auger motor in the living room pellet stove this year. Have had two that I needed to weld gears together on. Three that broke gear teeth. (There is double counting, weld then break teeth a month later once)
Haven’t found another source for a 2-2.5rpm 120vac motor with the right pattern on the gear case. Pellethead seems to be the only source. It’s what the oem sells too.
Much lower quality parts than the initial motor I pulled out that stripped gears too, but probably after 5-15 years of service. Three years of service for me.
Very frustrating!
-
I found a better quality auger not long after that post. Been running quietly and correctly for the rest of the year.
Finally sent a project. About even money so with inflation and storage I lost a boatload but bad idea finally departed.

Decided to replace my probably almost 40 year old chest freezer last weekend. Picked up a whirlpool stand up freezer Saturday. Got thing rearranged and unpacked it Sunday evening.
Compressor never stopped running, inside never cooled, coils didn’t get warm. Low/no refrigerant most likely. Returned just now. The other one that was in stock sold since Saturday. Decided to order to store for pickup next week instead of chasing to other stores and burning more time and fuel today or paying for delivery. Lame.
-
DOA, really sucks at least you had the old one to fall back to and it was not in a emergency replacement scenario

jeez

Closing 6/1 for 360k
Had 17 offers
His assessment had gone from 160 to 260 in this reassessment round while mine went from 270 to 400
Those prices with current interest rates combined especially with ny taxes make my eyes water. Thats gotta be a 3500 payment.
